Unity and the Waymarks

The servant of the Lord has told us that we must have unity or in the storm that is coming, we will be destroyed. In two previous articles, we have studied two of the prerequisites for unity—repentance and confession. “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

One of the reasons Historic Adventists all over the world are in trouble now is that there has been sin in spiritual Israel. But as soon as someone stands up and says: “To have a clear conscience, I have to speak out on this,” that person gets into trouble.

If we are going to be in harmony as a people, we are going to have to quit covering things up and repent of all sin. If there is lying or stealing or other forms of dishonesty, this must be repented of, confessed and forsaken. Departure from Bible truth must also be repented of, confessed and forsaken. When the early Adventists first learned the truth of the Sabbath, though they had been breaking it ignorantly, they were very sad. They not only repented and confessed it, but they started to live differently. Whenever anyone becomes involved in error, when it is pointed out, he must go to the Lord, repent, confess and forsake it. If others have been hurt by their teaching, they need to go to them and confess and tell them that they have forsaken their erroneous belief. If the offending person does not confess it, he must be separated from God’s professed people.

In this article we are going to consider the remaining two points that must be met in order for there to be unity between Historic Adventists today and the Seventh-day Adventist world church structure.

The third requirement is that there must be a reformation in the life of the person. See Desire of Ages, 555. After confession, as far as is in their power, they must make restitution. Ezekiel 33:15 says, “If the wicked…gives back what he has stolen…he shall surely live.” Full restitution is then the third step.

The fourth thing that must be done to prepare the way for unity is that there must be an agreement to stand together on the pillars of the truth that the Lord has given us. Unless all four of these things take place, there can never again be unity and harmony.

“If your faith in the Word of God is strengthened; if you will fully accept the truths that have called us out of the world and made us a people denominated by the Lord as His peculiar treasure; if you will unite with your brethren in standing by the old landmarks, then there will be unity.” Manuscript Releases, vol.11, 319 [Emphasis supplied] Notice that it is these truths that have brought about unity.

In Adventism in the last days, it is only those who stand by the landmarks, on the platform of truth, who can be truly united. The people who reject the Spirit of Prophecy and preach new theology are all confused. Though they may have an outward union, they will never have true unity.

“God is leading out a people to stand in perfect unity upon the platform of eternal truth.” Manuscript Releases, vol. 9, 311

“We are one in faith in the fundamental truths of God’s Word. And one object must be kept in view constantly; that is, harmony and cooperation must be maintained without compromising one principle of truth. And while constantly digging for the truth as for hidden treasure, be careful how you open new and conflicting opinions. We have a worldview message. The commandments of God and the testimonies of Jesus Christ are the burden of our work.” Counsels to Writers and Editors, 79

Notice that in giving counsel in how we may have unity, she says, “Be careful how you introduce new and conflicting opinions.” We are to be united on the fundamental truths of God’s Word, and if we have new light, there are ways that the new light can be introduced to the church. In Historic Adventism, we must get back to gospel order or the devil is going to destroy us. There is a right way and a wrong way to introduce new light. We are never going to have unity if we all go off on our own ways.

Some people think that we just preach on anything that comes into our mind. That is absolutely not true. There are many things that we use great restraint in preaching or teaching because we want to move in harmony and unity with the body of God’s people. There are many scriptures that I have studied and I am very interested in understanding, but that I do not preach about. They are not the scriptures of primary importance for the world to understand right now. The messages that are critical for the world to understand at this point in time are the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation and especially the three angels’ messages.

When we find some precious new light in scripture, we should not be sending it all over the world before we have sought counsel. If you are going to an Historic Seventh-day Adventist Church, even if you are absolutely sure that what you have found is truth, until you have counseled with some other experienced brother, prayed about it and come to a unity of opinion, you should not present it publicly. Suppose that after you have presented it to the brethren, the brothers say, “Well, I just don’t know.” Then you might want to talk it over with some leaders or minister in historic Adventism.

There are many scriptures that are interesting to study which we do not have unity of opinion on right now. I can continue to enjoy studying them and, if the Lord wills, one of these days soon maybe we can have a Bible conference or two on some of these scriptures. We need to get together like they did in the Bible conferences in 1848 and kneel down, pray and study the Word and come to unity of understanding among the brethren before we introduce something, even though we may be very sure of opinion.

To have unity in Historic Adventism, we must be united on what the Bible calls “present truth.” See 2 Peter 1:12. One of the great reasons for the lack of unity in Adventism today is that some people who call themselves Seventh-day Adventists have gotten away from present truth.

“The oneness and unity of God’s truth-believing remnant people carries powerful conviction to the world that they have the truth, and are the peculiar, chosen people of God. This oneness and unity disconcerts the enemy, and he is determined that it shall not exist. The present truth, believed in the heart and exemplified in the life, makes God’s people one, and gives them a powerful influence.” Testimonies, vol. 1, 327

There are some timeless truths. Since the Fall, it has always been true that if you are going to be saved, you can only be saved through the blood of Christ’s sacrifice. But there are other truths that are present truth—truth for a certain time. There was a present truth in the time of Noah; there was a present truth in the time of Christ and the apostles; and there was present truth in Martin Luther’s time. There has been present truth in every generation of God’s people—and there is present truth today.

What is present truth today? How about the three angel’s messages? Were the three angel’s messages preached in the time of the apostle Paul? No, that prophecy was not even given yet. Were they preached in the time of Martin Luther? No, they were not. It was not present truth then. The three angel’s messages began to be preached in the 1840s. Since then, and all the way to the close of time, the three angel’s messages are present truth.

Now, to understand the three angel’s messages, there are some other truths that we could also call present truth. In the three angel’s messages in Revelation 12:14 it says, “Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God.” Can you be called a commandment keeper if you break one? No, you cannot because it says in James 2:10, if you keep the whole law but you break one, you are guilty of all. So, you cannot be called a commandment keeper unless you keep all of God’s commandments. Is the Sabbath part of present truth? Yes, it is.

Then you have in the fist angel’s message that the hour of God’s judgment is come. What information do you have to know to be able to say to the whole world with a loud voice that the hour of God’s judgment has come. You have got know that the judgment has already started. How do you know for sure that it has started? There is only one way that you can determine that for certain, and that is from Hebrews 8 and 9 and Daniel 8 and 9.

Daniel 8 tells you that the judgment will begin in 1844. Here you have the subject of the sanctuary. You cannot understand that the hour of God’s judgment has come without an understanding of the sanctuary. If you forsake the doctrine of the sanctuary, you have forsaken present truth. When this happens, unity is impossible. The only people who are going to be united at the end of time are the Historic Adventists who hang on to present truth. Everybody else is going to be in all kinds of confusion. They can call themselves Seventh-day Adventists or anything they choose to, but if they do not hold to present truth, there can be no unity. When you start forsaking present truth, you lose the unity. That is why we have confusion now, and we will never, never have unity again until we come back and stand on present truth.

“Unity is the strength of the church. Satan knows this, and he employs his whole force to bring in dissension. He desires to see a lack of harmony among the members of the church of God. Greater attention should be given to the subject of unity. What is the recipe for the cure of the leprosy of strife and dissension? [She gives the simplest of answers.] Obedience to the commandments of God.” Selected Messages, book 2, 159

If we would all make the decision that when God commands something, that would be the end of all controversy, we would have unity.

Ellen White says that historically God sent a message to Christendom that would have brought unity, if they had accepted it.

“The first angel’s message of Revelation 14, announcing the hour of God’s judgment and calling upon men to fear and worship Him, was designed to separate the professed people of God from the corrupting influences of the world and to arouse them to see their true condition of worldliness and backsliding. In this message [preached in the United States by William Miller and his cohorts], God has sent to the church a warning, which, had it been accepted, would have corrected the evils that were shutting them away from Him. Had they received the message from heaven, humbling their hearts before the Lord and seeking in sincerity a preparation to stand in His presence, the Spirit and power of God would have been manifested among them. The church would again have reached that blessed state of unity, faith, and love which existed in apostolic days, when the believers ‘were of one heart and one of soul,’ and ‘spake the Word of God with boldness,’ when ‘the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.’ Acts 4:32,31; 2:47.” The Great Controversy, 379

Do you realize what this statement is saying? If the first angel’s message had been accepted, it would have brought the church back to the condition it was in the days of the apostles. Do you suppose that this message could still bring unity in the 1990s?

The people who are destroying the unity in the Seventh-day Adventist Church are not the Historic Adventists. It is the people who are trying to change our doctrines! It is the people who no longer believe in the two apartment sanctuary, who no longer believe in 1844, who no longer believe that you can overcome sin and who no longer know who Babylon is. If you do not understand these things, how can you even call yourself a Seventh-day Adventist?

Satan has a goal for Seventh-day Adventists, and I leave it with you to decide whether or not he has had any success.

“This is intended as a warning to the people of God living in the last days. If they follow after righteousness and true holiness, if they keep all the commandments of God, Satan and his agents will not be permitted to overcome them. All the opposition of their bitterest foes will prove powerless to destroy or uproot the vine of God’s own planting, Satan understands what Balaam learned by sad experience, that there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither divination against Israel, while iniquity is not cherished among them; therefore his power and influence will ever be employed to mar their unity and defile the purity of their characters. His snares are laid in a thousand ways to weaken their power for good.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 599

If we will cling to the truth and live the truth, if we will follow after righteousness and true holiness, there is no way that the devil can overcome us. The devil understands this much better than we do. There is no divination against Israel, there is no enchantment against Jacob, there is no way that he can overcome the people of God, and he knows this. That is why he is laying traps and snares to try to get us to trip up into sin so that our unity will be marred and our characters defiled so he can destroy us. This is one of the reasons why at Historic Adventist meetings there is so much emphasis on how to overcome sin. When God’s people understand how to overcome sin and they are standing on the truth and are united, the devil knows that there is no way that he can overcome us. He is trying to divide us up, split us up into all kinds of factions, get us arguing or quarreling over anything imaginable so that our unity can be broken up and our characters defiled so that he can destroy us.

There are many people today who are separationists. I want to share with you who the real separationists are. I want you to see how important this is.

Speaking of those who forsake the historic Adventist teaching on the sanctuary, Ellen White said, “But on no other platform than that which the Lord has laid can we unite with them. Never could we combine on any other basis. The foundation has been laid and all who will take their stand upon this platform, uniting wholeheartedly with the Lord’s people, will be made welcome with rejoicing. But we cannot unite with those who choose to take their stand upon another foundation.” Manuscript Releases vol. 760, 5

“There is to be a decided change in those who have kept up their warfare against the principles delivered to us by the Lord. Truth is truth, and righteousness is righteousness. To those who have separated in principle from true believers, choosing their own course, the word is spoken, ‘Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ There is to be unity, but it is to be on the right basis.” Ibid.

Now, who are the real separationists? She calls them the people who have separated in principle from the true believers—the people who have forsaken the true doctrines, the present truth, the fundamental doctrines, the platform which God has made for His people. In Early Writings, the three angels’ messages are called a firm platform and the angel pronounced a curse upon anyone who tried to move a pin or a block in those messages. The people who leave the truth—the three angels’ messages, the sanctuary and the commandments of God and the ability to overcome sin through the grace of Christ—are the separationists.

It is time to think straight, friends. You need to recognize that it is those people who have separated from the truth who are in the business of labeling those who have stayed with the truth, separationists, when just the opposite of what they say is true.

There are some times and situations in which God has forbidden us to attempt to unify with others. I would like to mention three situations.

  • We are not to unify with those who are departing from the faith.
  • We are not to unify on wrong practices.
  • We are not to attempt to unify on a platform of error.

Are we willing to have unity with the entire world church? Absolutely, but there are four requirements—repentance, confession, restitution and a willingness to stand together on the truth, the truth that God has given to Seventh-day Adventists.

Ellen White has told us that this unity cannot occur in a moment. It takes prayer, time, and discussion together. When unity comes, however, it will give more force to our evangelistic preaching than anything else we can do. When we come into perfect unity, we are going to see miracles, the sick healed among us and many wonderful things. Is it worth working toward?

Like a great sweeping tidal wave, there are people around the world who are recognizing that we must get together and work together as Historic Adventists to finish the work—we must have perfect unity. The will of God demands it. The sacrifice of Jesus demands it. For the work to be finished, it must happen. If it is your desire that there be perfect unity in God’s people, let the prayer of your heart be, “Lord, any change that there has to be in my mind, my body, my spirit or anything about my life, show me what it is and give me the grace to do it.”

Question & answer – Who are the two witnesses in Revelation 11:3, 4?

The two witnesses refer to the Old and New Testaments—the Bible.

“Concerning the two witnesses the prophet declares further: ‘These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.’ ‘Thy word,’ said the psalmist, ‘is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path’ (Revelation 11:4; Psalm 119:105). The two witnesses represent the Scriptures of the Old and the New Testament. Both are important testimonies to the origin and perpetuity of the law of God. Both are witnesses also to the plan of salvation. The types, sacrifices, and prophecies of the Old Testament point forward to a Saviour to come. The Gospels and Epistles of the New Testament tell of a Saviour Who has come in the exact manner foretold by type and prophecy.

“ ‘They shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and three-score days, clothed in sackcloth’ (Revelation 11:3). During the greater part of this period, God’s witnesses remained in a state of obscurity. The papal power sought to hide from the people the word of truth, and set before them false witnesses to contradict its testimony. When the Bible was proscribed by religious and secular authority; when its testimony was perverted, and every effort made that men and demons could invent to turn the minds of the people from it; when those who dared proclaim its sacred truths were hunted, betrayed, tortured, buried in dungeon cells, martyred for their faith, or compelled to flee to mountain fastnesses, and to dens and caves of the earth—then the faithful witnesses prophesied in sackcloth. Yet they continued their testimony throughout the entire period of 1260 years. In the darkest times there were faithful men who loved God’s word and were jealous for His honor. To these loyal servants were given wisdom, power, and authority to declare His truth during the whole of this time.” The Great Controversy, 267, 268.

“According to the words of the prophet, then, a little before the year 1798 some power of Satanic origin and character would rise to make war upon the Bible. And in the land where the testimony of God’s two witnesses should thus be silenced, there would be manifest the atheism of the Pharaoh, and the licentiousness of Sodom.” Ibid., 269.

Dare to be a Daniel

In 2 Peter 2:11, Peter gives us the warning: “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” Friend, I believe that as we are obedient to God, abstaining from the fleshly lusts and yielding to the Holy Spirit, we increase in knowledge and grow in grace. Peter elaborates this growth in grace and presents to us in 2 Peter 1:3-7: “According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperence; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.” You see the high calling we are to press on towards.

Ellen White refers to these character traits and these scriptures as the ladder of sanctification. “‘And to knowledge, temperance.’ This is the third step in the path toward perfection of character. On every side there is indulgence and dissipation, and the result is degeneration and corruption. The inhabitants of our earth are depreciating in mental, moral, and physical power, because of the intemperate habits of society. Appetite, passion, and love of display are carrying the multitudes into the greatest excesses and extravagance….The people of God must take an opposite course from the world. They must take up the warfare against these sinful practices, deny appetite, and keep the lower nature in subjection….It is for us to ‘search the Scriptures,’ and bring our habits into harmony with the instruction of the Bible….‘And to temperance, patience.’ The need of becoming temperate is made manifest as we try to take this step. It is next to an impossibility for an intemperate person to be patient.” My Life Today, 97. This ladder of sanctification is referring to the true Christian experience. As we crucify self, we no longer live after the passions and indulgences to which our carnal heart pulls us to. Instead, we practice self-denial and abstinence from fleshly lusts that war against the soul, because as it says in Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.” If we are to experience this in our humanity, we must also adhere and listen to the admonition of Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:16: Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

I love what Ellen White says in My Life Today on page 134. “The sacred temple of the body must be kept pure and uncontaminated, that God’s Holy Spirit may dwell therein.” A little further along, she says: “The Christian life is constantly an onward march. Jesus sits as a refiner and purifier of His people; and when His image is perfectly reflected in them they are perfect and holy, and prepared for translation. Every living Christian will advance daily in the divine life. As he advances toward perfection, he experiences a conversion to God every day; and this conversion is not completed until he attains to perfection of Christian character, a full preparation for the finishing touch of immortality.” Ibid. 249

Today God is waiting for His church to represent Him fully. “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:26,27. Not spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but living sacrifices, living stones, spiritual houses. “If we close our eyes to the light for fear we shall see our wrongs, which we are unwilling to forsake, our sins are not lessened, but increased. If light is turned from in one case, it will be disregarded in another. It is just as much sin to violate the laws of our being as to break one of the ten commandments, for we cannot do either without breaking God’s law.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 44,45.

One of the greatest illustrations of true sanctification is the story of Daniel. In Daniel, I see an example of one who was a spiritual house. As I studied and prayed to God for greater light, I saw that Daniel, when he refused the meat and drink of the king’s personal table, refused all of it. I believe that even included the dainties. Proverbs tells us to beware of the king’s dainties for they are deceitful meat (Proverbs 23:3). God led me to the Adventist message through the health message. As I went to the potlucks at a typical Seventh-day Adventist church, I said, “It looks like these people have substituted meat for junk.” Though it may not be at the risk of our lives, as it was with Daniel when he refused everything at the king’s table, when we choose our diet according to principle, we run the risk of being labeled: narrowed, bigoted, even borderline fanatic.

“What if Daniel and his companions had made a compromise with those heathen officers, and had yielded to the pressure of the occasion by eating and drinking as was customary with the Babylonians? That single instance of departure from principle would have weakened their sense of right and their abhorrence of wrong. Indulgence of appetite would have involve the sacrifice of physical vigor, clearness of intellect, and spiritual power. One wrong step would probably have led to others, until, their connection with heaven being severed, they would have been swept away by temptation.
“The life of Daniel is an inspired illustration of what constitutes a sanctified character. Bible sanctification has to do with the whole man….It is impossible for any to enjoy the blessings of sanctification while they are selfish and gluttonous.” Counsels on Health, 66

“Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things.” Luke 21:34-36.

You see, the devil throws all these things right in front of us as snares. He knows what food products will do today. Why do you think he has the Big Macs twenty-four inches high on your TV screen with the cheese running out and the big Coca-Cola and is now using advertisements for movies?
Jesus said, “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be….they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage.’ Matthew 24:37,38. As I studied the Spirit of Prophecy, I saw that we were give the greatest light in health and temperance. You see, it was not just cigarettes and alcohol that Ellen White wrote about. She states; “True temperance teaches us to abstain entirely from that which is injurious, and to use judiciously only healthful and nutritious articles of food.” The Health Reformer, April 1, 1877.

As I continued to study, I became a vegetarian. I realized that eating meat was not a test of fellowship, but I read where Ellen White tells us, “Greater reforms should be seen among the people who claim to be looking for the soon appearing of Christ. Health reform is to do among our people a work which it has not yet done. There are those who ought to be awake to the danger of meat eating, who are still eating the flesh of animals, thus endangering the physical, mental, and spiritual health. Many who are now only half converted on the question of meat eating will go from God’s people, to walk no more with them.” Review and Herald, May 27, 1902. I also read: “The diet reform should be progressive. As disease in animals increases, the use of milk and eggs will become more and more unsafe. An effort should be made to supply their place with other things that are healthful and inexpensive. The people everywhere should be taught how to cook without milk and eggs, so far as possible, and yet have their food wholesome and palatable.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 365.

As I began to study, I saw articles coming out estimating that there are ten million pure vegetarians within the United Stated today. I found articles like: “A High Fat Diet Related to Lung Cancer.” I saw a report of the Surgeon General’s findings in the Herald, July 28, 1988. The headlines read, “Fatty Foods are Killing Us.” The Stockton Record, reporting on the Surgeon General’s report, stated that the United States is eating its way to the grave by eating too many animal products, dairy products and high triglyceride, high cholesterol foods today. I found one article that told of steel fingered eviscerating machines in poultry slaughterhouses. These machines rip out the entrails of the chicken at a rate of ninety birds a minute. When they do this, the fecal waste material of the bird gets on this machine and spreads the bacteria contamination to every bird that comes down the pike. “If the American public knew what garbage they were eating, they would revolt,” said USDA inspector, Hobert Bartley, in an article in the San Francisco Examiner, Sunday, June 29, 1986.

The February, 1992 issue of Consumer Reports tells us that of 113 samples of fish taken across this country, 44 of them were contaminated with human fecal bacteria. How are the fish getting human fecal bacteria? Then the articles start coming out in the newspapers and the one that made me laugh was “Pollution cited for 1,429 beach closings in 1990.” Stockton Record, August 15, 1991. Do not swim in it, but throw the pole in there, catch whatever lives in it and eat it; that is okay. Does that make sense? “San Diego Sewage Spill Fouls the Ocean.” Stockton Record, February 6, 1992. Millions of gallons of partially treated sewage poured out! Then you have the third rate countries like Peru and others who do not have the water treatment plants as the United States and they are letting all this human fecal bacteria out into the water and it is migrating our way. That is why a newspaper reported that cholera cases surge Mexico. You get cholera from human fecal bacteria. The paper says officials try to suppress the report of the disease’s outbreak. Friend, have you walked down a beach lately and seen the birds and fish lying dead on the beaches. I believe it is from poisoning.

Jeremy Rifkin, on page 144 of his book Beyond Beef, Penguin Books USA, Inc. Cites that the FDA acknowledges that they do not know today whether or not BIV (Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus), once it hits human blood, becomes HIV positive, and the FDA is not telling anybody anything.
I was shocked at what I read in an article that recently came out in the Tennessee Tallahassee Democrat, May 28, 1993. The department of agriculture recently conducted surprise visits to ninety slaughterhouses in the United States. Thirty of the facilities were shut down immediately. The article says there are 1,200 in the country. Can you believe or can you imagine what is the condition of the others that have not yet been checked?

Ellen White said the day would come when we would have to discard milk and other things. It is surprising and amazing to me that as I continued to study, I found these headlines: “Study Links Cow’s Milk in Infancy to Diabetes.” Stockton Record, July 30, 1992 from Medical Tribune News Service. The article states: “Protein in cows milk ingested during infancy may be the trigger that sets off insulin dependent diabetes in susceptible children.” This was a study that was recently done and verified. What was amazing to me was that, at the same time, the United States responds with “Doctors Cry Over Milk Drinking.” Stockton Record, September 30, 1992. Here is a doctor saying that the common dinner time refrain, ‘Drink your milk’ may be replaced by ‘Eat your tofu’ if a group of doctors, nutritionists and the venerable Dr. Spock have their way. Once regarded as a perfect food, cow’s milk is coming under increasing fire as a part of the daily diet of babies….We need to leave cow’s milk where it belongs, in cows.” This is the world crying out now.

“It hasn’t been a good year for milk. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that parents not give their children whole milk during the first year of life because it causes hidden blood loss and possibly anemia….Milk is often contaminated with traces of antibiotics; is a common cause of allergy and digestive problems.” Stockton Record, September 30, 1992. A statistic that interested me was one that suggested that twenty percent of the dairy cows in this country have leukemia. When the truck goes to the dairy farm, all the dairies are pooled into one truck. It is all mixed together. Is it any wonder that Agatha Thrash recently said in a public interview that seven out of nine cartons of milk that come off the grocery store shelves are contaminated with active cancer viruses.

People come to me and say, “You know, Danny, Ellen White said the day would come when God would reveal this.” Friend, all you have to do is open your eyes. It is being revealed all around you through the world today. People come to me and say, “Well, the diet reform needs to be progressive, Brother.” And I say, “How long have you been an Adventist? How old are you? What do you need, another sixty-five years before you are going to throw this stuff away?” Maybe I look too narrow and bigoted when I sit and eat with people because I will no take part of some food that has dairy in it, but I am convicted myself. For myself, I cannot defile my body with cancer viruses. I believe that as we look at the test Daniel’s three friends faced in refusing to bow to the image, we are looking at our future. I do not believe that there is any question that had they failed the test of food, they would never have been prepared to stand the test that followed. “If ever there was a time when the diet should be of the most simple kind, it is now! [1905]” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 389 (Emphasis supplied). We are also told that all those who are preparing for translation to heaven will eat a most simple diet; fruits and grains prepared free from grease will be placed on the tables of all those who are preparing for translation. See ibid., 64.

“Seventh-day Adventists are handling momentous truths. More than forty years ago the Lord gave us special light on health reform, but how are we walking in that light? How many have refused to live in harmony with the counsels of God! As a people, we should make advancement proportionate to the light received.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 24. Ellen White continues that, “As a people, we should make advancement proportionate to the light received. It is our duty to understand and respect the principles of health reform. On the subject of temperance we should be in advance of all other people; and yet there are among us well-instructed members of the church, and even ministers of the gospel, who have little respect for the light that God has given upon this subject. They eat as they please, and work as they please. Let those who are teachers and leaders in our cause take their stand firmly on Bible ground in regard to health reform and give a straight testimony to those who believe we are living in the last days of this earth’s history. A line of distinction must be drawn between those who serve God, and those who serve themselves.” Ibid.

Peter admonished us to abstain from fleshly lusts that war against the soul. How is it with you, my friend? Are you willing to take your stand on the side of truth, living up to all the light God has given us for this time in which we live?

The End

Who is an Historic Seventh-day Adventist?

Today, our people are being taunted with: “You people call yourselves ‘Historic Seventh-day Adventists,’ but you don’t even know what being an historic Seventh-day Adventist really is.” Sooner or later someone is going to ask you this question and you have to have something to say, so let us look at, “What is an Historic Seventh-day Adventist?”.
If you are not familiar with the little book Issues: The Letter the NAD Officers Did not Publish, The Church, it is part two of the Issues books printed by Steps to Life. The first half is a letter to the NAD, and the last is material written by John Grosboll. There is a section in the back called “Fundamental Principles.” The material contained there first appeared in an article by James White in the Signs of the Times in 1874. In this article, he outlined the beliefs of Historic Seventh-day Adventists. It should also be said that an Historic Seventh-day Adventist believes Ellen G. White to have been a prophet of God and that her writings have divine authority. Therefore, an Historic Seventh-day Adventist will give precedence to God’s last day prophet, to his last day church, over his own opinion. An Historic Seventh-day Adventist will never say, “Well, she did not know what she was talking about,” or “You know, she didn’t understand everything.” You see, God does not have junior prophets—a prophet of God is a prophet of God. There are no percentage scales; either you are a prophet of God or you are not. Either Ellen White was a prophet of God on the same par as the Biblical prophets or she was not a prophet at all.

Fundamental Principles:
By James White
[Comments by John Osborne in brackets and italicized]

In presenting to the public this synopsis of our faith, we wish to have it distinctly understood that we have no articles of faith, creed, or discipline aside from the Bible.
[John Osborne—So, an Historic Seventh-day Adventist absolutely has no creed outside of Inspiration—bottom line. Now, if you take any other book of spiritual significance, aside from Inspiration, then you are not a Historic Seventh-day Adventist. If you take any other book and place it on a par, or pattern your life or the church, or anything else after it, then you are not an Historic Seventh-day Adventist.]

We do not put forth this as having authority with our people, nor is it designed to secure uniformity among them, as a system of faith, but is a brief statement of what is, and has been, with great unanimity, held by them. We often find it necessary to meet inquiries on this subject, and sometimes to correct false statements circulated against us, and to remove erroneous impressions which have obtained with those who have not had an opportunity to become acquainted with our faith and practice. Our only object is to meet this necessity. With these remarks, we ask the attention of the reader to the following propositions which aim to be a concise statement of the more prominent features of our faith. That there is one God, a personal, spiritual Being, the Creator of all things, omnipotent, omniscient, and eternal, infinite in wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy; unchangeable, and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit. Psalms 139:7.

That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, and Son of the Eternal Father, the One by whom God created all things, and by whom they do consist; that He took on Him the nature of the seed of Abraham for the redemption of our fallen race; that He dwelt among men, full of grace and truth, lived our example, died our sacrifice, was raised for our justification, ascended on high to be our only Mediator in the sanctuary in heaven, where, with His own blood, he makes atonement for our sins; which atonement, so far from being made on the cross, which was but the offering of the sacrifice, is the very last portion of His work as priest, according to the example of the Levitical priesthood, which foreshadowed and prefigured the ministry of our Lord in heaven. See Leviticus 16; Hebrews 8:4,5; 9:6,7; etc.

[John Osborne—Now, what this is saying is that we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God. His life was our example; in his death he was our substitute—he died as our Sacrifice. He is now acting as our High Priest in heaven, pleading his blood for the forgiveness of our sin. Do you believe that? Amen.]

That the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, contain a full revelation of His will to man, and are the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

That baptism is an ordinance of the Christian church, to follow faith and repentance, an ordinance by which we commemorate the resurrection of Christ, as by this act we show our faith in His burial and resurrection, and, through that, of the resurrection of all the saints at the last day; and that no other mode fitly represents these facts than that which the Scriptures prescribe, namely, immersion. Romans 6:3-5; Colossians 2:12.
That the new birth comprises the entire change necessary to fit us for the kingdom of God, and consists of two parts: First, a moral change, wrought by conversion and a Christian life; second, a physical change at the second coming of Christ, whereby, if dead, we are raised incorruptible, and, if living, are changed to immortality in a moment in the twinkling of an eye. John 3:3,5; Luke 20:36.

We believe that prophecy is a part of God’s revelation to man; that it is included in that Scripture which is profitable for instruction (2 Timothy 3:16); that it is designed for us and our children (Deuteronomy 29;29); that so far from being enshrouded in impenetrable mystery, it is that which especially constitutes the Word of God a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105; 2 Peter 1:19); that a blessing is pronounced upon those who study it (Revelation 1:1-3); and that, consequently, it is to be understood by the people of God, sufficiently to show them their position in the world’s history, and the special duties required at their hands.

[John Osborne—As Historic Seventh-day Adventists, we not only believe in all of Scripture, but especially in the books of Daniel and Revelation. We do not believe the book of Revelation is a sealed book, but that it is very important, revealing to us where we are in earth’s history and outlining the place of God’s church in the last days.]

That the world’s history from specified dates in the past, the rise and fall of empires, and the chronological succession of events down to the setting up of God’s everlasting kingdom, are outlined in numerous great chains of prophecy; and that these prophecies are now all fulfilled except the closing scenes.

[John Osborne—So, if you are going to be an Historic Seventh-day Adventist, you not only have to believe in prophecy, you must also understand and believe the true applications of prophecy, including the day for a year principle. See Numbers 14:34, Ezekiel 4:6]

That the doctrine of the world’s conversion and temporal millennium is a fable of these last days, calculated to lull men into a state of carnal security, and cause them to be overtaken by the great day of the Lord as by a thief in the night; that the second coming of Christ is to precede, not follow the millennium; for until the Lord appears, the papal power, with all its abomination, is to continue, the wheat and tares grow together, and evil men and seducers wax worse and worse, as the Word of God declares.

That the mistake of Adventists in 1844 pertained to the nature of the event then to transpire, not to the time; that no prophetic period is given to reach to the second advent, but that the longest one, the two thousand and three hundred days of Daniel 8:14, terminated in that year, and brought us to an event called the cleansing of the sanctuary.

[John Osborne-Everyone who calls himself an Historic Seventh-day Adventist ought to be listening to what the husband of God’s prophet wrote in 1874, when he wrote that all time prophecy came to an end in 1844. Just a short time before this, his little wife had said exactly the same thing. If you do not believe that, you do not believe in Historic Adventism.]

That the sanctuary of the new covenant is the tabernacle of God in heaven, of which Paul speaks in Hebrews 8, and onward, of which our Lord, as great High Priest, is minister; that this sanctuary is the antitype of the Mosaic tabernacle, and that the priestly work of our Lord, connected therewith, is the antitype of the work of the Jewish priests of the former dispensation (Hebrews 8:1-5, etc.); that this is the sanctuary to be cleansed at the end of the 2300 days; what is termed its cleansing being in this case, as in the type, simply the entrance of the High Priest into the Most Holy Place, to finish the round of service connected therewith, by blotting out and removing from the sanctuary the sins which had been transferred to it by means of the ministration in the first apartment (Hebrews 9:22,23); and that this work, in the antitype, commencing in 1844, occupies a brief but indefinite space, at the conclusion of which the work of mercy for the world is finished.

That God’s moral requirements are the same upon all men in all dispensations; that these are summarily contained in the commandments spoken by Jehovah from Sinai, engraved on the tables of stone, and deposited in the ark, which was in consequence called the “ark of the covenant,” or testament for under the sounding of the seventh trumpet we are told that “the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament” (Revelation 11:19).

That the fourth commandment of this law requires that we devote the seventh day of each week, commonly called Saturday, to abstinence from our own labor, and to the performance of sacred and religious duties; that this is the only weekly Sabbath known to the Bible, being the day that was set apart before Paradise was lost (Genesis 2:2,3), and which will be observed in Paradise restored (Isaiah 66:22,23); that the facts upon which the Sabbath institution is based confine it to the seventh day, as they are not true of any other day; and that the terms Jewish Sabbath and Christian Sabbath , as applied to the weekly rest day, are names of human invention, un-Scriptural in fact, and false in meaning.
That, as the man of sin, the papacy has thought to change times and laws (the laws of God, Daniel 7:25), and has misled almost all Christendom in regard to the fourth commandment; we find a prophecy of a reform in this respect to be wrought among believers just before the coming of Christ, Isaiah 56:1,2; 1 Peter 1:5; Revelation 14:12, etc.

[John Osborne—Do you believe that God’s people in the last days are going to stand up and expose the man of sin, the papacy, and how he has changed the seventh day Sabbath? This is Historic Adventism.]

That, as the natural or carnal heart is at enmity with God and His law, this enmity can be subdued only by a radical transformation of the affections, the exchange of unholy for holy principles; that this transformation follows repentance and faith, is the special work of the Holy Spirit, and constitutes regeneration or conversion.

[John Osborne—This means that you are going to have a lifestyle change. When a person gives their heart to the Lord Jesus Christ, they change; they are a new creature in Jesus Christ.]

That, as all have violated the law of God, and cannot of themselves render obedience to His just requirements, we are dependent on Christ, first for justification from our past offenses, and, secondly, for grace whereby to render acceptable obedience to His holy law in time to come.

[John Osborne—Through the power and strength of Jesus Christ, you can be victorious over all sin in your life. Do you believe that?]

That the Spirit of God was promised to manifest itself in the church through certain gifts, enumerated especially in 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4; that these gifts are not designed to supersede, or take the place of, the Bible, which is sufficient to make us wise unto salvation, any more than the Bible can take the place of the Holy Spirit; that in specifying the various channels of its operation, that Spirit has simply made provision for its own existence and presence with the people of God to the end of time, to lead to an understanding of that Word which it had inspired, to convince of sin, and work a transformation in the heart and life; and that those who deny to the Spirit its place and operation do plainly deny that part of the Bible which assigns to it this work and position.

That God, in accordance with His uniform dealings with the race, sends forth a proclamation of the approach of the second advent of Christ; that this work is symbolized by the three messages of Revelation 14, the last one bringing to view the work of reform on the law of God, that His people may acquire a complete readiness for that event.

[John Osborne—If you are not willing to stand up, proclaim, teach and believe in the three angels of Revelation 14, you are not an historic Seventh-day Adventist.]

That the time of the cleansing of the sanctuary (see proposition 10), synchronizing with the time of the proclamation of the third message, is a time of investigative judgment, first, with reference to the dead, and, at the close of probation, with reference to the living, to determine who of the myriads now sleeping in the dust of the earth are worthy of a part in the first resurrection, and who of its living multitudes are worthy of translation—points which must be determined before the Lord appears.

That the grave, whither we all tend, expressed by the Hebrew sheol and the Greek hades, is a place of darkness in which there is no work, device, wisdom, or knowledge. Ecclesiastes 9:10.

[John Osborne—The grave is a place of sleep where the dead know not anything—waiting for the resurrection. What a beautiful message that is.]
That the state to which we are reduced by death is one of silence, inactivity and entire unconsciousness. Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5,6; Daniel 12:2; etc.

That out of this prison house of the grave, mankind are to be brought by a bodily resurrection; the righteous having part in the first resurrection, which takes place at the second resurrection, which takes place a thousand years thereafter. Revelation 20:4-6.

[John Osborne—Now do you understand that? There are going to be two resurrections—the righteous come forth when Christ comes; then there is the thousand year millennium; and after the thousand year millenium, the wicked come forth. Now the righteous come forth perfected, changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. The wicked, when they come up a thousand years later, come up the same way they went into the grave. Is that clear?]

That at the last trump, the living righteous are to be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and with the resurrected righteous are to be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, so forever to be with Lord.

That these immortalized ones are taken to heaven, to the New Jerusalem, the Father’s house in which there are many mansions (John 14:1-3), where they reign with Christ a thousand years, judging the world and fallen angels, that is, apportioning the punishment to be executed upon them at the close of the one thousand years (Revelation 20:4; 1 Corinithians 6:2,3); that during this time [thousand years] the earth lies in a desolated and chaotic condition (Jeremiah 4:20-27), described, as in the beginning, by the Greek term abussos, bottomless pit (Septuagint of Genesis 1:2); and that here Satan is confined during the thousand years (Revelation 20:1,2), and here finally destroyed (Revelation 20:10; Malachi 4:1); the theater of the ruin he has wrought in the universe, being appropriately made for a time his gloomy prison house, and then the place of his final execution.

[John Osborne—Christ comes in the clouds of heaven, the righteous are taken, the wicked are destroyed by the brightness of his coming. This earth is desolate, as Scripture says in Jeremiah 4:22,23. Satan is here with all his angels, but with no one to tempt. They cannot go anywhere; they have to just sit there bound with a great chain—a chain of circumstances—for a thousand years and think about the desolation they have caused.
The righteous living in heaven at this time are going over the records of the wicked dead. This is when you are going to be able to have your questions answered. If you have a question about a loved one that did not make it to heaven, you can see how the Holy Spirit worked on that person’s heart, but how they rejected His work. You are going to have all of your questions answered, and then your tears are going to be wiped away. There are going to be some tears when your loved ones do not make it to heaven; you are not going to have amnesia, but your tears will be wiped away.]

That at the end of the thousand years, the Lord descends with His people and the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2), the wicked dead are raised and come up upon the surface of the yet unrenewed earth, and gather about the city, the camp of the saints (Revelation 20:9), and fire comes down from God out of heaven, and devours them. They are then consumed root and branch (Malachi 4:1), becoming as though they had not been (Obadiah 15, 16). In this everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:9), the wicked meet the everlasting punishment threatened against them (Matthew 25:46). This is the perdition of ungodly men, the fire which consumes them being the fire for which “the heavens and the earth, which are now,” are kept in store, which shall melt even the elements with its intensity, and purge the earth from the deepest stains of the curse of sin. 2 Peter 3:7-12.

[John Osborne—At the end of the thousand years, the New Jerusalem will come down. The wicked are resurrected and Satan says, “We can take the city.” He is going to convince the wicked that they are the righteous and that the Antichrist and the wicked are inside the city, This is exactly what the secret rapture doctrine teaches. The dear people who believe the secret rapture doctrine believe that the Antichrist is going to have the Holy City and that the wicked are inside and the righteous are outside. They are being prepared to be deceived.
But, when the wicked try to take the city, fire is going to come down from God out of heaven and devour them. The Bible calls this God’s strange work, but he has to purify the universe of sin, once and for all, never to rise up again. ]

That a new heavens and earth shall spring by the power of God from the ashes of the old, to be, with the New Jerusalem for its metropolis and capital, the eternal inheritance of the saints, the place where the righteous shall evermore dwell. 2 Peter 3:13; Psalm 37:11, 29; Matthew 5:5.

[John Osborne—When somebody asks: “What is an Historic Seventh-day Adventist?” you may tell them: One who believes what our historic pioneers believed and taught, what they struggled, prayed, and pled with God to show them, and that which he confirmed for them through the Spirit of Prophecy. This is what it means to be an Historic Seventh-day Adventist.]

The End

God’s Telescope and Microscope

“Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; who is so great a God as our God?”

Psalm 77:13

“The subject of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked the mystery of the disappointment of 1844. It opened to view a complete system of truth, connected and harmonious.”
The Great Controversy, 423

As we begin this study, there is a concept that we need to understand. That concept is this: the sanctuary, the third angel’s message, the plan of redemption or new covenant, Christ the great center – all these terms refer to different facets of one great truth, the truth of God’s divine, omnipotent plan to redeem fallen man, to restore in man His image.

Our beginning quote from Inspiration gives us several critical pieces of information that will be the focus of our study. It says that the subject of the sanctuary is a complete system of truth. If something is complete, nothing more is needed. Nothing can be added. Nothing can be taken away, and still have completeness. This inspired statement also says the subject of the sanctuary is connected. Spend some time pondering and trying to grasp the meaning of that word, and what God is trying to communicate to us through that word. And then, lastly, these sentences declare that the subject of the sanctuary is one of harmony – it is in agreement, accord, coherence, with itself.

This study begins in the book Education from the chapter entitled “Mental and Spiritual Culture,” which begins on page 123, and is grand and beautiful in the significance of its words.

We need to have a context for the paragraphs we want to study, which we find in the first three sentences of the chapter. “For the mind and the soul, as well as for the body, it is God’s law that strength is acquired by effort. It is exercise that develops. In harmony with this law, God has provided in His word the means for mental and spiritual development.” We read here that in His holy word, we find the means for both the development of our mental faculties and for spiritual growth. Also stated is the fact that this is gained only through effort. These sentences introduce the focus of the chapter – mental and spiritual development.

In the next few paragraphs this thought is expanded, broadened, deepened and explained. Then follows the paragraph on which we are going to focus. It says, “In its wide range of style and subjects the Bible has something to interest every mind and appeal to every heart. In its pages are found history the most ancient; biography the truest to life; principles of government for the control of the state, for the regulation of the household [marriage and family life]—principles that human wisdom has never equaled. It contains philosophy the most profound, poetry the sweetest and the most sublime, the most impassioned and the most pathetic. Immeasurably superior in value to the productions of any human author are the Bible writings, even when thus considered; but of infinitely wider scope, of infinitely greater value, are they when viewed in their relation to the grand central thought. Viewed in the light of this thought, every topic has a new significance. In the most simply stated truths are involved principles that are as high as heaven and that compass eternity.” Education, 125.

The beauty, the grandeur, the depth, the breadth, the meaning in this paragraph gives food for a long period of prayerful thought and contemplation.

“The Bible contains all the principles necessary.” That means every aspect of life, every subject. There is tremendous food for thought just in that phrase. The Bible is immeasurably superior in value to the productions of any human author.

Let’s continue and we will read an astonishing and beautiful truth: “… but of infinitely wider scope, of infinitely greater value, are they when viewed in their relation to the grand central thought. Viewed in the light of this thought, every topic has a new significance. In the most simply stated truths are involved principles that are as high as heaven and that compass eternity.”

Oh, my friends, we add to immeasurable, the word infinitely. Another word with no comparison.0 Nothing even comes close. The Bible, when considered and understood in relation to the grand central thought is of infinitely greater value. Why? Why is its relation to the grand central thought so important that God says in this light it has infinitely greater scope and value? This question also is answered in the paragraph itself. It is because “in the most simply stated truths are involved principles that are as high as heaven and that compass eternity.”

Only through the understanding, acceptance and cooperation with this great central thought is salvation, life eternal, possible! Is it important to know what the grand central thought is? Yes. It is of vital, eternal consequence.

What is the grand central thought? Must human mind and wisdom define the grand central thought? No. Inspiration provides it in the very next paragraph. We read,

“The central theme of the Bible, the theme about which every other in the whole book clusters, is the redemption plan, the restoration in the human soul of the image of God. From the first intimation of hope in the sentence pronounced in Eden to that last glorious promise of the Revelation, ‘They shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads’ (Revelation 22:4), the burden of every book and every passage of the Bible is the unfolding of this wondrous theme—man’s uplifting—the power of God, ‘which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ’ (I Corinthians 15:57).” Education, 125, 126.

“He who grasps this thought has before him an infinite field for study. He has the key that will unlock to him the whole treasure house of God’s word.” Ibid., 126.

What beauty, what grandeur we find in these few sentences. What food for thought is found therein. God tells us to believe something only on the testimony of two or more witnesses. On this subject there are not just two, or three, or four, but many witnesses. But for the sake of space we will briefly consider two more quotes beautiful in simplicity and clarity on this subject.

This first paragraph gives us a setting for the one we wish to study. “There is nothing more calculated to strengthen the intellect than the study of the Scriptures. No other book is so potent to elevate the thoughts, to give vigor to the faculties, as the broad, ennobling truths of the Bible. If God’s word were studied as it should be, men would have a breadth of mind, a nobility of character, and a stability of purpose rarely seen in these times.” Steps to Christ, 90.

Here is the crucial thought: “But there is but little benefit derived from a hasty reading of the Scriptures. One may read the whole Bible through and yet fail to see its beauty or comprehend its deep and hidden meaning. One passage studied until its significance is clear to the mind and its relation to the plan of salvation is evident, is of more value than the perusal of many chapters with no definite purpose in view and no positive instruction gained.” Ibid.

Did you comprehend that? If we do not study each passage until we understand its significance and its relation to the plan of salvation, we have gained no positive instruction. We may have gleaned wonderful knowledge and understanding for temporal benefit, but we have not gained positive instruction for eternity.

What subjects are covered in the Bible? History, biography, government, marriage and family, philosophy, poetry. In fact, Inspiration tells us, “The Bible contains all the principles that men need to understand in order to be fitted either for this life or for the life to come.” Education, 123. There is no subject of life that is not covered in the Bible.

“The Sabbath school should be a place where the jewels of truth are searched for and rescued from their environment of error, and placed in their true setting in the framework of the gospel. … Sacred and eternal principles connected with the plan of salvation have long been lost from sight, but they must be restored to their proper place in the plan of salvation, and made to appear in their heavenly light, and penetrate the moral darkness in which the world is enshrouded.” Counsels on Sabbath School Work, 12, 13.

What are the jewels of truth spoken of here? They are simply the divine instructions for living a happy, peaceful, successful life. Sometimes we call them beliefs or doctrines. Again we find that these must be placed in the framework of the gospel—the plan of salvation—or they are in an environment of error.

Let us reason together now. Of what eternal value, in reality, is any belief that is disconnected from God’s plan and desire for our salvation? God has an intensity of interest in healing the broken relationship with mankind that mortal mind cannot comprehend. We are told over and over again that this interest, this purpose is the central theme, the grand central thought of the Bible. It is the theme of every passage, every book of the Bible. Dare we value any less, dare we place any less importance on this theme, this purpose, this goal than does the great God, the Creator, the Redeemer, the Sanctifier?

Let us remember what He says. The word of divinity is, “of infinitely wider scope, of infinitely greater value, are they when viewed in their relation to the grand central thought. Viewed in the light of this thought, every topic has a new significance. In the most simply stated truths are involved principles that are as high as heaven and that compass eternity.”

I know that old habits and thought patterns are difficult to change. But, we claim to worship and have faith in the great Creator of the universe. Does He not have the power, the ability to help us? Pray. Ask Him for help. Tell Him you want to understand every jewel of truth, every passage of His word and its significance and relation to His plan of salvation. Make a commitment, with faith in His promises, to study, to contemplate, to chew carefully and thoroughly, His great revelation to mankind. Commit that with the aid of His Holy Spirit that you will study His word as He has instructed. Study one passage at a time. Study for a depth of understanding that “infinitely” surpasses the “immeasurable” benefit of the scriptures gained through the Bible from a temporal viewpoint. Study for that eternal benefit, the benefit of the grand central thought—your redemption.

Understanding God’s Word

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do His commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” Psalm 111:10

The psalmist here states that before wisdom comes the knowledge and fear of the Lord.

What is Wisdom?

The word wisdom in the Hebrew language is Chokmah, a word which occurs 141 times in the Bible. Chokmah is comprehensive in its meaning.

  1. technical knowledge (Exodus 28:3; 35:26)
  2. practical, worldly wisdom (I Kings 4:30; Isaiah 47:10)
  3. ideal human wisdom (Psalm 111:10; Prov. 1:2)
  4. wisdom as an attribute of God (Psalm 104:24; Proverbs 3:19; Jeremiah 10:12; 51:15)

Wisdom is distinguished from knowledge in that wisdom has to do with character and conduct, whereas knowledge is primarily intellectual enlightenment. Knowledge may be an accumulation of unrelated and unorganized facts without the ability to apply these facts to personal life. Wisdom is the faculty of being able to make a practical use of facts.

What is Understanding?

An intermediate step may be conceived of in the term understanding. Understanding implies the ability to evaluate and organize facts which is an essential framework for wisdom.

The word understanding as found in Psalm 111:10 originates from a Hebrew word which means, intelligence; success; discretion; knowledge; policy; sense; wisdom.

So while understanding has to do with the ability or power to acquire and interpret knowledge, while it has to do with the mental faculties, intelligence, and the ability to comprehend according to the Holy Scriptures, it is intimately connected to wisdom, which makes a practical use of facts, for it has to do with character and conduct.

So we read again, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do His commandments: his praise endureth for ever” (Psalm 111:10).

Therefore, divine understanding cannot be separated from obedience. Obedience to God’s revealed will demonstrates that a person has true understanding.

But what about those who do not know God or those who profess to believe in Him but disobey Him? Are they without understanding?

Jeremiah said, “Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom … But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the Lord … ” (Jeremiah 9:23, 24).

The man who knows not God or the man who professes to know Him but does not obey has understanding, but it is not true or divine understanding; it is that understanding that allows man to glory or that uplifts himself instead of his Creator.

Paul says of such men that while they possess understanding yet their understanding is darkened. “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart” (Ephesians 4:17, 18).

What Causes Complete Blindness?

Jesus taught, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness” (Matthew 6:22, 23)!

The “light” of the body is that insight that places relative value on the things of time and eternity. When Jesus used the word “eye,” He was addressing the eye of the soul that gives a man heavenly vision, and that enables him to behold that which is invisible to the natural eyesight. Such eyesight is a guide to the soul in the same way that physical eyesight is a guide to the body. Hebrews 11:27 reads, “By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.” And 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Ellen White, commenting on the words of Jesus, points out, “But when the eye is blinded by the love of self, there is only darkness. ‘If thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness’ (Matthew 6:23).” Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 91.

The apostle John tells us also what causes spiritual blindness, “But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes” (I John 2: 11).

The word darkness is derived from a root word which means shadiness or more specifically darkness of error.

Even among Christians are many whose understanding is darkened because of a failure to obey God.

As a reminder, “Disobedience has closed the door to a vast amount of knowledge that might have been gained from the Scriptures. Understanding means obedience to God’s commandments. The Scriptures are not to be adapted to meet the prejudice and jealousy of men. They can be understood only by those who are humbly seeking for a knowledge of the truth that they may obey it.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 112.

Who causes the understanding of human beings to become darkened?

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:3, 4).

Who is the “god of this world”?

The devil claims to be the god of this world – “Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me” (Matthew 4:8, 9; I John 5:19).

He is “the god of this world” because the world is largely under his control. He rules in the hearts of most of its inhabitants – “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins: Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:1, 2).

Satan is also called by other titles:

  • “Prince of this world.” (See John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11.)
  • “Prince of the power of the air.” (Ephesians 2:2.)

Therefore it is he who darkens people’s minds by way of all manner of sinful practices. Satan’s principal work is to blind or darken men’s minds.

Summary of how Satan darkens human beings’ minds

  • By keeping them from the study of God’s word.
  • By deranging the power of the mind through excesses.
  • By wholly occupying the mind with things of this life.
  • By appealing to pride and self-exaltation.

Keep in mind – the battle between Christ and Satan is a battle for the minds of men (see Romans 7:23, 25).

Twelve Ways the Understanding Becomes Darkened!

  1. Sin darkens the understanding – “The enlightening of the understanding must become a part of the experience. Sin has darkened the reasoning powers, and hell is triumphing.” Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 7, 22. “Blindness of the heart is a terrible barrier to the discerning of truth. … Sin is the disease of the soul, in consequence of which the understanding fails to do its appointed work on the heart and memory.” Elder Daniels and the Fresno Church, Pamphlet 28, 6, 7.
  2. Failure to heed the call to repentance – “During the preceding months of the Baptist’s ministry, many had refused to heed the call to repentance. Thus they had hardened their hearts and darkened their understanding.” The Desire of Ages, 136.
  3. By rejecting former messages – “Those who rejected the first message could not be benefited by the second; neither were they benefited by the midnight cry, which was to prepare them to enter with Jesus by faith into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. And by rejecting the two former messages, they have so darkened their understanding that they can see no light in the third angel’s message, which shows the way into the most holy place.” Early Writings, 260, 261.
  4. By the use of alcoholic/strong drink – Satan “tempts men to the use of wine and strong drink, by which the understanding is darkened, the senses confused, and the image of God defaced.” Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists, 187.
  5. Impure thoughts, actions and willful disobedience – “Impurity in thought or practice obscures spiritual vision, so that the soul can not contemplate and be charmed with the character of God. The world is full of disobedience, and the understanding of men has become so darkened by a sinful course of action that righteousness is not clearly discerned, and is not therefore appreciated above unrighteousness.” The Signs of the Times, October 3, 1895.
  6. By cherishing doubt – “There are those who walk amid perpetual doubts. They feed on doubts, enjoy doubts, talk doubts, and question everything that it is for their interest to believe. To those who thus trifle with the plain testimonies of God’s word, and who refuse to believe because it is inconvenient and unpopular to do so, the light will finally become darkness; truth will appear to the darkened understanding as error, and error will be accepted as truth. When thus shrouded in error, they will find it perfectly natural and convenient to believe what is false, and will become strong in their faith.” The Review and Herald, January 5, 1886.
  7. Because of continual transgression – “It was the love of God toward the children of men that moved Him to proclaim His law from Sinai. Because the understanding of men had become darkened by continual transgression, God, in his infinite mercy, condescended to bestow upon them the living oracles in all their original purity.” The Signs of the Times, December 2, 1880.
  8. Allowing the Devil access to our minds – “When the Pharisees expressed their discontent because of the class of people with whom He mingled, Jesus set the matter before them in the parable of the lost sheep. But their understanding was darkened; for Satan had power over their minds, and they arrayed themselves in opposition to Jesus.” Ibid., November 20, 1893.
  9. Because of the false theories of Satan – “The idols of the heathen stood between them and their God, obscuring God from their vision. Thus it is today. By the cunning deception of Satan false theories are made a power to rob God. Man’s spiritual understanding is darkened by Satan’s sophistry.” Manuscript Releases, vol. 12, 221.
  10. By defects of character – “By some the truth has been preached for a lifetime, but the understanding, darkened by defects of character which are not overcome, prevents them from discovering truth in its matchless loveliness.” Ibid., vol. 20, 180.
  11. By exalting one’s idea above God’s will – “Those who exalt their own ideas above the plainly specified will of God are saying, as did Pharaoh, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice’ (Exodus 5:1)? Every rejection of light hardens the heart and darkens the understanding; and thus people find it more and more difficult to distinguish between right and wrong, and they become bolder in resisting the will of God.” Christ Triumphant, 109.
  12. Because of deliberately stifling one’s convictions of duty – “He who deliberately stifles his convictions of duty because it interferes with his inclinations, will finally lose the power to distinguish between truth and error. The understanding becomes darkened, the conscience callous, the heart hardened, and the soul is separated from God. Where the message of divine truth is spurned or slighted, there the church will be enshrouded in darkness; faith and love grow cold, and estrangement and dissension enter. Church-members center their interests and energies in worldly pursuits, and sinners become hardened in their impenitence.” The Great Controversy, 1888, 379.

Who Is It that Enlightens the Understanding of Human Beings?

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints” (Ephesians 1:17, 18).

In commenting on these verses, God’s messenger records, “The ministry of the divine Spirit in enlightening the understanding and opening to the mind the deep things of God’s holy word, was the blessing which Paul thus besought for the Ephesian church.” The Great Controversy, 9.

The apostle John wrote, “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you” (John 16:13, 14).

God’s Servant wrote, “The work of the Holy Spirit is to enlighten the darkened understanding, to melt the selfish, stony heart, to subdue the rebellious transgressor, and save him from the corrupting influences of the world.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 441.

What Should Be Our Attitude Concerning Being Enlightened?

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5, 6).

“You should cultivate a spirit of entire submission to the will of God, earnestly, humbly seeking to know His ways and to follow the leadings of His Spirit. You must not lean to your own understanding. You should have deep distrust of your own wisdom and supposed prudence.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 361, 360.

“It is unsafe for men to lean to their own understanding; therefore they should daily seek strength and wisdom from above. God should be in all their thoughts; then all the wiles and subtleties of the old serpent cannot betray them into sinful neglect of duty. They will meet the adversary with the simple weapon that Christ used, ‘It is written,’ or will repulse him with, ‘Get thee behind Me, Satan’ (Matthew 16:23).” Ibid., vol. 5, 409.

Why Is It Unsafe for Man to Lean to His Own Understanding?

“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart” (Ephesians 4:17, 18).

In The General Conference Bulletin, April 1, 1899, we are also given the answer, “Through the power and work of Satan, the world has mistaken and forgotten God, and is living in sin. Man’s influence works against God. His knowledge of God and His word is perverted. His understanding is darkened.”

Today, Jesus wants to do for you and I what He did for the disciples.

“And He said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning Me. Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:44, 45).

How to Study the Word

By Marshall J. Grosboll

How to Study the WordA master deception

The prophecies foretell of a coming master deception to the Christian world: “He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do” Revelation 13: 13, 14. (Texts are from either the KJV or NKJV.)

In Acts 2, when fire came down from heaven, the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples. In the last days, there is going to be a counterfeit outpouring of the Holy Spirit (fire from heaven) that is going to deceive the world. Even many Christians will be deceived, for Satan will “deceive, if possible, even the elect” Matthew 24: 24.

That is why Satan will use Christian ministers to be his agents— he would not deceive Christians with witch doctors! Satan’s ambassadors come “transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness” 2 Corinthians 11: 13– 15.

The coming of the false outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the counterfeit Christ will be with “all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved” 2 Thessalonians 2: 9, 10.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warned that many Christians who call Him “Lord, Lord,” who think that they are saved, who have known and taught the prophecies, who have had spiritual gifts and have done many wonderful things in His name, will find out too fate that they are forever lost. Jesus will say to them: “1 never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” Matthew 7: 21– 23.

It will be among God’s professed people that “Satan will take the field and personate Christ. to deceive, if possible, the very elect” Testimonies to Ministers, 411. Anytime God’s people begin to seek for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, without a corresponding interest in knowing and following the truth, they are in danger of having their prayers answered by the wrong spirit. If most of the world is going to be deceived, how can we keep from being deceived ourselves?

Only Bible students saved!

The answer comes from the following insight, taken from one of the greatest books I have ever read, The Great Controversy:

“Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive. By the Bible testimony these will detect the deceiver in his disguise. To all the testing time will come. By the sifting of temptation the genuine Christian will be revealed. Are the people of God now so firmly established upon His word that they would not yield to the evidence of their senses? Would they, in such a crisis, cling to the Bible and the Bible only? Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief”— pp. 625, 626.

This brief passage summarizes the teaching of the Bible on this point. The word that jumps out at me in this passage is the word “only.” Is it true that only those who have been “diligent students of the scriptures,” and those who have “received the love of the truth,” will be saved from delusion and found ready when Jesus comes?

Why only a few will be saved

Many will find out too late that the prophetic warnings are all too true. Many who have been professed followers of Christ— faithful in tithes and offerings, leaders in various departments of the church, preachers of the Word, and who truly believe that they are saved because they “know the truth,”— will find out, too late, that they have been sadly deceived because they never had time to become “diligent students of the Word.”

“Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” Matthew 7: 14. While only a few will be saved, many will think they have been saved because they have been a part of the church and active in supporting the Lord’s institutions and spreading His message (see Matthew 7: 21— 23). “But a small number of those now professing to believe the truth . . . [will] eventually be saved— not because they could not be saved, but because they would not be saved in God’s own appointed way” Testimonies, vol. 2, 445.

Why only a small number? Because the majority have not been diligent students of the Word nor received the love of the truth. Thus they have been deceived into thinking they are saved, into thinking they have received the Holy Spirit, when they are yet in their sins.

Note again these two essentials: (1) We must become, not just surface readers, but diligent students of the Word, and (2) we must study it with the right attitude (because we love the troth). The scribes and Pharisees in Jesus’ day were great students of the Word, but they studied it for argument’s sake and to support preconceived ideas. They did not crucify the lusts of the flesh nor the pride of opinion, but rather they studied the Word to elevate themselves and their ideas.

Ways to study the Word

Though we must be willing for God to teach us new truth, we must not study the Word in order to find something new and exciting (to show our superior wisdom). One of the things that led the early church into apostasy during the first few centuries was that they “had become wearied of the oft- repeated truths. They desired a new phase of doctrine, more pleasing to many minds” Seventh- day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 958.

Nor is our study to be primarily for the conversion of other people, although our study will help enable us to witness better. We are not to study in order to earn merits with the Lord. We are not to study in order to prove our opinions right. Neither are we to study in order to appear pious to other people. “How many are lost by their effort to keep up a name! If one has the reputation of being a successful evangelist, a gifted preacher, a man of prayer, a man of faith, a man of special devotion, there is positive danger that he will make shipwreck of faith when tried by the little tests that God suffers to come. Often his great effort will be to maintain his reputation” Ibid.

But rather, we are to study in order to learn the will of God for our own lives, personally. We are to study in order to allow the Holy Spirit an opportunity to change our characters into the likeness of Jesus’ character. Unless we spend this personal time with the Word so that this character change can happen, we cannot be saved!

Of course, God makes up the difference for those who are blind or who have no access to the Bible or who have some other handicap that makes it impossible to study on their own. But for those to whom God has given the abilities to read and has provided them with the Word, He will not make up the difference. Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him” John 6: 53— 56. Thus Jesus warned that only those who eat His flesh will have eternal life, and He identifies that flesh in verse 63 as, not His literal body, but the words which He speaks.

Peter describes how the Christian can receive the new life in Christ in 2 Peter 1: 3, 4. He says, “As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” Thus we receive the “divine nature” through the promises of the Word and the knowledge of Jesus Christ. As Jesus said in John 17: 3, 17: “And this is life eternal, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent… Sanctify them by Your truth, Your word is truth.”

How could anything be more plain? We cannot expect to reach heaven unless we are spending serious, diligent time in the Word! I may decide that I am a solitary exception to this rule, but like millions of others, I will find out too late that I am no exception. There is no amount of tithe or offerings that can be given to make up for our need of personal Bible study. It cannot be done by proxy. There is no preacher we can pay to do it for us. There is no profession or church activity that can make up for this need of personal devotion with the Lord.

How to increase your intelligence!

Before entering the gospel ministry, the Lord graciously showed me the need and blessings of Bible study. I had always felt a call to the pastoral ministry and was starting out my freshman year at a Christian college in preparation for this calling.

My brother had graduated from the same college the year before and had made good grades, so they thought I would be a good student also. Thus they allowed me to choose however heavy a study load I thought I could handle. I took Theology I, History, Freshman Composition, five hours of Greek and a few other courses that equaled 17 hours of credit— a fairly heavy load.

Now, while “the spirit was willing” to handle this much study, the flesh was weak. While I wanted to do well, I had never really learned how to apply myself to study. I was much more adept at playing tennis and other enjoyable things than I was at sitting at a desk. I was also working part- time to help defray the cost of my tuition. As the weeks passed, my grades got further and further behind.

Two weeks before the end of the first quarter, many of the teachers gave preliminary grades to the freshmen to help them know how to study for their final tests. They displayed the cumulative points for the quarter for each student on the board and each student was given their points so they could see where they ranked in relationship to all others. Lines were drawn between certain numbers on the board indicating grades of A, B, C, D and F. To my horror, out of 17 hours I had accumulated 11 hours of solid F, and in two of those courses, including Greek, I was the lowest F in the class! My doom was nigh! I felt sure that my college career was nearly over. I said, “Lord, I’m sorry! You called me into the ministry but I have failed You. Look what a miserable job I have done.”

But the Lord brought to my mind a statement on page 90 from another favorite little book of mine, Steps to Christ. The statement reads:

“There is nothing more calculated to strengthen the intellect than the study of the Scriptures. No other book is so potent to elevate the thoughts, to give vigor to the faculties, as the broad, ennobling truths of the Bible. If God’s word were studied as it should be, men would have a breadth of mind, a nobility of character, and a stability of purpose rarely seen in these times.” With this statement in mind, I decided to do an experiment. I made a covenant with the Lord. I said: “Lord, I’ve failed You and I’m sorry. But starting today, I would like to make a covenant with You to spend at least an hour every day with Your Word. I am not asking You to do anything specific, except to help me keep my part of the covenant. You do whatever You want with my life.”

I thought I had always spent some time with the Word each day before, but it must have been very little. I guess if a person spends 10 or 15 minutes a day with the Word, he thinks he has accomplished a great feat. But when I tried to spend a whole hour with the Word, I found it was the hardest, most boring thing I had ever done in my life! I could have spent two or three hours with the television or playing basketball without any problem— but an hour with the Word! Yet I had made a covenant and I was determined to keep it, even if it killed me! Day after day I forced myself to sit and study my Bible. I could hardly sit there for that whole period of time, but I stuck it through.

After a month or two, the strangest thing began to happen. The Word began to be interesting! Pretty soon I found myself spending two hours and even three hours at a time with the Word, just like other people do with television, not realizing how the time had gone by. Something else was also happening. The Lord worked a miracle in my studies— in the two- week period I had remaining before the close of the first quarter, the Lord helped me to bring every grade up to a C! Now a C may not be anything to write home about, but for me, coming out of the pit I was in, it was a miracle! I could hardly believe that Scripture study could actually make that much difference!

I kept on studying an hour a day, and by the next year the lowest grade I made was a B. I continued to spend the time studying the Word systematically every day and my grades continued to climb right through graduate school. I was not doing a lot more studying than before, but I had learned to study more efficiently and my mind was retaining and comprehending more.

The discipline never ends

I found something else very interesting. Over the years I have tried to keep that covenant with the Lord, but after more than two decades I find that it is just as hard to get into the Word every morning today as it was the day I began. The only difference is that once I sit down to study the Word now, it is even more interesting than I found it after those first few months of study. As David said, God’s word is “sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb” Psalm 19: 10. The Word becomes more enjoyable every day it is read, but I still have to discipline myself to begin my study each morning.

There is a determined foe who works every day to prevent me from finding time to do what I know I must. As the earlier statement from The Great Controversy says, “Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief’— p. 625.

I am convinced that Satan must spend hours dreaming up schemes just to keep me from finding time to read the Word. I find if I do not get it done in the morning, generally things become so complicated during the day that there is never a moment to sit down and read the Word until I am so tired I cannot concentrate anymore on what I am reading.

So over the years, I have had to make sacrifices and decisions as to whether I would study the Word or not. I remember taking a college Biology class which was very difficult. I thought the teacher must be trying to weed out some of the pre- med students. With 204 students in his class, he gave only four A’s— just two percent!— which I thought was far too low. I was working four hours a day, taking a full class load and was spending that hour a day with the Word. Yet, though I concentrated as hard as I could in class, I found out that I had very little time to prepare for the final exam. After I got off work the day of the exam, I had one hour and 45 minutes before test time, and I had not yet studied for the final. So I faced a decision: Would I put my Bible study off until after class or some time that evening and spend my hour and 45 minutes preparing for the test, or should I spend my hour with the Bible first and then a mere 45 minutes preparing for my final exam? I chose the latter, by faith.

A close friend of mine, who was not working or spending consistent time with the Bible, studied hard for two weeks in preparation for that exam. I had but 45 minutes! I asked the Lord to make my mind as clear and sharp as possible, and to help me know what I should study during that short period of time. When the exam came, my mind was able to recall nearly everything we had covered in class, and I received one of those four A’s. My friend could not understand what had happened since he had spent much more time studying than I had but ended up with a lower grade. Another difficult time I remember was when I was taking Anatomy and Physiology. It was a college summer course where a normal half- year course is crammed into just six weeks, with four hours of lecture a day. If you missed a day, it was like missing a week in a regular college course. My uncle died during the middle of the course and I was one of the pallbearers. Because of the funeral preparations, I had not had a chance to prepare for my mid- term test. I got back from the funeral just one hour before I was to take the test. Again, somehow I had not spent the time in my devotions that day and I had a choice to make— Bible study or Anatomy and Physiology. I told the Lord: “Lord, I may have to take this course over again. I may flunk. But I would rather flunk Anatomy and Physiology than my course for eternal life! Help me with my devotions over this next hour.” I went to that test without having prepared one minute, yet the Lord helped me in that emergency to get a very good grade. The Lord promises: “Those who honor Me I will honor” 1 Samuel 2: 30.

These experiences are miracles which the Lord performed. He will not make up for our willful negligence, but if we make Him first, and then do the best we can, He will help us out of every emergency. On the other hand, if we should spend an hour in Bible study and then watch television the rest of the day, hoping God will somehow help us in some assignment we may have, we would be utterly disappointed. I am sure that had I not been doing the best I could at all other times in my studies, the Lord would not have helped in these emergency situations. But the Lord was also testing me to see what I would put first— my earthly schooling or my heavenly schooling.

I wish I could say I have passed every test of the Lord like those two, but too many times I have had to learn the same lesson by failure— putting the Lord last never works.

Every day you are also being tested. There are a thousand things to keep you from the Word if you allow them to. In fact, there is probably only one way you can get in the daily, faithful Bible study that you need for salvation, and that is to make it the highest priority of your life; to be willing to sacrifice anything and everything in order to spend that time with the Lord.

God is not looking for hermits or monks. He is not asking us to spend eight or ten hours a day with the Word. That would be fanaticism. Studying the Word is like our daily food; if we spent eight hours a day eating our physical food, we would be bloated and useless. And so it is with our spiritual food. If we did nothing else but study, we would be useless Christians.

But though we are not to eat all day long, we should spend some time every day eating. And we should eat the best food available. When we combine good food with exercise, sunshine, fresh air, rest, pure water, temperance, and trust in divine power, the Lord blesses us with abundant health. Thus it is with our spiritual food— the Bible— and our spiritual health. Eating is not the only thing we need, but if we do not eat, we will die.

What should we study?

First of all, it should be realized that there is no supplement for God’s Word. The Word should remain the basis of all our study.

Although there are a number of profitable magazines and books of a spiritual nature, some of which I try to read in my spare time, devotional time itself should be dedicated to the Word alone. During my covenanted hour of devotional time with the Lord, I allow myself to read and study nothing but the inspired words of God. Nothing else counts as a part of that time, and nothing else is read or studied until that time is over. I try to read from both the Old and New Testament in a consistent manner, and when studying a particular subject, I try to read everything of seeming importance from the Bible about that subject, instead of just skipping from one passage to another with no definite plan or goal in mind. I find this method of consistent study gives a balanced spiritual “diet.”

How should I begin?

There are two basic ways of studying: The first is to read and study certain books of the Bible, such as Matthew, Isaiah, Revelation, or even the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The second method is to pick out certain subjects, such as the “second coming of Jesus,” “baptism,” “how to overcome sin,” “law and grace,” et cetera, and to look up everything the Bible says about that subject, comparing text with text.

I try to do both. I generally like to pick out two books of the Bible to read— one from the New Testament and one from the Old Testament. I will spend part of the time on one book and part on the other. As I come upon a subject that I am not sure of or would like to know more about, I look up everything else in the Bible about that subject. I may thus spend several days on one verse. To do this, you need a good concordance, such as Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance or Young’s Exhaustive Concordance, or one of the new computer Bible programs that helps you to find all the verses on any subject or word in the Bible. The concordances in the back of most Bibles are rather worthless because they are so selective in what they are able to list that they often do not list the very texts that explain the subject best.

We must do more than just read the Bible. We must study it. Do not worry about how far you get into the book each day. Do not set yourself a goal to read so many pages or chapters a day. But rather set yourself time goals and go no faster or further than the mind can comprehend and you can put into practice. “There is but little benefit derived from a hasty reading of the Scriptures. One may read the whole Bible through and yet fail to see its beauty or comprehend its deep and hidden meaning. One passage studied until its significance is clear to the mind and its relation to the plan of salvation is evident, is of more value than the perusal of many chapters with no definite purpose in view and no positive instruction gained” Steps to Christ, 90.

How much better would it be for one who is reading the Bible to come upon one of God’s holy commandments that he is not obeying and spend days, or weeks if necessary, on that one passage until it is understood in relationship to the rest of the Bible and in relationship to his obligation to the Lord, and to choose to obey it, than to merely hurry on and finish reading the Bible in some prescribed length of time with no real benefit gained?

Be careful not to rush through your study, but on the other hand, do not allow yourself to get bogged down in trivia. There are elements of Scripture that are comparatively unimportant for salvation. Some people specialize on minor points and overlook the major points of the Bible. Paul says to give no “heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith” 1 Timothy 1: 4. Even in Bible study there are a thousand things, which may not be the most important, to absorb one’s time. One person I know began to study everything the Bible said about “dogs.” That may be interesting, but is it profitable?

We should read the Bible and know what it contains from Genesis to Revelation. Yet, if we simply read the Bible without any deeper study than mere reading, we will never understand the deeper messages that God has hidden in it for us. Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field” Matthew 13: 44. God intends for us to dig deep, to search for treasure, to be diligent students. We must study “line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little” Isaiah 28: 10.

If an individual has not studied the Bible before, I recommend this plan of study: Spend a half- hour a day reading the Bible through. Read it through from Genesis to Revelation the first time so that you have at least read everything it contains. Then spend a half- hour studying the Bible by subject. Purchase a good concordance to help you in this study. Steps to Life has an excellent, free Bible course that categorizes many important subjects of the Bible and gives you the Bible texts to look up on each subject. Thousands of people have been helped by these lessons. Like others, you may find it profitable to spend a half- hour a day reading the Bible through, and then a half- hour in studying the Bible by subjects, using the Steps to Life lessons as a help in finding the different subjects. All you have to do to receive these important lessons for your own personal study is to write and ask for them and we will begin to send them to you with no obligation whatsoever. This is a part of our ministry for the Lord. The address and phone number are on the back of this booklet.

It is important to do both kinds of study: To study certain subjects in detail as well as to find out what the whole Bible says. When Satan quoted the Scriptures to Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus replied that “Man shall live. . . by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” Matthew 4: 4. So we need to know the whole Word. Yet there are certain portions of the Scriptures to which we must give special attention. Two of these are the life of Christ and the prophecies for the last days. One author says: “It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones.. . . If we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitence and humiliation at the foot of the cross” The Desire of Ages, 83.

As you begin your study of the Bible, ask God to guide you; He has promised to do so. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” Matthew 7: 7, 8.

Daniel and Revelation

The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation need to be prayerfully studied. “Read the book of Daniel. Call up, point by point, the history of the kingdoms there represented. Behold statesmen, councils, powerful armies, and see how God wrought to abase the pride of men, and lay human glory in the dust..

“The light that Daniel received from God was given especially for these last days…. All the events foretold will soon come to pass. . . .

“The book of Revelation opens with an injunction to us to understand the instruction it contains When we . .. understand what this book means … [there will come] a great revival” Testimonies to Ministers, 112, 113.

Be afraid of human invention and guess work in the interpretation of these books. Study them carefully, allowing the Scriptures to interpret their meaning. One of the finest books to help in the understanding of Daniel and Revelation is the book The Great Controversy, which combines history with prophecy. This book will add light to these prophecies. Let the light of prophecy illuminate prophecy rather than human speculation. That is not saying that the Lord is not going to add new light to the understanding of Daniel and Revelation, but the new light will never contradict established truth. There is within the heart of man a constant yearning for uniqueness, for some new theory to attach one’s name to, and to surpass one’s fellow men in understanding and recognition.

We should not reject any light that the Lord, out of love, may send us, but we should not accept new light without careful and prayerful study for ourselves from the Inspired Word. What we think is light may sound very good at first, but may eventually lead far away from real truth.

“So closely will the counterfeit resemble the true that it will be impossible to distinguish between them except by the Holy Scriptures. . . . [Thus] we should day by day study the Bible diligently, weighing every thought and comparing scripture with scripture. With divine help we are to form our opinions for ourselves as we are to answer for ourselves before God….

“We should exert all the powers of the mind in the study of the Scriptures and should task the understanding to comprehend, as far as mortals can, the deep things of God; yet we must not forget that the docility and submission of a child is the true spirit of the learner. Scriptural difficulties can never be mastered by the same methods that are employed in grappling with philosophical problems. We should not engage in the study of the Bible with that self- reliance with which so many enter the domains of science, but with a prayerful dependence upon God and a sincere desire to learn His will. We must come with a humble and teachable spirit to obtain knowledge from the great I AM. Otherwise, evil angels will so blind our minds and harden our hearts that we shall not be impressed by the truth” The Great Controversy, 593– 599. Today there are many surface readers of Scripture who are not prepared for the emotional, heart- touching manifestations of power and counterfeit teachings of the last days which will shake many people out of the truth. “When the shaking comes, by the introduction of false theories, these surface readers, anchored nowhere, are like shifting sand. They slide into any position to suit the tenor of their feelings” Testimonies to Ministers, 112.

Two special reasons for Bible study

There are two basic and specific reasons for becoming diligent students of the Scriptures. The first reason is so that we might know the truth and be shielded from the deceptions and delusions of Satan that are to take the church and the world captive. The second reason is that we might have power to overcome sin and have Jesus’ character formed within. “Temptations often appear irresistible because, through neglect of prayer and the study of the Bible, the tempted one cannot readily remember God’s promises and meet Satan with the Scripture weapons” The Great Controversy, 600.

Special Bible study helps

Before every great event of history, such as the Flood, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the first coming of Jesus, God has sought to warn the world and to prepare His people for the events foretold by sending a call for revival and reformation through messengers of His own choosing. He has promised to do so again before the greatest event of all— the second coming of Jesus.

I have found two books to be like special messengers that the Lord has sent to my life, and the life of many others, to help better understand the Bible. The Bible says we are not to accept every purported preacher or message that supposedly comes from the Lord, for there will be many false shepherds. And yet, the Lord does send true messages, too, because He loves us. Thus we must neither gullibly accept, nor carelessly reject, any light that the Lord may send, but we must test it by the tests of the Bible— never by feeling. Some of the tests are found in Isaiah 8: 20; Matthew 7: 15– 20; 1 Corinthians 14: 22; 1 John 4: 1– 3; Galatians 1: 8; Revelation 12: 17 compared to 19: 10; Revelation 14: 12 and James 1: 17. Any preacher or messenger of the Lord who teaches something that is contrary to the Bible is not from God.

The Bible says of those in Berea that they “were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word [of Paul] with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, [to find] whether those things [which Paul was teaching] were so” Acts 17: 11. The Bible must always remain paramount. Even if God sends a true preacher, he can never take the place of the Bible. I must never substitute anyone’s preaching for personal devotions. But there are, occasionally, those rare books or preachers that God especially uses to lead one to Bible truth. As Paul says: “How shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” Romans 10: 14, 15.

The two books that I have found to be like messengers from the Lord to my life are The Great Controversy and The Desire of Ages. These have helped me more than any other source, outside of the Bible itself, in my Christian growth. The Great Controversy, on the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, covers the prophetic events of history from the days of the apostles until the end of time. The Desire of Ages is on the life of Christ, which is my favorite topic.

One year when I was in graduate school I got up each day at 4: 00 AM. and studied for two hours on the life of Jesus. During that time I read The Desire of Ages through, looking up every Bible passage used or referred to (which was nearly 3,000) in the book. I generally ended up reading the whole passage in the Bible to get the context of the verse used. I had never realized before how the whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, talked so much about Jesus. When I finished I had a clearer grasp and appreciation of the plan of salvation than I had ever had before, and I had a stronger desire to follow Jesus and be true to His calling.

Years later I read the same book through again, and it was as though I was again reconverted. I again fell in love with Jesus even more than ever before. This time I coded different Bible subjects presented in the book in connection with the life of Christ. You can code different subjects by using different colors of markers, or, as I do, by using symbols and abbreviations. In this study, I cross- referenced every statement on the incarnation and the nature of Christ (coded “I” in the margin), the love of Christ (“ L”), church organization (“ O”)— which there is a surprising amount about in the gospels,— victorious living (“ V”), how to have devotions (“ D”) and how to witness (“ W”). I soon found there was another subject I should have coded— humility and selfsurrender (“ S”).

This same plan of coding for future study and reference can be followed with any book of the Bible. You need to read the book through, first to find out what its general theme is, and then prayerfully pick out the subjects you think the Lord is trying to teach you in that book. Then, read the book through again, coding and cross- referencing the verses that talk about each subject.

Getting children started with the Bible

As apparent in this morally degenerate age, l am very conscious of my children’s Christian experience. I want them to be with me in heaven, yet I know that I cannot save them. The Bible says, “‘ Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in [the land] ‘ . . . ,says the Lord God, ‘they would deliver neither son nor daughter; they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness’ “ Ezekiel 14: 20.

I know that if my children are going to be with me eternally, they must individually accept Jesus as their personal Saviour. They cannot inherit eternal life because of my conversion. I can set them the right example, but they must develop their own characters for heaven; and this can be done only by spending time in prayer and the Word, and then in living the victorious Christian life through the grace given them of the Lord.

When does that start? We started praying with our children and reading to them from the Bible every morning and evening from the time of their birth. We wanted the habit of Bible study to be there from their earliest recollection and even before.

As the children grew older and began to comprehend, we did not want to bore them with the Bible (we wanted them to love it!), so we would read short passages from the Bible and then tell them Bible stories on their own level. Sometimes we used Bible felts to illustrate the stories.

We also tried to instill in them the importance of having their own personal devotions, even apart from family worship. We taught them to commit themselves to God in prayer as soon as they were awake and then to read their Bibles. Before they could read on their own, we bought cassette players and Bible story tapes for them to listen to. We made sure the cassette players did not have radios with them— we did not want them filling their minds with today’s popular songs.

God said: “Hear, 0 Israel . . . You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart; you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up Deuteronomy 6: 4– 6.

Seven divine rules of study

First Rule of Study

1. We must believe that the Bible, and the whole Bible, is inspired by God. As soon as we begin to decide what portions are inspired and what portions are not inspired, we set ourselves above the Bible and can no longer be taught by the Bible. God abhors such pride and self- sufficiency. The Bible says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3: 16,17. The Bible was written by human penmen. It is not, except for the Ten Commandments, the very words of God, but it is the thoughts of God expressed through human agents. Different agents may use different expressions and different words, but every sentiment and thought is as infallible as the throne of God. There may indeed be inadvertent mistakes in copies, translations, or even the recording of certain details. Matthew records that there were two demoniacs and Mark mentions one, but these are not areas that should trouble the mind. God knew how to give the Word and He knows how to preserve it, and any criticism of the Word is criticism of God Himself. “Some . . . say, ‘Don’t you think there might have been some mistake in the copyist or in the translators? ‘ This is all probable, and the mind that is so narrow that it will hesitate and stumble over this possibility or probability would be just as ready to stumble over the mysteries of the Inspired Word, because their feeble minds cannot see through the purposes of God. . . . All the mistakes will not cause trouble to one soul, or cause any feet to stumble, that would not manufacture difficulties from the plainest revealed truth.

“God committed the preparation of His divinely inspired Word to finite men. This Word, arranged into books, the Old and New Testaments, is the guidebook to the inhabitants of a fallen world, bequeathed to them that, by studying and obeying the directions, not one soul would lose its way to heaven” Selected Messages book 1, 16.

Jesus summarized this principle best when He said that “man shall . . . live . . . by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” Matthew 4: 4. God does not want us to have a refined, malnourished spiritual diet. Every word of the inspired account is important for total spiritual health.

Second Rule of Study

2. We must be humble and teachable. Jesus said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes” Matthew 11: 25.

We should remember, however, that the Bible was written by common people (filled with the Holy Spirit) for common people. It was not written in a sloppy way. God chose intelligent people to write the Bible and they weighed and considered every word that they used. But, nevertheless, they used the language and expressions of the common society around them. Paul said, “And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. . . . And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” 1 Corinthians 2: 1– 5.

For this reason, it is more difficult for the educated person who trusts in his intelligence and who seeks to study the Bible as he would some technical scientific book, to understand the Bible, than it is for the common, humble person who sincerely and prayerfully dedicates himself to the understanding of the Scriptures. It is an interesting fact that most of the errors of theology, which have been many, have originated and been handed down through those who have a degree in theological study. Throughout history, theological study has more generally led away from the true understanding of the Word than helped in its understanding. Thus it was in the days of Jesus with the priestly scholars. Thus it was in the Dark Ages, and thus it is today.

“The Bible was not written for the scholar alone; on the contrary, it was designed for the common people” Steps to Christ, 89. We are to be careful and systematic Bible scholars, but it is only as we become humble in thought and teachable in spirit that we can truly understand the Word.

Third Rule of Study

3. We must compare scripture with scripture, letting the Bible explain itself. God asks the question of Himself: “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?” He answers that He will teach those “weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.” In other words, those who are spiritually mature. And what does it mean to be spiritually mature? God answers that question in the next verse: “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” Isaiah 28: 9, 10.

Too many people find a passage from the Bible and begin to build a whole theology upon one statement. But in any language, words and sentences can be understood in many different ways, so who is going to be the interpreter of the Word: The scholar? The preacher? The Pope? The one who can articulate his ideas the best? No, the Bible must be the one that interprets itself. This is done by studying everything the Bible says on a given subject to make sure that we are not falsely interpreting it.

There are two great dangers in Christendom: Worldliness, on the one hand, and fanaticism on the other. Now, anyone can be called a fanatic, but true fanaticism is that which goes beyond God’s Word. If God says to keep one day a week holy, obedience does just what God says. Fanaticism says that if God says to keep one day, why not go beyond God’s request and keep two days, or every day, holy. Worldliness says it does not really matter; we do not need to keep any day holy, for God is not that particular.

If God says to keep a particular day holy, true obedience keeps the very day God said to keep. Worldliness says that any day will do, and fanaticism makes restrictions upon the day that God never intended.

God is looking for simple obedience from a heart of love. Should we try to work our way to heaven by going beyond God’s Word, it would be selfrighteousness and fanaticism. Should we decide that God is not important enough to be obeyed or does not mean what He says, and we do not need to be particular about His requirements, that would be disobedience and a lack of faith.

The true study of God’s Word protects us from sinful worldliness, as well as false conservativism and fanaticism. Fanaticism is especially prevented by comparing scripture with scripture to make sure we are not misinterpreting the Word.

Nearly every false religion and religious idea is based upon some passage of scripture that someone has interpreted to suit their own ideas, rather than allowing the Bible to interpret itself. If certain passages of the Bible do not harmonize with our thinking, we are misinterpreting the Word. We should study, struggle, and pray, crucifying our pride and preconceived ideas, until our understanding of the Scriptures is supported by every passage and statement of the Bible. If we have to argue away certain portions of the Bible because they do not agree with us, it is not the Scriptures that are wrong, but our ideas. We may be able to find a text to “prove” our point, but if another text disproves our theory, we are misinterpreting the first text.

Forth Rule of Study

4. We should always pray for the aid of the Holy Spirit before studying the Scriptures. “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery,” Paul said. “[ For] no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” 1 Corinthians 2: 7– 14.

It is impossible for us to understand the Bible in our own wisdom. That is why the scholar who is full of self- importance and champions his degrees before the world will never arrive at the true understanding of the Word. We must humble our hearts and ask the Holy Spirit to guide our minds.

“Never should the Bible be studied without prayer. Before opening its pages, we should ask for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit” Steps to Christ, 91. “Everyone must. . . search the Bible for himself upon his knees before God, with the humble, teachable heart of a child, if he would know what the Lord requires of him” Testimonies, vol. 5, 214.

Many have found that studying the Bible on their knees with prayer allows the Holy Spirit to guide them into a fuller understanding of the truth. After Bible study, we should ask the Lord to help us retain those thoughts we have learned and to obey its precepts.

Fifth Rule of Study

5. We must truly want to know the truth before we can know the truth. Remember, it is those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth who will be shielded from the delusions of Satan. 2 Thessalonians 2: 9– 11 says, “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie.”

We can pray all we want to, we can supposedly humble our hearts all we want to, and search the Scriptures all we want to, like the scribes and Pharisees did in the days of Jesus, but unless we really want to know what the truth is, we will never find it. But if we will sincerely and earnestly pray for this love of truth, God will give it to us.

Any time we want to find an argument against a truth of the Bible, God will let us find it. He does not want to “prove” something to us against our will. That is why it is very dangerous to try to find arguments against some truth the Holy Spirit has impressed upon our hearts from our study or hearing of the Word, because we will find the arguments we want every time— but we will still be lost! Of course, we are not to accept any teaching blindly. We are to study to find out whether what we have learned, or what we have heard, is actually what the Bible is teaching. The principle is that we must honestly search for the truth— not for an excuse not to believe the truth.

No one who has an argumentive spirit can be taught truth unless they are willing to humble themselves. Jesus said, “Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 18: 3.

We are to approach the Word of God in a totally different attitude than the way we approach the teachings of man. In studying the words and works of men, we should have a highly discriminating attitude, not being unwilling to learn, but being careful to see that what is being said is true according to the whole Word of God. God may have rich truths to share with us through some human instrumentality. We do not want to be found rejecting this truth, but we must approach the words and works of men in a different way than we approach God’s Word. When we hear a sermon in church, we should listen with a degree of reserve, not criticizing the human agent himself, but listening and studying to see whether what he is saying is based upon all Scripture. I do not want to base my salvation upon the integrity of any human being.

While we should gain all the benefit possible from sermons and religious material truly based upon the whole Word, we need to remember the warning of Jesus to “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees” Matthew 16: 11. The Pharisees and Sadducees were the preachers and religious leaders of the day, and the leaven represented their teaching (Matthew 16: 12). Millions of people will be lost because they listened to their preachers and teachers without carefully comparing their messages with the Bible.

But this attitude of reserve is just the opposite of the way we should approach the Bible. When we read the inspired Word of God, we let down our guard and open our minds to be instructed, completely and unreservedly. We must approach this Word as a little child. When the mother or father says to the little toddler, “Ball. Ball. This is a ball.” The little one tries to answer, “Ball.” He believes that the round object is a ball because his parents told him it was. He does not question the truthfulness of the parents at all, but believes them 100%. That is the way the truth is learned from the Bible. We believe it simply because God says it.

It is our own ideas and structured thought that we must question and hold in suspicion, not the Word of God. We must accept the teachings and sentiments of the Word of God without question. This is faith. God gives us ample evidence that He is true and trustworthy, and because of that, we believe what He says. The Bible says, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him” Hebrews 11: 6.

Sixth Rule of Study

6. We must search the Scriptures. Jeremiah 29: 13 says, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

Jesus likened the kingdom of heaven to “a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it” Matthew 13: 45, 46. We must search for truth. That is one of the requirements God has laid down in His Word for finding truth. We can have all the good intentions in the world, but if we never discipline ourselves to actually sit down and start searching, we will never arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

“Desires for goodness and holiness are right as far as they go; but if you stop here, they will avail nothing. Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Christians” Steps to Christ, 47, 48. Many people are planning and hoping to be saved, but they never come to the point of actually spending that time in the Word.

Seventh Rule of Study

7. We must live up to all the light we already have before God will teach us more. John 8: 31, 32 says, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

One time the disciples came to Jesus and asked Him why He taught in parables (Matthew 13: 10). “After all,” they might have reasoned, “these parables can be understood in different ways. Some can interpret them one way and others another way. Pretty soon there will be many different churches, ‘all teaching different things, and many different preachers, all preaching different things. So why do You not just teach the Word plainly, instead of giving parables?”

Jesus said, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given” Matthew 13:11. “I do not intend everyone to understand what I am saying,” was Jesus’ response. The only ones who could understand what Jesus was saying were those living up to all the light they already had. They could understand. “For whoever has [is living up to the light he has], to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have [is not living up to the light he has], even what he has will be taken away from him” Matthew 13:12.

Jesus is not trying to simply satisfy curiosity. If we are not living up to the truth we already know, there is no reason for God to reveal more truth to us, because however much more truth God could reveal to us, we would still be lost for not practicing what we already know.

I remember studying with a lady who was learning truth, step by step, from the Bible. One day she read something in the Bible she could not understand (or did not want to understand). Because she would not accept that point of truth, she soon became confused on every other point of Bible teaching that she had been learning.

I told her, if she truly did not understand one point of truth, to follow every point of truth she did understand. If she would follow what she did understand, God would also make plain what she did not understand. But she did not want to do that. If she could not understand every point, she would not follow anything the Bible said! Of course, God could not lead her anymore until she once again lived up to the light she did know and understand.

God has never promised to take away every cause of doubt concerning truth. He will give us evidence upon which to believe, and if we will step out on the best evidence we have from the Bible, always searching for more and clearer light, God will lead us each step of the way.

The way to heaven is likened to a path, and the truth of the Bible is like a flashlight on a dark night. “We also have the prophetic word. . . .which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place” 2 Peter 1: 19. David says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” Psalm 119: 105. A flashlight only shines farther ahead as we walk in the light it already shines upon our pathway. If we stand on a path on a dark night with a flashlight in our hand, refusing to go forward until we can see farther than what the flashlight is illuminating, we will never go forward. The batteries, in fact, will get weaker, until the light goes out entirely. But if we will walk forward on the part of the path that is revealed, the light will also shine farther ahead on our pathway, until we safely arrive at our destination. Thus it is with the Bible.

I have determined to study no further than what I can practice or faster than what I can change. When I find something in God’s Word that tells me about things I am not doing or condemns what I am doing, I want to first compare scripture with scripture to make sure that I understand what it is really saying. Then I must put it into practice. At that point, after deciding to change my life to conform to God’s Word, I am ready for the next passage or verse. There is no reason to read one more verse other than the one that is pointing out my sin, until I put that first verse into practice.

Yet God does not intend for us to remain on a particular verse or passage forever. He intends us to simply put into practice what we learn, and then to keep on learning and practicing. If we simply read and read, as though we were reading a newspaper, without making any changes in our life, we are worse off after reading than we were before! Jesus talked about two groups of hearers of the Word— those who hear the Bible and do what it says, whom He likened to those who build their house upon a rock; and those who hear but do not obey, whom He likened to those who build their house upon the sand (Matthew 7: 24— 27).

It is a great privilege to know the truth. It took the death of God’s dear Son in order for us to have it. But, with the privilege comes responsibility. If we learn the truth and do not practice it, we are worse off than if we had never heard the truth; but that is no reason not to learn the truth, for we are lost then, too. When we learn the truth and do not practice it, our hearts become hardened and we become hopelessly deceived, as were the religious people in the days of Jesus. James said to be “doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” James 1: 22.

Memorization

There is one more principle of studying the Bible, and that is to commit to memory as much of it as possible. David said, “Your word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You” Psalm 119: 11. When we are tempted, we may not have time to use the concordance in order to find a verse to help us overcome the temptation. We need the Word in our minds.

I have found that as I have spent time in meditating on and memorizing the Word, God reveals more and more of its meaning to me. By just memorizing a few verses a day I have been able to commit many books of both the Old and New Testaments to memory.

“Keep your Bible with you. As you have the opportunity, read it; fix the texts in your memory. Even while you are walking the streets you may read a passage and meditate upon it, thus fixing it in the mind” Steps to Christ, 90.

I try to get some exercise several times a week. During this time I do two things— I exercise the muscles and I memorize Scripture. I photocopy portions of the Bible so that as I am running or taking a brisk walk I can carry this in my hand and look down now and then to memorize a new verse. When I am working in the garden I can look at a text now and then and then repeat it to myself until it is etched into my memory. If the weather is inclement and I am riding our exercise bicycle, I put the paper on the reading stand in front of me. If a person memorized just one verse a day and then repeated those he had memorized over the last several days, he could memorize the whole New Testament in just a little over ten years! Certainly, therefore, many who have been Christians for over ten years, should have thus memorized the equivalent of the New Testament!

I find memorizing a very slow process. Some people can memorize quickly, but I have to repeat things many times before I remember them, and then I have to go over the same text day after day before it stays in my memory. Yet, though I do not memorize quickly, I find that if I do it consistently, over the years much can be learned.

At Steps to Life we try to encourage people in their memorization of the Bible by sending out monthly “Memory Gem” cards with Bible texts on them. Housewives put them on the window above their kitchen sink or on the wall beside the ironing board. The working person puts it on the dashboard of his car so he can memorize it while he is driving to work— when he comes to a stoplight he can look over the verse again and then repeat it as he is driving down the road. Mechanics put them on their tool boxes; school children paste them to their desks. Farmers paste them on the dash of their tractors. If you would like to start receiving the free monthly Memory Gem, just write to Steps to Life and let us know where to send it.

If we will but use the fragments of time that are passing into eternity, unused and wasted, we will be able to memorize large portions of the Bible. As I have ridden in subways and planes, waited in offices and seen factory workers after completing their lunch waiting for the work whistle to sound, I have seen people just sitting, staring into space, wasting time that they will never have again. Thus the moments tick away into eternity, unused and unaccounted for. If, when a person is sitting and waiting for someone to make an appointment, he can pull out a Memory Gem card and repeat the verses written on it, thus using his time profitably, the Lord will bless. There is nothing more fertile for Satan’s temptations than an empty mind and wasted hours.

It is best to begin memorizing as a child. We started teaching our children memory texts as soon as they could talk. Parents have told me how even their two year old, who could hardly talk, had learned certain passages of the Bible. Every child should learn the Ten Commandments, Psalm 23, the Beatitudes, and 1 Corinthians 13.

Which version of the Bible?

Now the question comes, what version should I read? This is a subject that can cause a lot of discussion, and sometimes more heat than light. There are, however, some versions which seem to be better, even much better, than others.

To start with, there are two basic versions of the New Testament that have been handed down to us in the original Greek language. One is called the Received Text, and there are thousands of remnants of these Greek manuscripts. The other version is the Egyptian Text. This latter version is also called the Alexandrian Text, as that was the city in Egypt from which these manuscripts came. There are not very many of the Egyptian texts, compared to the Received texts, but they are much older. The two most prominent Egyptian manuscripts are the Vaticanus and the Sinaiticus. These texts are quite different from the Received texts. The Received texts are nearly 100% consistent, but in the few texts that originated in Egypt we found many differences and omissions, not only as compared to the Received texts, but even between themselves.

The King James Version is based upon the Received Text. Many conservative Bible scholars believe that this is the text that came from the original writings of the apostles, and that portions of the Egyptian Text were changed by the Christian leaders there, such as Clement and Origen. Egypt was one of the first places to start mixing Christianity with pagan philosophies. These leading Christian scholars of Egypt, though calling themselves Christian, did not agree with the teachings of the New Testament in every detail. They began the process that came to be called the “Hellenization” of Christianity. That means they tried to bring the pagan ideas of Greece into Christianity. They, for example, along with the Christians in Rome, began to keep a different day of worship than the one Jesus kept. They began to keep the day the Greeks had kept in. honor of their sun god.

Most of the Received texts are from Syria. Since Egypt is much drier than Syria, the Egyptian texts have survived much longer than the older Received texts. Some have also surmised that the Egyptian texts were so inferior that they were not used much, whereas the Received texts became worn out with use. When one manuscript wore out, it was faithfully copied to a new manuscript and the old one was destroyed by fire.

Though the Received texts that have survived are not as old as the Egyptian texts, it is of interest to note that the Bible quotations found in the early church fathers (leaders of the Christian church in the first few centuries after the Bible was written) generally agreed with the wording of the Received Text, showing that this version of the Greek New Testament is as old as the one from Egypt. The Latin Vulgate, as well as Catholic Bibles, are based upon texts similar to the Egyptian texts. That has been one of the differences between the Catholic Bibles and the Protestant Bibles. The King James Bible was based upon the Received Text.

The Received texts were the accepted New Testament manuscripts for all Protestants until the later half of the 19th century when two Oxford scholars by the names of Westcott and Hort began attacking the Received Text. They claimed that the Egyptian texts, being older, were more accurate than the Received texts. They said that though the Egyptian texts had many mistakes, it was because the disciples were not very well educated and the omissions and various things found in these Egyptian texts were probably as the disciples wrote them. They hypothesized that someone must have come along and smoothed the texts up, and that “smoothed- up” text then became the Received Text. Their biggest proof was that the Egyptian texts were older than the Received texts. They never produced the proof of their hypothesis, but it was believed by many scholars. Westcott and Hort made such an impression upon the academic community that most new English versions of the Bible since that time have used the Egyptian Text as the basis for the New Testament rather than the Received Text. There is no such thing as an “original” New Testament, but I agree with the early church fathers in their use of the Received Text. This was the text that most early Christians used, as is evident by its prevalence. One new version that uses the Received Text is the New King James Version.

The translation process A second item that makes for a good version, versus one that is not as good, is the method of translation. Some versions try to stick very closely to the original while others take great liberties in changing the structure and order of the thought content when translating to another language. The King James was a fairly literal translation. Some of the newer versions, such as the New International Version, have beautiful flowing English, but one of the reasons for that is that they have made English more important than a strict rendition of the text.

There are roughly three categories of translations:

First, the fairly literal translations, such as the King James Version, the New King James Version, the New American Standard Bible, and the Revised Standard Version. Second, the translations that took quite a few liberties with the wording of the original, such as the New International Version, Today’s English Version, and the New English Bible. And third, those Bibles that are acknowledged paraphrases that simply rewrote the Bible in modern English, such as the Living Bible. The New International Version takes many liberties in translating the original into English, both in sentence structure and the translation of words. Of the above versions, only the King James and the New King James are based upon the Received Text.

Over the years I have read several modern versions through, usually comparing them with the original Greek and Hebrew, and have always gone back to the King James Version as being my favorite because of the accuracy. I have recently learned to enjoy the New King James Version also. There are still some areas where the King James is superior to the New King James, but surprisingly enough, there are also some important texts which the New King James translates much more literally and accurately than the King James. For those who are interested in comparing these two versions, see the appendix. I have found these two versions the most accurate of all the versions I have compared.

The truth can always be found

Even with the most literal and best versions, there are still a few mistakes. There is no certainty that there are not mistakes even in the Greek manuscripts used to translate from. One author says that “God.., especially guarded the Bible; yet when copies of it were few, learned men had in some instances changed the words, thinking that they were making it more plain, when in reality they were mystifying that which was plain, by causing it to lean to their established views, which were governed by tradition” Early Writings, 220, 221.

Although some may point out flaws, in the best versions and manuscripts these flaws are really very few— God has kept His hand over His word and has not allowed any discrepancies to come in that would cause the honest in heart to be lost. God has promised that if we will compare scripture with scripture, humbly asking for divine guidance, He will guide us into truth. We may have to search for it as for a hidden treasure, but the search is worth the effort. His promise is, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” Jeremiah 29: 13.

Choose the best version. But more important than the version you choose, is the fact that you do read.

What are your priorities?

We must each know the truth for ourselves. We must take advantage of the blessings the Lord has given to us. During the Middle Ages, millions of faithful Christians, such as the Waldenses, gave their lives in order to preserve the Word for our salvation. During those dark days, the Bible was outlawed and people were burned at the stake if found with a copy of it.

Today the Bible sits on nearly every Christian’s bookshelf— dusty and unopened. Satan is succeeding more today by simply keeping us busy, than he did during the Dark Ages when the Bible was outlawed!

If a person spends three or four hours a day with television, he is considered normal. If he spends an hour a day with the newspaper, he is considered informed. If he spends several hours a day studying for a law or medical degree, he is considered educated. If, however, he spends even an hour a day studying the Word of God in preparation for eternity, he is considered odd or peculiar. How strange! Jesus said: “For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Matthew 16: 26.

It is by beholding that we become changed. Some have estimated that the average teenager in America has seen 15,000 murders on television, in addition to rapes, lying, cheating, violence and every other kind of evil, by the time he enters high school. If some school teacher should assign a student to watch 15,000 people being murdered, every parent in the land would be appalled, but that is how much the parents themselves have allowed their children to see, hour by hour, day by day. People have devoted their time to the things of this earth and then they wonder why their minds are so polluted with evil and why the things of eternity hold so little interest. The true Christian must become as devoted to the Word of God as the worldling is to television, for it is by beholding that we become changed. What we let our minds feed upon is what our characters will become like. I am convinced that anyone who is spending more time with television or the printed word from the world than they are with God’s Word, is going to gradually become more like the world than like God. In fact, if we are reading and watching fiction, short stories and novels, which is the basis of the movie industry, we will not be able to appreciate the Bible.

Wise counsel from an old journal

The following was written before the age of television and videos, but its counsel equally applies to these mediums of communication also (hence the brackets). I am sharing this article with you because of the profound impression it made on my mind when I was young. It was partially because of this article I chose not to watch movies and serials on television— I didn’t’t want my mind affected by them:

“The powers of endurance, and the strength and activity of the brain, are lessened or increased by the way in which they are employed. The mind should be so disciplined that all its powers will be symmetrically developed.

“Many youth are eager for books. They desire to read everything that they can obtain. Let them take heed what they read as well as what they hear. . . .They are in the greatest danger of being corrupted by improper reading [and television viewing]. Satan has a thousand ways of unsettling the minds of youth. They can not safely be off guard for a moment. They must set a watch upon their minds, that they may not be allured by the enemy’s temptations.

“Satan knows that to a great degree the mind is affected by that upon which it feeds. He is seeking to lead both the youth and those of mature age to read story- books, tales, and other literature [or to view such drama]. The readers of such literature become unfitted for the duties lying before them. They live an unreal life, and have no desire to search the Scriptures, to feed upon the heavenly manna. The mind that needs strengthening is enfeebled, and loses its power to study the great truths that relate to the mission and work of Christ,— truths that would fortify the mind, awaken the imagination, and kindle a strong, earnest desire to overcome as Christ overcame.

“Could a large share of the books published [and movies produced] be consumed, a plague would be stayed that is doing a fearful work upon mind and heart. Love stories, frivolous and exciting tales, and even that class of books [and movies] called religious novels,— books in which the author attaches to his story a moral lesson,— are a curse to the readers. Religious sentiments may be woven all through a storybook, but, in most cases, Satan is but clothed in angel- robes, the more effectively to deceive and allure. None are so confirmed in right principles, none so secure from temptation, that they are safe in reading these stories.

“The readers [and viewers] of fiction are indulging an evil that destroys spirituality, eclipsing the beauty of the sacred page. It creates an unhealthy excitement, fevers the imagination, unfits the mind for usefulness, weans the soul from prayer, and disqualifies it for any spiritual exercise.

“God has endowed many of our youth with superior capabilities; but too often they have enervated their powers, confused and enfeebled their minds, so that for years they have made no growth in grace or in a knowledge of the reasons of our faith, because of their unwise choice of reading. Those who are looking for the Lord soon to come, looking for that wondrous change, when ‘this corruptible shall put on incorruption, ‘ should in this probationary time be standing upon a higher plane of action.

“My dear young friends, question your own experience as to the influence of exciting stories. Can you, after such reading [or television viewing], open the Bible and read with interest the words of life? Do you not find the Book of God uninteresting? The charm of that love story is upon the mind, destroying its healthy tone, and making it impossible for you to fix the attention upon the important, solemn truths that concern your eternal welfare.

“The nature of one’s religious experience is revealed by the character of the books he chooses to read [and movies or pictures he chooses to view] in his leisure moments. In order to have a healthy tone of mind and sound religious principles, the youth must live in communion with God through his word. Pointing out the way of salvation through Christ, the Bible is our guide to a higher, better life. It contains the most interesting and the most instructive history and biography that were ever written. Those whose imagination has not become perverted by the reading of fiction will find the Bible the most interesting of books.

“Resolutely discard all trashy reading [and television viewing]. It will not strengthen your spirituality, but will introduce into the mind sentiments that pervert the imagination, causing you to think less of Jesus and to dwell less upon his precious lessons. Keep the mind free from everything that would lead it in a wrong direction.

Do not encumber it with trashy stories, which impart no strength to the mental powers. The thoughts are of the same character as the food provided for the mind.

“The Bible is the book of books. If you love the word of God, searching it as you have opportunity, that you may come into possession of its rich treasures, and be thoroughly furnished unto all good works, then you may be assured that Jesus is drawing you to himself. But to read the Scripture in a casual way, without seeking to comprehend Christ’s lesson that you may comply with his requirements, is not enough. There are treasures in the word of God that can be discovered only by sinking the shaft deep into the mine of truth.

“The carnal mind rejects the truth; but the soul that is converted undergoes a marvelous change. The book that before was unattractive because it revealed truths which testified against the sinner, now becomes the food of the soul, the joy and consolation of the life. The Sun of righteousness illuminates the sacred pages, and the Holy Spirit speaks through them to the soul. To those who love Christ the Bible is as the garden of God. Its promises are as grateful to the heart as the fragrance of flowers is to the senses.

“Let all who have cultivated a love for light reading, now turn their attention to the sure word of prophecy. Take your Bibles, and begin to study with fresh interest the sacred records of the Old and New Testaments. The oftener and more diligently you study the Bible, the more beautiful will it appear, and the less relish you will have for light reading. Bind this precious volume to your hearts. It will be to you a friend and guide” The Youth‘ s Instructor, 10/ 9/ 02.

No short cuts

Thus fiction, short stories, novels and movies will destroy one’s interest for the Bible. Cannot most people vouch for the truth of this principle? That is why the Bible says: “Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy— meditate on these things” Philippians 4: 8.

Though the movie industry does not meet this divine standard, we can learn something from those watching the movies— if a person buys a movie video that is an hour long, he sits for the full hour to watch the movie. He does not put the player on fast forward and say, “I finished that movie in ten minutes— I have done my duty for the day!”

So it is with the Bible. What we need to do is to set aside time for the Bible, like the person does who watches a movie. People will spend two, three or four hours a day watching television. Some surveys say the average person watches five hours of television a day! But if someone reads even an hour a day from the Bible, they think they have made some great accomplishment. I have found that an hour a day is the minimum amount of time that needs to be spent with the Bible.

As with eating, there needs to be a set time and place for daily Bible study. It should be when the mind is fresh and it should be a part of the daily routine of life. In the evening, a person needs to plan to get to sleep early enough so that he can get up with a fresh mind to start the day with Bible study and prayer. But do not simply roll over in bed and start reading. Our first thought of the day should be thanksgiving for a loving and benevolent God, and we should begin the day by kneeling and thanking the Lord for His goodness and committing our day to Him.

Then we need to get up! Make sure you are wide awake. You might drink some water and step outside for some deep breaths of fresh air so that your mind will be clear and fresh. Then sit down at a desk or in a chair with your Bible and concordance, for some serious study.

I have found that a season of prayer must precede the hour of Bible study in order to get the most out of the Bible. “Never should the Bible be studied without prayer. Before opening its pages we should ask for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, and it will be given” Steps to Christ, 91. A half- hour of prayer, followed by an hour of Bible study, is a profitable system.

How can anyone not read?

The other day I was visiting the Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum with my son. There were cowboys and cowgirls of every description, education and background. When we were done I asked my son what they all had in common. He could not think of a thing, so I finally told him: “They are all dead!”

All the great people of history who have ever lived on planet earth have died. It is only us who are still alive, but the end is coming for us also. Furthermore, from reading the Bible many people believe that Jesus is coming again very soon. So whether Jesus comes, or whether we die, life as we have known it is soon to end. Then what?

Have you really investigated the future from a reliable source? The only reliable source in the world on this score is the Bible. It not only tells you about the future, but how to prepare for the it. Just leaving your future to chance means that you have chosen to be lost.

Jesus said: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” John 3: 3. Again He says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” John 3: 16.

That is the invitation God holds for you today. It is more important than anything else in this life. “For all that is in the world— the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—. . . is passing away . . . but he who does the will of God abides forever” 1 John 2: 16, 17.

God is inviting you to become better acquainted with Him— today-— through the consistent study of His Word. He invites you because He loves you. Why not accept His invitation? It could mean the difference forever!

Appendix

The KJV and the NKJV

I have tried many versions over the years, but found none as reliable as the King James Version. Furthermore, all the newer versions used the Egyptian Text, which I was not comfortable with. There was only one drawback to the KJV and that was the outdated English, but that was a minor inconvenience compared to the reliability of the text.

But with daily memorization, I found my mind adapting to the KJV in certain areas of grammar that are no longer correct, such as ‘‘ an” rather than ‘‘ a” before words beginning with “h.” Therefore, when memorizing, I began to correct its archaic usages, changing comes

for cometh, and a house for an house, etc. When the New King James Version came out, I looked forward to an update of the KJV— the same Bible with modern English.

It was not quite what I expected. It was a whole new version, rather than simply a grammatical correction, but it was called the “New King James” because they used the same manuscripts and principles of translation as the KJV and tried to change the text as little as possible from the KJV. It was a major work that took many years. Each translator signed a document that he believed in verbal inspiration. They, therefore, tried to stick to the literal rendition of the text.

I found some areas in the NKJV that I felt were not as clear or accurate as the KJV, but I found some I felt were better. Some people have used the KJV as the standard of comparison for the NKJV. No version will ever be as good as another if the other is used as the standard, but if the Greek is used as the standard, they compare favorably. I have found both to be reliable, honest translations from what I consider the best manuscripts. I have found memorization faster from the modern English of the NKJV, and evangelism more effective. Therefore, I now use both.

The NKJV and the KJV are the only versions that italicize supplied words that are not in the original. Every translation must supply some implied words, but only these two versions tell you which words they are. The NKJV is the only version translated from the Received Text that puts the alternate readings for the Egyptian Text in the margin. Thus, if someone else is using another modem version, you will know what their Bible says. Like other new versions, the NKJV uses quotation marks and gives the references for Old Testament quotes found in the New Testament. I also like the way it puts Hebrew prose into poetic form.

Here are some of the differences between the KJV and the NKJV that have concerned people:

Hebrews 9: 12: “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us” (KJV).

After Jesus’ death, He entered the heavenly sanctuary, which, like its earthly pattern (Hebrews 8: 1- 5), has two parts— the first apartment and the second (Hebrews 9: 1- 5). Many Bible students, including myself, understand prophecy to teach that Jesus began His work in the first apartment (sometimes called the Holy Place) until He began His work of investigative judgment preparatory to His second coming (Daniel 7: 9, 10; Rev. 14: 6, 7).

The NKJV, however, says that Jesus entered the “Most Holy Place,” which would seem to indicate the second apartment of the sanctuary.

However, Hebrews 9: 11, 12, in context, is not talking about the two apartments of the sanctuary at all, but about two sanctuaries— the old covenant sanctuary on earth versus the new covenant sanctuary in heaven where God’s throne is. The sanctuary on earth was holy, but Jesus entered the one in heaven which was even more holy.

Neither translation need cause a great concern if studied in context, but the KJV is thought by many to be less confusing because the NKJV inserts the word “Most.” Actually, the original here is ta Hagia, which means holy places (plural), so neither version in this case is 100% literal.

2 Peter 2: 9: “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished” (KJV).

The New King James translates this as “reserve the unjust under punishment.” The word in question here is from the Greek word eis, which means “to” or in.” The KJV is correct.

Jesus said: “The Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works” Matthew 16: 27 (NKJV). Here Jesus says that it is when He comes in glory, with His holy angels, that He will reward each according to his works. Jesus said: “For the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation” John 5: 28, 29 (NKJV).

The NKJV implies that the wicked are already being punished, whereas the more exact translation of the KJV implies that the wicked are awaiting punishment.

Psalm 16: 10: “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption” (KJV).

The Hebrew word here translated as “hell” is sheol, which literally means the “unseen state.” It was the common word for grave. The same is true for the New Testament word, hades. In nearly 30 places, the KJV incorrectly translates these words as “hell,” thus stating that people, including Jesus Himself, go directly to hell when they die. The NKJV leaves the original word: sheol, and hades, respectively. 2 Thessalonians 2: 7– 9: “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming” (NKJV).

Here Paul describes the Beast power that is to come upon the world. His main description, or mark, is that he is the “lawless one. “ “Lawless” is the exact translation of a very common Greek word, anomian. The KJV translated this word correctly in 1 John 3: 4, but for some reason uses a very generic, and incorrect translation both in 2 Thessalonians 2 and in Matthew 7: 21– 23, where it translates the word as “iniquity.” Iniquity is unspecific. The Beast power is not simply a “bad” power, but one which will seek to change God’s law (Daniel 7: 25). God’s followers are those who keep His law (Revelation 12: 17; 14: 12). The Beast’s followers are “lawless,” like the Beast himself (Matthew 7: 23).

I Corinthians 1: 18: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (NKJV).

The KJV translates this as “us which are saved.” The NKJV correctly translates the verb tense here as an on- going process, whereas the KJV translates it as something that has already happened. When you stop and think about it, there is a lot of difference between these two thoughts.

Maybe I have been influenced by the way my favorite book, The Desire of Ages, selectively uses various versions, but I have come to appreciate conservative modern versions, too. There is no perfect version. If a person looks only for flaws, he will find them in any version. Some versions, however, are better than others. If you will choose the best you can find, and then compare scripture with scripture, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, God has promised to lead you to truth. Remember, “no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation” 2 Peter 1: 20. We cannot put our own interpretation on any text— each text must be compared to all others.

So again, read the best version you can find. But do read! for it is God’s Word. That Word, hidden in our hearts, will give us power over sin.

Bible Facts on Hell

by Cody Francis

Bible Facts on HellThere may be no other subject in the Bible that has led to so much anxiety as the topic of hellfire. Many have been driven to despair and hopelessness contemplating a never ending torture chamber of fire. It can be hard for us to understand. How could a God of love torment sinners in hellfire forever? It does not seem consistent with His beneficent dealings with mankind. If the Bible tells us that this is indeed what a God of love does, we must accept it for the Bible is God’s inspired Word, but is this really what it says? What are the Bible facts on hell?

Hell is frequently thought of, and portrayed, as a blazing inferno manned by the devil himself. Is the devil really in charge of hell? Did God create the devil to be the overlord of hell? Is hell in the center of the earth, on some planet in the outer reaches of the universe, or somewhere else? Are there souls writhing in anguish there right now? What are the clear Bible facts on Hell?

Our God of Love

There is a fundamental truth that needs to be kept foremost in our minds with whatever it is that we may be studying. This is found in I John 4:8,16, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love…. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” John, dwelling upon his favorite theme, tells us unequivocally that God is love. God equals love. Everything that is true about love is true about God, for God is love. Everything that God has done, is doing or will do is because He loves us “with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).

A simple glance at His dealings with mankind is sufficient to show us that everything that He does is because He loves us. God created a perfect, beautiful world because He loves us and wants us to be happy. When man fell, God provided a ransom, an escape through His own Son, Jesus. He commanded an ark to be built so that in His love He could save the faithful and still slow down the increase of sin. He called Abraham to another country because of His love. He has given us the Bible to study from because in His love, He wants to communicate with us. He has given us the Law of love, knowing that if we keep it we will be happier. He has sent Jesus to die for us and take our place that we might be reconciled to Him. Jesus has promised that He is coming back because He loves us and wants us to be with Him. Yes, there is no doubt that absolutely everything God does is because of His great love and mercy for us. In the 136th Psalm this is reiterated again and again. In each of the twenty-six verses is repeated, “for His mercy endureth for ever.” In all of God’s dealings with man, His love and mercy are exemplified. This is also true with the subject of hell. God’s love must clearly be seen in the punishment of the wicked, or else it would not be true that God is indeed a God of love.

It is possible, though, to take this to an extreme. There are some that have told me that since God is love, He will not punish the wicked, that God’s love would not do such a thing. This stems from a false belief of what true love is. God’s love is not the false sentimental feeling that is in the world today, but God’s love is a firm principle. Even though God is a God of love, He is also just. “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” Psalms 97:2. “For all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4. Justice is the foundation of His throne and there is no injustice in Him. God still must be just even though He is a God of love. It is only through Jesus’ sacrifice that He can be, “just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” Romans 3:26. Justification comes only to the one who has faith in Jesus, and for those who refuse to fully accept and believe on Jesus, God can do no more. He has given all heaven in the gift of His Son, and if we are unwilling to follow Him, the only thing that can remain is, “a certain fearful expectation of judgment.” Hebrews 10:27. “The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.” Numbers 14:18. The Lord is unquestionably longsuffering, merciful, full of love. Although He is all of these things, it is impossible for Him to forgive the unrepentant guilty. It would be inconsistent with the principles of His throne and government. He bears long with the children of men, calling them to repentance, but once His limit of love is reached, there is no other option but to execute judgment. And how true it is, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” For He says, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” Hebrews 10:31, 30. There is no question about it, God is love, but His love will not excuse and pass over those who have rejected our Saviour.

Is Hell Going on Right Now?

Jesus himself gives us the answer, “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:… Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:… And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46. Jesus is showing the separation that will occur at the Second Coming, and in so doing He answers very plainly that hell is not going on right now. It is not until He comes in His glory and sits on the throne of His glory that the righteous are rewarded and the wicked are punished. This obviously cannot be now, for He is on the throne of grace now. (See Hebrews 4:14-16).

At present no one is suffering from the flames of this fire. “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own habitation, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;” Jude 6. “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.” II Peter 2:9 KJV. “But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” II Pet. 3:7. Obviously from these verses none have been punished, not even the fallen angels are being punished right now. The fallen angels, the unjust, and the ungodly are all being reserved until the day of judgment and perdition.

All upon this earth who have died, are now sleeping in the graves until their respective resurrection. (For a detailed study on this subject see Steps to Life’s booklet, The Race to Contact the Dead.) Jesus said, “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth–those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.” John 5:28, 29. It is not until the resurrection of condemnation that the wicked come forward to receive their punishment. “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel 12:2. Those who awake at the first resurrection, the resurrection of life, will receive everlasting life, but those who awake at the second resurrection, the resurrection of condemnation, will receive shame and everlasting contempt. It only takes common sense to tell us that the wicked will not receive their punishment until this resurrection of condemnation, and since that has not happened yet, hell cannot be going on right now.

If hellfire were going on right now with the unrighteous souls soaring to a burning spirit world, this would be a mockery of God’s justice. Just think of the person who lived five thousand years ago. He was a very good person and all who knew him really loved him, but tragically there was just one little thing in his life that he loved more than God. He just could not seem to give up that one thing. God gave him chances, but still he clung to this cherished idol. For this one thing in his life, that he valued more than Heaven, he lost his soul. (One thing is enough to bar us from eternal life. Jesus said to the rich young ruler who went away sorrowful, “One thing you lack.” Mark 10:17-22.) If hell were going on now, and a person went directly to hell at death, he would be burning for thousands of years. Then along comes a man like Adolph Hitler, a man responsible for the death of millions of innocent people, at his death he went to hell as well. That would mean that the man who only lacked one thing would be burning for five thousand years longer than one of the wickedest men who has ever lived. Is that justice? Absolutely not! God in his justice and mercy has not set up hell like that. Hell is not, and cannot be, going on now, for the wicked are not rewarded until after the second resurrection.

This fits perfectly into God’s great plan of justice. We know from Scripture that, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” II Corinthians 5:10. There is not one exempted from this judgment. Would it be fair to punish someone before they were judged? Absolutely not! That would be one of the most unjust things that could ever happen, and so God has ordained that the wicked are not punished until after they are judged. (See Revelation 20:11-15) Since this judgment of the wicked is still to come [Acts 24:25] there is no way that the wicked could be experiencing the pains of hell right now. It is not until after the resurrection of the unjust [Acts 24:15] and the judgment that the wicked will be punished for their works.

Where is Hell?

“And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched, they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.” Isaiah 66:24. The very last verse in Isaiah tells us that the righteous will go and look upon the wicked. Hell then has to be some place where the righteous will be able to see burning. This means that it could not be in the center of the earth, for there are no fireproof elevators to take a person down to look upon hell, then bring them back up again.

The heavens and earth are now being preserved until that time. “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. II Peter 3:7. The present heaven and earth are what is being reserved until the judgment day when this earth is cleansed by the unquenchable fires. Isaiah saw the same thing happening. “For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance, the year of recompense for the cause of Zion. It streams shall be turned into pitch, and its dust into brimstone; its land shall become burning pitch.” Isaiah 34:8, 9. Even the very streams and dust became a conflagration. Everything on this old earth bursts into flames and becomes a lake of fire.

By putting all these verses together the only conclusion that we can come to is that the fires of hell will actually be right here on this old earth. “They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.” At the second resurrection, all of the wicked are raised, (verse 5) the devil deceives them to make a final desperate attack upon the holy city, (verses 7, 8) the final, great white throne judgment takes place, (vs. 11-13) and God ends the sin problem by raining down fire from heaven (verse 9, 14, 15). The shower of fire is so strong that the entire earth becomes a “lake of fire and brimstone.” (verse 10) During this time, the righteous are preserved safely in the Holy City, just as Noah and his family were saved inside the ark. It is here on the battleground of the great controversy that sin will eventually be done away with. God has not created a place in the outer reaches of the universe to be a holding tank for sin, He is going to destroy it right here at the center of the rebellion.

How Long will the Wicked Suffer?

An exact answer to this is not given in the Bible, but we do know that each one is going to suffer according to his works. “Who ‘will render to each one according to his deeds Romans 2:6. Since God is a fair and just God, it only makes sense that each person will be rewarded according to the amount of light that they have had, and the use that they have made of that light. Jesus told a parable that teaches us this same thing. “The master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself, or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.” Luke 12:46-48. All who have rejected light and done despite to the spirit of grace will be punished for the “wages of sin is death.” Romans 6:23. But there are those who are less guilty than others. In our justice system today there are degrees of punishment. The instigator of the crime receives a much heavier sentence than the one that reluctantly assisted. In God’s great judgment, all factors are likewise taken into consideration. There are some that have not had the opportunities and privileges that others have had. God will not require as much from them. In Jesus own words, “It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.” Matthew 11:24. Jesus did not say that Sodom would be acquitted of all its great wickedness. All that have continued to break God’s Holy Law will have a fearful account to render and in the end will receive the due punishment. But he did say that it was going to be better for Sodom than for the cities where a large portion of His ministry had been spent. Capernaum had the “light of the world” in their midst walking and working miracles among them, but still they refused to repent. Their privileges were much higher than Sodom’s and still they continued on the path of destruction. There is no doubt their punishment will be much more severe, for much was given to them, but they did not appreciate and accept the greater light. All who have turned their backs upon divine mercy will suffer the vengeance of hellfire, but some are going to suffer longer than others, and no doubt the devil will burn the longest of all.

The Example of Eternal Fire

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels&’ And these will go away into everlasting judgment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:41, 46. Clearly the unrighteous will receive their punishment of everlasting fire. The Bible repeatedly describes hell using such terms as everlasting fire, unquenchable fire, forever and ever, etc. This has led many to conclude that hellfire will go on for the ceaseless ages of eternity, that the wicked will constantly be writhing in pain for billions and billions of years. It is true that at first glance the terms used to describe hell can appear to mean this, but we must go deeper than just the surface to find the true meaning of God’s Word.

In the Bible, we are given an example of what hell will be like. “As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” Jude 7. God has frequently taught us what future events will be like by giving an example which occurred during the old covenant. Hellfire is just one example of this. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis, is not just an historical story, but an example of what will be in the future as well. We are told that Sodom and Gomorrah are set forth as an example of eternal fire. The story is a familiar one; because of the great wickedness of the cities in the plain, God “rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens.” Genesis 19:24. We are told that this was “eternal fire,” but are Sodom and Gomorrah still burning today? Of course not Everyone knows that the fires of Sodom and Gomorrah have gone out years ago. You cannot visit a site in the Middle East and have the tour guide tell you that it is the eternally burning fires of Sodom and Gomorrah. We don’t know exactly how long the fires burnt, but we do know that they finally went out. How then could it be eternal fire? The results were eternal. Never again have the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah been rebuilt. It was an eternally consuming fire. It consumed every last object and then, when there was nothing more to burn, the fires went out. “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making then an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;” II Peter 2:6. Peter adds the detail that Sodom and Gomorrah were turned into ashes. Ashes according the Webster’s New World Dictionary is defined as, “the substance remaining after a thing has been burned.” Ashes do not burn. Ashes are what is leftover after something has already been burned. It can clearly be seen from the Bible that Sodom and Gomorrah are not still burning, but that “God destroyed the cities of the plain.” Genesis 19:29. Since Sodom and Gomorrah are an example of eternal fire, we can know that the eternal fires of hellfire will, likewise, not continue for the billions of years of eternity.

The Devouring Fire

All through out the Bible hellfire is described as a consuming, devouring fire. “You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger; The Lord shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them.” Psalms 21:9. “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.” Psalms 50:3. “A fire goes before Him, and burns up His enemies round about.” Psalms 97:3 “But a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” Hebrews 10:27. “They went up on the breadth of the earth and surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.” Revelation 20:9. The fire and judgment that burns the wicked is described as a devouring, consuming fire that burns up the wicked. If something is devoured, it obviously isn’t burning for ages. If something is consumed and burned up, it will not continue to burn, and this is actually the purpose of fire, to burn and devour what it is consuming. (See Judges 9:15, 20; Isaiah 9:18; 10:17; 33:11; Hosea 8:14; Amos 1:4, 7, 10, 12, 14; 2:2, 5; 5:6; Nahum 3:13; Zechariah 11:1: 2:6.) And thus, as with Sodom and Gomorrah, hellfire will consume and devour all that is to be consumed, and then it will go out.

“For our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29. The Lord whom we serve is described as a consuming fire. Sin is going to be consumed from His presence. He is holy and only holy beings can stand before Him. [Hebrews 12:14] We are either going to allow Him to consume the sin from our lives now, or if we cling to sin, we are going to be consumed by the fires of the last days.

The Punishment Everlasting

“And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but he righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:46. Jesus said that the devil, his angels and the wicked were going to experience punishment. Notice it didn’t say everlasting punishing; it says everlasting punishment. There is a difference. Everlasting punishing would be punishing that goes on and on, while everlasting punishment is punishment that does not last forever. That is, the results of the punishment are everlasting, not necessarily the punishing itself. Paul gives us more explanation on the subject. “In flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.” II Thessalonians 1:8, 9. The punishment of destruction is what is everlasting, not the punishing of fire. The fire does its work and brings the result of everlasting destruction.

Unquenchable Fire

Immediately there are verses that come to our mind that make us wonder about what we have just started to discover. Doesn’t the Bible say that it will be unquenchable fire, and if the fire is unquenchable how could it devour and go out as Sodom and Gomorrah did? Yes, the Bible does say “fire that shall never be quenched,” Mark 9:43, but once again, what does that mean?

Again there is an example as to what unquenchable fire is. “But if you will not heed Me to hallow the Sabbath day, such as not carrying a burden when entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched. Jeremiah 17:27. The Lord had threatened Jerusalem, that if they refused to hallow the Sabbath, God’s holy day, God’s judgments would be poured upon it. The judgment threatened was that it would be burned with fire that was not going to be quenched. Once again that is the same wording as used to describe hell. [Isaiah 66:24; Mark 9:42-48]. Tragically, Jerusalem did continue to disregard the Sabbath and the rest of God’s Law and it was burnt with fire. “But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy….Then they burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious possessions.” II Chronicles 36:16, 19. Jerusalem was indeed burned with unquenchable fire when the Chaldeans destroyed the city and carried away the captives. Any geography or history student knows that Jerusalem is not still burning today. Just because it was called unquenchable fire does not mean that it was going to burn for billions upon billions of years. It simply meant that there was no one that would be able to quench, or put out the fire. It didn’t matter how hard the Jews or anyone tried, it was not going to be put out. You could have called all of the fire trucks and firemen in the world, but they would not have been able to put it out. God had decreed that it was going to be unquenchable fire–no one was going to be able to put it out, but once it had done its work and devoured, as fires always do, it was going to turn to ashes and go out.

Ezekiel talks about another fire that was not going to be quenched. “And say to the forest of the South, ‘Hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God: Behold I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree and every dry tree in you; the blazing flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be scorched by it. All flesh shall see that I, the Lord, have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.'” Ezekiel 20:47, 48. This prophecy given four or five years before Jerusalem was destroyed is probably referring to the forest of the South as the land of Judah. Once again it tells us that the fire will not be quenched, but it gives us more detail about unquenchable fire. He tells us that both the green and the dry trees are going to be devoured. Green trees do not usually burn very well, but not so in this fire. Everything was going to be consumed, whether it was normally combustible or not, it was all going to be devoured. The fire was going to be so consuming that all were going to know that the Lord was the one who had kindled it. So it shall be with the unquenchable fires of the last days. It will be known by all that it is the Lord’s doing and no one will be able to extinguish that fire. It will burn everything, whether it is normally combustible or not. It will do the work for which it was prepared–to devour. Once everything is devoured and there is nothing left to burn, though, it will go out, for there will be no more reason for it to continue.

Forever and Ever

“And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever, and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” Revelation 14:11. We must remember that we use figures of speech in our language today and that there are figures of speech in the Bible as well. If someone said, “he really got out of bed on the wrong side today,” we would know that he was in a bad mood, not that it literally mattered what side of the bed he got out on. If we said that it was raining cats and dogs, and then literally interpreted that into another language, it would greatly surprise our foreign friend; but we would know that it only meant that it was raining very, very hard. It is the same way with the terms “eternal fire,” “everlasting fire,” “forever and ever.” To the Hebrew mind it is simply a figure of speech, not to be taken absolutely literally, that there will never be an end to the fires. Forever, in the Bible, can mean as long as a person is alive. We can see this illustrated in a couple of Old Testament passages. “Then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.” Exodus 21:6. “But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, ‘I will not go up until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the Lord and remain there forever…. Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.’ So they worshiped the Lord there.” I Samuel 1:22, 28. We see two clear examples in which forever simply meant as long as the person lived. The slave obviously could not serve his master after he had died, but it was still said that he would serve him forever. Hannah said that Samuel would serve in the temple forever, but then again she says that he would serve the Lord as long as he lived. “Forever” in the Bible can simply be a figure of speech meaning as long as a person lives. We even use this in our language today. If we are on a long trip, we might say it took us forever to get there. Taking it in its context we know that it just means it took a long time. The same is true with the smoke ascending forever. When we compare scripture with scripture it does not mean that the smoke will endlessly be ascending, but that it will take a long time and it will continue as long as there is something for the fire to burn.

Immortal Soul?

Most of the pagan religions teach that the soul is immortal, and sadly enough this belief has crept into Christianity. The Bible teaches that God is the only one who has immortality. “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” “Which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.” I Timothy 1:17; 6:15,16. You can read every verse in the Bible and there is not one verse that intimates that the soul is immortal; it is only God who is immortal. Man does not receive the gift of immortality until the Second Coming and then it is only the righteous. (See I Corinthians 15:50-54.)

Instead of the Bible teaching an immortal soul, just the opposite is taught. “Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine; the soul who sins shall die…. The soul who sins shall die.” Ezekiel 18:4, 20. This is so plain and unequivocal that there should be no room for controversy. The soul is not immortal; it can die. The belief that the soul cannot die was actually the first lie that the devil told, “You will not surely die.” Genesis 3:4. God had said, “You shall surely die.” Genesis 2:17. But tragically, Eve believed the devil’s subtle lie instead of God’s plain statement, and many more have followed her today.

Not only can the soul die, but Jesus said that both the soul and the body were going to die in hell. “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28. Once again, there is no room for controversy, it is too plain. The soul does not burn in anguish for the ceaseless ages of eternity–it is destroyed. If something is destroyed, it does not continue to exist. God in His justice cannot let the wicked go unpunished, but God in His mercy and love is not going to punish the wicked for billions and billions of years. Both the soul and the body are destroyed.

It has been asserted that because Jesus said that the worm does not die, the soul will not die. “And if your hand makes you sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched–where their ‘worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.'” Mark 9:43, 44. Nowhere in the Bible is worm associated with the soul, and only in a few instances is it referred to as a human, and there only denoting the contempt that is placed upon that individual. Jesus is not contradicting Ezekiel or himself, but is emphasizing the importance of fully overcoming sin and if it is not overcome, hellfire will be the result. The word translated hell is actually “gehenna.” Gehenna refers to the “Valley of Hinnom,” not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah predicted that this valley would be a valley of slaughter where carcasses would be strewn. [Jeremiah 7:31-34]. According to rabbinical tradition it became a place for burning of refuse and carcasses. As Jesus spoke these words, perhaps the smoke was seen drifting to heaven. It brought a vivid picture to the minds of the listeners as they associated this valley of destruction with the punishment of those who continue in sin. If anything escaped the consuming fires, it was devoured by the worms and maggots. Jesus was not teaching that the fires would never go out, but rather giving his hearers a graphic description of the undesirability of hellfire.

The idea that the soul is immortal and that wicked souls will burn for ages and ages is, in reality, underplaying the gospel. The most famous of all verses tells us what we are saved from by believing in Jesus, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believed in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. By believing in, and following Jesus we are saved from perishing. An eternally burning hell is not perishing. If the damned are writhing in flames for eternity; they really have eternal life! Granted it is not a pleasant eternal life, but it is still eternal life none-the-less. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23. By accepting Jesus we receive eternal life. Eternal life is not something that we have unless we have truly accepted Jesus and are following Him. The wicked do not have eternal life, their lot is death. Is burning for billions of years on end death? Absolutely not The fires of hellfire consume all of the wicked and finally bring death and it is this death that is called, “the second death.” Revelation 20:14.

Ashes Under Your Feet

“‘For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble and the day which is coming shall burn them up.’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘That will leave them neither root nor branch….You shall trample the wicked for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet. On the day that I do this,’ says the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 4:1, 3. Malachi tells us of the coming day when the wicked will be no more. In this world wickedness can look like it gets the victory, but that will not always be. The day is coming when those who may have gained the whole world will be sorry, for they will see that they lost their own soul. [Mark 8:36]. They will be burnt as stubble and as stubble does not burn throughout eternity; it ignites, burns hot and goes out, so it shall be with the wicked. “Behold, they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame; it shall not be a coal to be warmed by, nor a fire to sit before!” Isaiah 47: 14. For those who have despised God’s grace the end will come. They shall be burnt up. It will be impossible to deliver themselves. The wisest, wealthiest man who has been found wanting will not escape. But after the fire has done its work, every coal will go out. There will not be a flame left. The fires of hell will go out. The wicked will be turned into ashes. No trace of the curse of sin will be left, both root and branch will be destroyed in the devouring flame. That is not saying that all of the wicked will be consumed in a matter of seconds. The wicked may burn for minutes, hours, days, months, perhaps even years. No one knows, but we do know that the fire will eventually turn everything into ashes and not a coal or flame shall be left.

Even the originator and promulgator of sin himself will be destroyed. Speaking of the devil, the Word says: “Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.” Ezekiel 28:18, 19 KJV. God’s Word declares that the fire will devour the devil and bring him to ashes and that he will never be any more. Praise God! The devil, that has wrecked havoc upon this world of ours, will ultimately be destroyed and will never be again. The one who has caused all the misery and sorrow that is in the world will have to suffer for all the pain that he has inflicted upon humanity, and then he will come to his end. If, after meting out the full punishment of the devil, God brings him to ashes, we can be assured that the fires will indeed go out. The punishment will be full and complete, but God will not, as a ruthless tyrant, torture his enemies for the endless years of eternity.

The Utter End

God has told us of a time when all evildoers shall be cut off. “But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off….When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it….The future of the wicked shall be cut off.” Psalms 37:28, 34, 38. All sin and sinners will be cut off. Evildoers may appear to triumph now, but it is only for a time. The future of all those who love the things of this world is to be cut off from it forever and the righteous shall see it when it happens. The wicked may taunt and jeer now, but their day is coming. They shall be cut off. Even if you try to search for them, you will not find them for they will be cut off forever. “I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a native green tree. Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.” Psalms 37: 35, 36. Why could he not be found? “But the wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the Lord, like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away.” Psalms 37:20. Into smoke the wicked will be consumed. “For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look diligently for his place, but it shall be no more.” Psalms 37:9,10. A time is coming when wickedness and sin will be no more. It will not find a place on this earth. The earth will be completely eradicated from the curse and plague of sin and evil.

One of the most wonderful of all promises found in God’s Word is Nahum 1:9, “What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.” God’s promise to us is that He will win the great controversy in which we are all players. Not only will He win the battle, but He will make an utter end. Sin and sinners will be no more. Every trace and remembrance of sin will be utterly destroyed and affliction or sin will not crop up its ugly head again. Once the battle is won, “it is done.” Revelation 21:6. The entire universe will be free from any stain or spot of sin. Sin and sinners will have been consumed by the fires of hell. Sinners “shall be as though they had never been.” [Obadiah 16]. They will have died the “second death” [Revelation 20:14] to which there is no resurrection. It will be as it was before they were born. (cf. Job 10:18, 19) They knew of nothing and knew nothing at all. There are no emotions, thoughts or feelings. It is simply an endless, unconscious sleep to which there is no awakening. The utter end is finally complete.

God recreates this world and wipes away all our sorrows and heartaches. “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away….And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:1, 4. This poor earth that has been defiled by sin for over six thousand years becomes a fiery inferno in which both sin and sinners are destroyed, and then God obliterates the remembrance of sin by creating a new heaven and a new earth upon the ashes of the wicked. Thus is fulfilled “for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet.” Malachi 4:3. The utter end is made and God becomes “all in all.” I Corinthians 15:28.

The reward of the righteous is far greater than what we can even begin to imagine. You will not hear one word of complaint or disappointment at the outcome for “eye has not seen nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” I Corinthians 2:9. Whatever you may have had to give up on this earth will be nothing in comparison to the glory of the hereafter. “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18. The worst possible mistake we could make would be to end up in the lake of fire. Will you make that choice to love Jesus enough to do whatever he asks so that you will be able to walk on that earth made new and have that eternal security that sin has met its utter end?
