Editorial – As We Draw Near the End

As we draw near the close of the age of grace, it becomes ever more important to live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, for it is only in this way can we be prepared for the crises that is so rapidly approaching. “You now have an opportunity to attain to the greatest intellectual power through the study of the Word of God. But if you are indolent, and fail to dig deep in the mines of truth, you will not be ready for the crisis that is soon to come upon us. O that you would realize that each moment is golden. If you live by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, you will not be found unprepared.” Our High Calling, 355

Secondly, there is no other avenue, or process, by which we are enabled to be overcomers. “Jesus endured the temptations of Satan in our behalf, that in His name we might come off more than conquerors. But we can overcome only by believing in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. We must know what is written in order that we may not be defeated by the sophistry and enchantments of Satan. The wily foe will work upon our minds in such a way that he will lead us to follow in the way he has gone, and cause us to dream of greatness, worldly honor, and distinction.” Signs of the Times, September 18, 1893

Thirdly, there is no other way to obtain success in our religious experience. “God prescribes the terms, and specifies every condition upon which we may receive His gifts. With the one party there is infinite power, wisdom, mercy, and goodness; with the other party is weakness, and ignorance, and helplessness and sin. Even the faculties and resources of men, which God will accept in cooperation with the divine, are ours only in trust. In the great condescension of God to admit human finite beings as co-laborers in the saving of the world, He makes it a condition that the human agent shall receive counsel from God, diligently obeying every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. And our success in the religious life will be according to the integrity and thoroughness with which these conditions are fulfilled.” 1888 Materials, 1103

Fourth. This is the only way to avoid being deceived. “There is no need of any soul being deceived. The teaching of priest and rabbi cannot make the word of God of no authority. It is the duty of each man to know what the Scriptures teach and to take his position in harmony with the truth. The Lord has commanded us to ‘search the Scriptures.’ We are instructed to ‘prove all things,’ to ‘hold fast that which is good.’ God has given us an unfailing test to apply to every man’s life and doctrine. Says the prophet, ‘To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them.’ We are not to live by the doctrines of men, not by a fragment, or a perversion of the truth; but by ‘every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.’” Signs of the Times, March 30, 1888

Fifth. There is safety in no other course. “How many are betrayed into sin, because they have not, through prayerful study of the Word of God, realized the sinfulness of sin, and found out how they may steadfastly resist it. When temptation comes upon them, they seem to be off guard, and ignorant of the devices of the enemy. We are living in perilous times, and as we draw near the close of earth’s history, there will be no safety for those who do not become familiar with the Word of God. I would warn the disciples of Christ of the impending days of peril, and beseech you to prepare for the time of test and trial; for everything that can be shaken, will be shaken. Do we now obey the Word of God, and live by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God?” Youth’s Instructor, May 18, 1893

Sixth. It is the only way to be saved. “To believe in Christ, we must come to Christ and follow Him. Repentance toward God means the confession and forsaking of all sin. It means the confession and forsaking of all sin. It means laying hold of Christ as a personal Saviour, and continuing to hold fast to Him as the chief good. He is our Prince, our Saviour. Only through Him can we approach the Father. Loving Him day by day and hour by hour, eating His flesh and drinking His blood, taking Him as the man of our counsel, living by every word that proceedeth out of His mouth,—only thus can we reach heaven.” Review and Herald, August 13, 1901

Only those who actually live by every word proceeding out of the mouth of God are acknowledged by the Spirit of Prophecy to be part of the church. “Those who keep God’s commandments, those who live not by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, compose the church of the living God.” Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 949

The church militant is marching onward toward the heavenly Canaan from faith to greater faith, from obedience to a more perfect obedience, from light to a brighter light.
If the Lord wills, next month we will look at the most dangerous religion in the world.

Bible Study Guides – King Asa

September 6, 2015 – September 12, 2015

Key Text

“Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.” II Chronicles 14:2.

Study Help: Prophets and Kings, 109–113.

Introduction

“Although his [Asa’s] forces were fewer in number than the enemy, his faith in the One Whom he had made his trust did not weaken.” Conflict and Courage, 203.

1 ASA’S FAITH TESTED

  • What does the Bible say about Asa, the grandson of Solomon? II Chronicles 14:2–5.
  • How did Asa reveal his faith during the test when the Ethiopians invaded Judah? II Chronicles 14:9–11. How was his faith rewarded? II Chronicles 14:12.

Note: “[II Chronicles 14:9 quoted.] In this crisis Asa did not put his trust in the ‘fenced cities in Judah’ that he had built, with ‘walls, and towers, gates, and bars,’ nor in the ‘mighty men of valor’ in his carefully trained army (II Chronicles 14:6–8.) The king’s trust was in Jehovah of hosts, in whose name marvelous deliverances had been wrought in behalf of Israel of old. …

“The prayer of Asa is one that every Christian believer may fittingly offer. We fight in a warfare, not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, and against spiritual wickedness in high places. (See Ephesians 6:12.) In life’s conflict we must meet evil agencies that have arrayed themselves against the right. Our hope is not in man, but in the living God. With full assurance of faith we may expect that He will unite His omnipotence with the efforts of human instrumentalities, for the glory of His name. Clad with the armor of His righteousness, we may gain the victory over every foe.” Prophets and Kings, 110, 111.

2 THE ONLY WAY TO SUCCESS

  • How did Azariah the prophet remind Asa of the source of his victory? II Chronicles 15:1, 2, 7.
  • What did Asa do to meet the needs that were necessary to further the reformation already in progress? II Chronicles 15:8.

Note: “[II Chronicles 15:1, 2, 7 quoted.] Greatly encouraged by these words, Asa soon led out in a second reformation in Judah.” Ibid., 112.

  • Comparing the days of Asa with our days, of what need should we be aware, and what should we heartily support? Isaiah 48:16–18.

Note: “In this age of the world, when Satan is seeking, through manifold agencies, to blind the eyes of men and women to the binding claims of the law of God, there is need of men who can cause many to ‘tremble at the commandment of our God’ (Ezra 10:3). There is need of true reformers, who will point transgressors to the great Lawgiver and teach them that ‘the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul’ (Psalm 19:7). There is need of men mighty in the Scriptures, men whose every word and act exalts the statutes of Jehovah, men who seek to strengthen faith. Teachers are needed, oh, so much, who will inspire hearts with reverence and love for the Scriptures.

“The widespread iniquity prevalent today may in a great degree be attributed to a failure to study and obey the Scriptures, for when the word of God is set aside, its power to restrain the evil passions of the natural heart is rejected. Men sow to the flesh and of the flesh reap corruption.

“With the setting aside of the Bible has come a turning away from God’s law. The doctrine that men are released from obedience to the divine precepts has weakened the force of moral obligation and opened the floodgates of iniquity upon the world. Lawlessness, dissipation, and corruption are sweeping in like an overwhelming flood.” Prophets and Kings, 623, 624.

3 “THEY ENTERED INTO A COVENANT”

  • What did the people promise, in light of their previous experiences in apostasy, by a solemn oath made at a special gathering? II Chronicles 15:12–15.
  • In our efforts to win souls to Christ, how may the example which Asa set on this occasion be an encouragement to us today? II Chronicles 15:9.

Note: “Follow on to know the Lord. If you will do this, you will win souls to Christ. Not only will your own soul be saved; the power that converts your soul will enable you to set an example that will win others to Christ.” The Youth’s Instructor, June 9, 1914.

  • How will honest outsiders be convinced of the saving power of the truth—by listening to us or by watching us? Matthew 5:16; I Timothy 4:12, 16.

Note: “He who deservedly bears the name of Christian, which signifies Christlike, will be filled with piety and purity, with love and reverence for God and Jesus Christ whom He hath sent; and his spirit, his words, his actions, will all bear the impress of Heaven. Others will see that he has been with Jesus and learned of Him, His prayers will be simple and fervent, and will ascend to God on the wings of faith. Learning in the school of Christ, he will have a humble opinion of himself; and though he may be poor in this world’s goods, he may be rich in the graces of God’s Spirit, and may bless and enrich others by his spirit and influence, because Christ is in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. He will shed about him an atmosphere of hope and courage and strength, and will put to shame those who are worldly, selfish, formal professors, who have a name to live and are dead.” Sons and Daughters of God, 85.

“The world can only be warned by seeing those who believe the truth sanctified through the truth, acting upon high and holy principles.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 980.

4 ASA’S MISTAKES

  • After having entered into a solemn covenant with the Lord, how was Asa’s faith tested, and how did he fail? II Chronicles 16:7–9.

Note: “Asa’s long record of faithful service was marred by some mistakes, made at times when he failed to put his trust fully in God. When, on one occasion, the king of Israel entered the kingdom of Judah and seized Ramah, a fortified city only five miles from Jerusalem, Asa sought deliverance by forming an alliance with Benhadad, king of Syria.” Prophets and Kings, 113.

  • When Asa’s failure to trust God in the time of need was rebuked by God’s prophet, how did he commit a second mistake? II Chronicles 16:10.
  • Why does the Bible narrate both the victories and the failures, the positive and negative traits of the character of the men and women that have been connected with the work of God? Proverbs 15:13.

Note: “The pen of inspiration, true to its task, tells us of the sins that overcame Noah, Lot, Moses, Abraham, David, and Solomon, and that even Elijah’s strong spirit sank under temptation during his fearful trial. Jonah’s disobedience and Israel’s idolatry are faithfully recorded. Peter’s denial of Christ, the sharp contention of Paul and Barnabas, the failings and infirmities of the prophets and apostles, are all laid bare by the Holy Ghost, who lifts the veil from the human heart. There before us lie the lives of the believers, with all their faults and follies, which are intended as a lesson to all the generations following them. If they had been without foible they would have been more than human, and our sinful natures would despair of ever reaching such a point of excellence. But seeing where they struggled and fell, where they took heart again and conquered through the grace of God, we are encouraged, and led to press over the obstacles that degenerate nature places in our way.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 12.

5 THE DANGER OF DESPISING REPROOF

  • What lesson can we learn from Asa’s second mistake? Proverbs 10:17; 15:10.

Note: “Instead of humbling himself before God because of his mistake, ‘Asa was wroth with the seer’ (II Chronicles 16:10, first part).” Prophets and Kings, 113.

“There will be men and women who despise reproof and whose feelings will ever rise up against it. It is not pleasant to be told of our wrongs. In almost every case where reproof is necessary, there will be some who entirely overlook the fact that the Spirit of the Lord has been grieved and His cause reproached. These will pity those who deserved reproof, because personal feelings have been hurt. All this unsanctified sympathy places the sympathizers where they are sharers in the guilt of the one reproved.” Testimonies, vol. 3, 359.

“Our Creator and our Commander, infinite in power, terrible in judgment, seeks by every means to bring men to see and repent of their sins. By the mouth of His servants He predicts the dangers of disobedience; He sounds the note of warning and faithfully reproves sin. His people are kept in prosperity only by His mercy, through the vigilant watchcare of chosen instrumentalities. He cannot uphold and guard a people who reject His counsel and despise His reproofs.” Prophets and Kings, 426.

“Let us thank the Lord for the warnings He has given to save us from our perverse ways.” Sons and Daughters of God, 260.

Are You Ready for the Time of Trouble?

I believe that the time of trouble is right around the corner for God’s people. God’s people should not be afraid of the time of trouble. When I was a little boy, I used to have nightmares about the time of trouble. I have found out since, that when you know the Lord Jesus Christ, you do not need to worry about the time of trouble. It is during this time that Michael is going to stand up to protect God’s people.

We are going to study about the persecution of God’s people. Second Timothy 3:12 tells us that, “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” Is persecution of God’s people something new? No, it has been going on for thousands of years, but there is going to be a time of trouble that is going to come upon God’s people that is going to be worse than any persecution that has ever taken place. Have you heard about what happened to God’s people during the Dark Ages, about how the early Christians were fed to the lions?

“In every age since the fall of Adam the opposition of evil agencies has made the lives of those who would be loyal and true to God’s commandments a continual warfare. Those who would at last be victorious must meet and conquer the forces of Satan, who with fierce determination opposes every step of advance. They must meet a vigilant foe, a crafty enemy who never sleeps and who tries untiringly to undermine the faith of God’s servants.” In Heavenly Places, 260. Do you know what it means when it speaks of undermining the faith of God’s servants? It means to discourage them. If that does not work, then there is an effort to undermine the work God’s servants are doing.

I believe that one of the master strokes of Satan in recent memory has been the Waco tragedy. Because that fanatical group had a tie-in with the Seventh-day Adventist Church some sixty years ago, the structure is now trying to show them to be an example of what takes place when groups separate from the organized structure, thereby casting reproach upon all independent ministries. I believe this was a master stroke of Satan to tie in anyone who dares, in 1993, to stand for the truth, with the group in Waco. Perry Parks, the president of the Montana Conference, immediately following the disbanding of the Troy, Montana Church said that the only difference between the Troy Church and Waco is that the Troy group had no guns.

Let me tell you; any man who would be so vile and low, who would stoop to compare the Historic Adventist independent ministries with the fanatical group in Waco, is absolutely devoid of all honesty. Cyril Miller, the Southwestern Union Conference president made the statement that the independent ministries and those responsible for the billboards have the potential of being more dangerous than the group in Waco had.

Satan has worked though his agents to agitate, to bring reproach upon the cause of God. We have been told that this is exactly what we are to be faced with in the last days, and we have not seen anything yet. There will be more reproach brought upon the truth and those who dare to stand for truth, than anything we have yet seen.

Let me assure you that there is no peace between truth and error. “The antagonism that exists between the spirit of Christ and the spirit of Satan was most strikingly displayed in the world’s reception of Jesus. It was not so much because He appeared without worldly wealth, pomp, or grandeur that the Jews were led to reject Him. They saw that He possessed power which would more than compensate for the lack of these outward advantages. But the purity and holiness of Christ called forth against Him the hatred of the ungodly.” The Great Controversy, 506. This is why Jesus was hated, for no other reason. “His life of self-denial and sinless devotion was a perpetual reproof to a proud, sensual people. It was this that evoked enmity against the Son of God. Satan and evil angels joined with evil men. All the energies of apostasy conspired against the Champion of truth.” Ibid.

What is apostasy? When you hold to a religious belief and later backslide from it and renounce what you once believe, that is apostasy. So, in the last days, we see that Satan is going to use the energies of apostasy. Now, does this mean that he is going to use people of other churches against Seventh-day Adventists? In order to be an apostate Adventist, you must have once been an Adventist and have backslidden. This does not necessarily mean you will no longer call yourself a Seventh-Day Adventist, because if you did that, you could not do as much damage. No, these people will still call themselves Seventh-day Adventists. They will still attend Seventh-day Adventist churches, but they will be suing people they do not like, and they will not believe what true Seventh-day Adventists have believed for one hundred and fifty years.

“The same enmity is manifested toward Christ’s followers as was manifested toward their Master. Whoever sees the repulsive character of sin, and in strength from above resists temptation, will assuredly arouse the wrath of Satan and his subjects. Hatred of the pure principles of truth, and reproach and persecution of its advocates, will exist as long as sin and sinners remain. The followers of Christ and the servants of Satan cannot harmonize. The offense of the cross has not ceased. ‘All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.’ 2 Timothy 3:12.” The Great Controversy, 507

Please do not waste your time, folks, calling me and suggesting a meeting with the conference men to try to reconcile. Can we reconcile? Folks, I am sorry. When the Waldensian Christians were persecuted, when God’s faithful people down through the ages who have been persecuted were approached by those who wanted to work out a compromise, they responded by telling them that when they would forsake their false doctrines and separate from sin, they would gladly embrace them; but as long as they insisted on being joined to falsehood, there was no purpose in talking.

Friends, do not think that some of the independent ministries are unwilling to reconcile. Oh, we are! We want to be reconciled with the corporate structure, and if they would be willing to get the Pentecostalism, the New Age spiritualism and the Neuro-linguistic programming of our pastors out of the church and ask for forgiveness, we would get on with preaching the three angel’s messages together. There cannot, however, be reconciliation over falsehood.

“All who in that evil day would fearlessly serve God according to the dictates of conscience, will need courage, firmness, and a knowledge of God and his word; for those who are true to God will be persecuted, their motives will be impugned, their best efforts misinterpreted, and their names cast out as evil.” The Acts of the Apostles, 431. We cannot be timid in the last days. We can no longer warm the pews. “No longer consent to listen without protest to the perversion of truth.” Selected Messages, book 1, 196. You are not going to obtain courage and firmness unless you are reading and studying.

God always divides His people up into two groups, and this is happening right now. There are no longer any gray areas; things are becoming black and white.

“He [Satan] is now preparing for his last campaign against the church. All who seek to follow Jesus will be brought into conflict with this relentless foe. The more nearly the Christian imitates the divine Pattern, the more surely will he make himself a mark for the attacks of Satan.” The Great Controversy, 510

Have you heard of the carrot and the stick routine? First of all, the person trying to conform you to his idea hangs the carrot out—something you like—and an attempt is made to entice you to conform to his idea. If you do not go for that, then the stick is brought out; and if you still do not conform, he will hit you with the stick. It is a method of Satan.

“As the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes more bold and decided, the law will be invoked against commandment keepers. They will be threatened with fines and imprisonment, and some will be offered positions of influence, and other rewards and advantages, as inducements to renounce their faith.” Ibid., 607

I do not know how the devil will try to use the carrot on you, but just as he offered to Jesus all of the kingdoms of this world if He would but bow down and worship him, he will come to you, offering you advantages to be gained by compromise. Just as the alternative to accepting the bribe was death, so in the last days, if you remain faithful, expect betrayal from your fellow Adventists. “Those who apostatize in time of trial, will, to secure their own safety, bear false witness, and betray their brethren. Christ has warned us of this, that we may not be surprised at the unnatural, cruel course of those who reject the light.” The Desire of Ages, 630

I believe that The Great Controversy does more to prepare God’s people than any other book.

“When He leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. In the fearful time, the righteous must live in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor.” The Great Controversy, 614

Now what does it mean to live without an intercessor? It mans that we must have allowed Christ to give us victory over all sin in our life.

“The restraint which has been upon the wicked is removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent. God’s long-suffering has ended. The world has rejected His mercy, despised His love, and trampled upon His law. The wicked have passed the boundary of their probation; the Spirit of God, persistently resisted, has been at last withdrawn. Unsheltered by divine grace, they have no protection from the wicked one. Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human passion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old.” Ibid.

Do you realize that in A.D. 69, when Cestius had surrounded Jerusalem problems were encountered in the homeland and the Romans suddenly withdrew? This was a sign that had been given by Jesus nearly forty years earlier. The Christians, following Jesus’ instructions, fled from the city and not one lost. The following year, Titus, another Roman general, again surrounded the city. Rather than attack the city, Titus resolved to starve the people out. Eventually things got so bad that people would try to slip out of the city gates at night just to find some grass to eat. If they were caught by the Romans, they were crucified in the area surrounding the city. It finally became so bad that the Roman soldiers had difficulty moving among the crosses, they had become so numerous. And, if they managed to escape the Romans and get back into the city, the people were killed by their own countrymen for the grass they had risked their lives to obtain.

Here, we read, however, that when God’s presence is finally withdrawn from the earth, it is going to be more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old. Can we really fathom how terrible this world will be?

But even though God’s presence is withdrawn from the world, it is not withdrawn from His people. His presence is never withdrawn from His people.

“Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.” Revelation 18:8

“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.” Matthew 24:22, This means that it will be worse than any other persecution that has ever come upon this earth. Are we really ready for this? It comes right down to your Christian experience and how much you depend upon the Lord Jesus Christ, because if you depend upon Him enough, then you will be able to stand, and this is the only way that you will be able to stand.

Do God’s people suffer during this time?

“The people of God will not be free from suffering; but while persecuted and distressed, while they endure privation and suffer for want of food, they will not be left to perish. That God who cared for Elijah will not pass by one of His self-sacrificing children. He who numbers the hairs of their head will care for them, and in time of famine they shall be satisfied. While the wicked are dying from hunger and pestilence, angels will shield the righteous and supply their wants. To him that ‘walketh righteously’ is the promise: ‘Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.’” The Great Controversy, 629

“Some were denouncing God and cursing Him. Others rushed to the people of God and begged to be taught how they might escape His judgments. But the saints had nothing for them.” Early Writings, 281. Why are the saints unwilling to help? It is because probation has closed. “The last tear for sinners had been shed, the last agonizing prayer offered, the last burden borne, the last warning given. The sweet voice of mercy was no more to invite them. When the saints, and all heaven, were interested for their salvation, they had no interest for themselves. Life and death had been set before them. Many desired life, but made no effort to obtain it. They did not choose life, and now there was no atoning blood to cleanse the guilty, no compassionate Saviour to plead for them, and cry, ‘Spare, spare the sinner a little longer.’” Ibid.

We hear about the time of trouble, and then we hear about a special part of this time of trouble know as Jacob’s time of trouble. During Jacob’s night of wrestling, through the entire time he was struggling, he feared that his sin had not been forgiven. Though he had confessed and repented, he feared that he had not obtained forgiveness. During this time of trouble, God’s people realize that there is no more forgiveness for sins. There is the awful realization that they are either saved, or lost, and that the plan of salvation is over. They will also be concerned as to whether they failed to do anything during the time of salvation. They will realize that should they fail, God will be dishonored, and this will bring a torture of mind we do not now comprehend. Though it is a terrible ordeal for God’s people, it is a time for them to look up in faith. The person who has in these times of relative peace and prosperity developed perfect faith in God, will not then be as severely tried as those who have failed to gain this experience.

Right now the Lord is allowing trials and troubles to come to us to develop the faith we will need to stand in the final time of the great test. God wants us to learn to live moment by moment in perfect peace because of our confidence in Him.

“When Christ shall cease His work as mediator in man’s behalf, then this time of trouble will begin. Then the case of every soul will have been decided, and there will be no atoning blood to cleanse from sin.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 201

Friends, we must get our eyes off of the things of this world and no longer allow the things that people are saying against us, or the problems that come against us in our daily lives, to bother us, but to turn them over to the Lord. We have to give up the concern that we have, that if we turn it over to the Lord, it may not turn out as we want it to.

“As Satan influenced Esau to march against Jacob, so he will stir up the wicked to destroy God’s people in the time of trouble. And as he accused Jacob, he will urge his accusations against the people of God. He numbers the world as his subjects; but the little company who keep the commandments of God are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph would be complete. He sees that holy angels are guarding them, and he infers that their sins have been pardoned; but he does not know that their cases have been decided in the sanctuary above. He has an accurate knowledge of the sins which he has tempted them to commit, and he presents these before God in the most exaggerated light, representing this people to be just as deserving as himself of exclusion from the favor of God. He declares that the Lord cannot in justice forgive their sins and yet destroy him and his angels. He claims them as his prey and demands that they be given into his hands to destroy.

“As Satan accuses the people of God on account of their sins, the Lord permits him to try them to the uttermost. Their confidence in God, their faith and firmness, will be severely tested. As they review the past, their hopes sink; for in their whole lives they can see little good. They are fully conscious of their weakness and unworthiness. Satan endeavors to terrify them with the thought that their cases are hopeless, that the stain of their defilement will never be washed away. He hopes so to destroy their faith that they will yield to his temptations and turn from their allegiance to God.

“Though God’s people will be surrounded by enemies who are bent upon their destruction, yet the anguish which they suffer is not a dread of persecution for the truth’s sake; they fear that every sin has not been repented of, and that through some fault in themselves they will fail to realize the fulfillment of the Saviour’s promise: ‘I will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world.’ Revelation 3:10. If they could have the assurance of pardon, they would not shrink from torture of death; but should they prove unworthy, and lose their lives because of their own defects of character, then God’s holy name would be reproached.” The Great Controversy, 618,619

When Moses saw the great apostasy of the people of Israel in the wilderness when they worshipped the golden calf, he chose rather to die himself than to have the people destroyed and bring reproach upon God. This is the concern that people of God will have for the honor of God’s name in these trying times.

“Those who exercise but little faith now, are in the greatest danger of falling under the power of satanic delusions and the decree to compel the conscience. And even if they endure the test, they will be plunged into deeper distress and anguish in the time of trouble, because they have never made it a habit to trust in God. The lessons of faith which they have neglected they will be force to learn under a terrible pressure of discouragement.” The Great Controversy, 622

Are you ready to give God every portion of your life? Are you ready to say, “Lord, prepare me for the time of trouble. Help me to be willing to give these little things that happen to me every day, over to You and to learn to trust You implicitly”? If we cannot in confidence do this now, we will not be able to stand in the time of trouble which all of God’s faithful must soon meet.

The End

The Seed of the Woman

Perhaps the most powerful gospel sermon that was ever preached on the subject of the “Women’s Seed” was preached by the Lord Himself and is recorded in Genesis 3. This sermon is of great importance for us in the times in which we are living because it addressed the issues that we are facing today.

“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, yea, hath God said, he shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, he shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1-5

Though we will see more dimensions as we progress, in these few verses, the parameters are set for the rest of the Bible.

“Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

Did you notice what happened? The devil used what is known as a covert negative. A covert negative is the insinuation of a doubt while seeking to appear otherwise.

“And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden.”

Eve did something that we have been warned never to do—she parleyed with the enemy. Ellen White tells us that the devil, through the serpent, hypnotized her. He used conversational hypnosis, otherwise known as NLP.

God has given to us a commission to proclaim the everlasting gospel, not to parley with the enemy. The enemy, however, seeks to engage us in negotiation, and, like the woman, we parley with him, allowing him to gain control over our minds.

“But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not surely die.” Now the devil directly challenges the word of God.

He continues, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” In other words, you, rather than God, will determine what is good and evil. This is the philosophy presented by Nietsche in his book, Beyond Good and Evil. He presents the concept that it is possible for a person to develop a personal lifestyle established upon his own norms of good and evil and without regard to the definition of good and evil laid down by the Lord. This is the original lie that the serpent told Eve. Even though today this idea is no longer questioned by the majority of people in the world, it is spiritualism, which, like a dark fog, is settling over all society. There is scarcely an aspect of human life, whether it be government, religion, law or culture, that is not affected.

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Genesis 3:6,7

Having accepted Satan’s assertions as truth, they were now allied to him—one in nature.

“And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.” Verse 8

They had never responded this way before. This was their first experience in hiding from God.

“The Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?” Verse 9

This same question has come ringing down through time. Where art thou modern man? Where are you in your thinking? Where are you in relationship to My word? Where are you in relationship to My presence? Where art thou?

“And he said, I heard Thy voice in the garden and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” Verse 10

Man hides himself from God because of the sense of his nakedness and his fear of appearing in the presence of His Creator unclothed by the garment of Christ’s righteousness. It is to meet this great need that the three angels’ messages focus on the proclamation of the righteousness of Christ, which is to be received by faith.

“And He said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, wherof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?” verse 11. Have you partaken of spiritualism? Have you fallen into the trap of the devil?

“And the man said, The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.” Verse 12

The spirit of accusation, which leads to the fracturing of human relationships, something never before known, now brought division between Adam and his wife. Today, under the impact of spiritualism, human relationships are being broken apart, unraveling the very fabric of society. Ellen White tells us that this process will continue to grow worse until we will see a situation in this world which will exceed that which brought about the reign of terror in France. See Education, 228

“The Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; and upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.” Verses 13,14

Now comes the fist gospel sermon ever preached. Notice that, in addressing Adam and Eve, God directs his words to the serpent. “And I will put enmity [hatred, or hostility] between thee and the woman, and between they seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Verse 15

In these few words, the Lord laid down the great parameters for the struggle that would take place in the working out of the great controversy—the unending warfare that would exist between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent until the close of time.

Ellen White, commenting on this, says, “his [the devil’s seed will war against the righteous, and the wicked will endeavor to exterminate the good from the face of the earth….Whenever a soul takes a decided stand for truth, the head of the serpent is bruised by the seed of the woman, and the serpent can bruise but the heel of the seed.” Youth’s Instructor, October 11, 1894

“The enmity referred to in the prophecy in Eden was not to be confined merely to Satan and the prince of life, it was to be universal….The seed of Satan is wicked men, who resist the Spirit of God, and who call the law, as did their father the devil, a yoke of bondage.” Manuscript Releases, vol. 16, 117

“He that committeth sin is of the devil.” 1John 3:8

Here the distinction is clearly made. The seed of the woman are those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony and faith of Jesus. The seed of the wicked one, the devil, are those who call the law a yoke of bondage and who commit sin. This is the cleavage point. Incidentally, that is also the cleavage point between Israel and Babylon, as we will shortly see.

“The enmity that exists in the heart against evil has no natural existence [Now, this is a very important point.] but is an enmity that has been created through the agency of the Holy Spirit….He [Satan] originates traditions, and through his maxims he succeeds in assimilating to his own nature the nature of those who do not yield allegiance to the law of God.” Signs of the Times, June 11, 1894

We do not have a natural hatred against evil, but this hatred against evil has been put in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Notice how Satan works by introducing traditions and maxims to conform all who do not yield allegiance to the law of God, to his own nature.

“It is God alone that can continually put enmity between the seed of the woman and the serpent’s seed. After the transgression of man, his nature became evil. There was peace between Satan and fallen man. Had there been no interference on the part of God, men would have formed an alliance against heaven….There is no native enmity between fallen angels and fallen men….Fallen angels and fallen men join in companionship.” Gospel Herald, July 1, 1898

In the outworking of these principles, we see a separation, but also unity. On the one hand, we see the seed of the woman in harmony with God, with His law and the unfallen beings throughout the universe. In contrast, there develops a harmony between fallen man and fallen angels. Jesus wants us to recognize these distinctions, which is why, when the Jewish leaders confronted Him seeking to engage Him in a debate, he said, “Ye are of your father the devil.” See John 8. They were the seed of the serpent, and Jesus clearly identified them as such.

How different from this clear demarcation between right and wrong is the present concept of Christian love. This idea has captured the thinking of American society, completely divesting love of the control placed upon it by an awareness of the holiness of God.

The modern approach to love is really the result of merging Buddhism with Christianity. The Buddhist view of love is primarily oriented to human beings and the elimination of hatred. It seeks to teach beautiful concepts of love while denying the fall and need of a Saviour from sin. While it sounds like a beautiful concept, and is one with which most people would heartily agree, it is spiritualistic in nature and does not reckon with the reality of Scripture. Today these concepts have infiltrated all our psychology, entirely altering the culture of the western world. But what did God say to Adam and Eve? I will put hatred between thy seed and her seed.

The true Christian view of love recognizes that God’s love does not naturally exist in the human heart. Jesus, the Saviour, is needed. In the pure, holy love that He gives in the gift of His holiness, righteousness is supreme, and results in supreme love to God and impartial love to man. Christian love, centered in Christ and regulated by the law of God, is in complete harmony with the Scriptures.

Genuine love is ever antagonistic to the spirit of Satan, for there is an unreconcilable conflict between Satan and Christ. Jesus said, “ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.” “I came not to bring peace but a sword.” Matthew 10:22,34

If all of humanity were to accept Christ and come into harmony with the principles of heaven, the most wonderful love would exist. It would be a heaven on earth, but true everlasting peace can only be achieved through surrender to Christ and His principles.

The Buddhistic concept of love is a tolerance of everything but the truth as it is in Jesus. It is, therefore, especially opposed to the proclamation of any message which warns against false religion, such as the exposure of the man of sin. It is one of the foremost antagonists of the love of Christ as manifested in the gift of His righteousness. It gives evidence of its hostility to the Lord and His truth by striving to turn the soul’s loyalty from Christ while seeking to destroy the operation of the Holy Spirit in the soul, which works in the heart of man, inspiring hostility against Satan and his seed.

God is a being of holiness, and God’s holiness involves hostility against sin. He commits Himself to act in the defense of the presence of holiness in humanity, which is why again and again, as at the Red Sea when with a strong arm He delivered Israel, God has acted in behalf of His people. In doing so, He is praised as a holy God because he has acted in complete harmony with the purity of His righteous character. It is this holiness of which we are to be partakers.

“For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:10,14

This helps us to understand some of the passages in the Psalms that are so perplexing to our society. “The foolish shall not stand in Thy sight; Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.” Psalm 5:5
Is God not a God of love? How, then, can the Scriptures say, “Thou hatest all workers of iniquity”?

God is a God of love, but His holiness involves a righteous hostility against sin and against the seed of the serpent.

True peace and true love is found only in the new birth and in surrender to Christ. “I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers. I have hated the congregation of evildoers; and will not sit with the wicked.” Psalm 26:4,5

Who are dissemblers? They are the people who profess what they really do not have in their heart. These people are going into the congregation of the Lord professing one thing, while their hearts are quite out of harmony with their profession. By their actions, they are seeking to deceive.

Notice, also, the concept of separation from the wicked, which is foundational to the holiness of God. We are to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, and holiness involves complete separation from all evil.

There is a very interesting development brought to view in the parable of the wheat and the tares, as given in Matthew 13.

“Another parable put he forth unto them saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.” Verses 24,25

The Spirit of Prophecy tells us that the tares represent a class who are the fruit of embodiment of error, as reflected in false principles. The enemy that sowed them is the devil. Neither God nor His angels ever sowed a seed that would produce a tare. The tares are always sown by Satan, the enemy of God and man. The sowing of tares in the professed church of Christ is an act of revenge Satan commits against Christ. Jesus pointed it out in this parable so that the true church members could be warned that Satan would sow his tares—infiltrators and destroyers—among the pure wheat seed of Christ.

Surely, this is true of our time, for while we were asleep, a crop of tares has sprung up in the structure. I was at the seminary when there was a great flowering of tares that seemed to suddenly appear. All of them were in harmony in their belief that the law of God could not be kept.

“The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.” Verse 27

The Lord has such a regard for the protection of even one soul that He does not want even one soul to be lost. Because the fabric of life might be involved and some of the wheat might be destroyed in the process of removing the tares, he says, “Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.” Verse 30

Here is demonstrated the separation and unity that comes at the time of the harvest just before the close of probation.

Later, the disciples came to Jesus seeking for a clearer understanding of the tares. This concept of the tares troubled them. In explaining the parable to them Jesus, clearly delineated along the same parameters that He had in Genesis 3:15.

“Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and His disciples came unto them, he that soweth the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one.” Verses 36-38

“The enemy that sowed them is the devil. [The devil, at work in the professed church, sowed the tares.] The harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth His angels and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity, and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Verse 39-43

“And the dragon was wroth with the woman [Here is anger, hostility and warfare.] and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17

Once again, at the end of time, we see manifest the hatred that as to exist between the seed of the woman and that of the serpent. The remnant of the seed of the woman are the last in the long line of those who kept the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus. The seed of the serpent, which are the tares, have hostility against the truth of obedience to God’s law. The devil working through them, attacks the wheat, seeking to destroy the seed of the woman who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

This raises a question, What happens when you have a situation where there gets to be so many tares that they are choking out the good seed?

Jesus was faced with this same problem in His day. In The Desire of Ages. Chapter 33, we are told that when Jesus came preaching, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel,” he first labored in Judea. “If the leaders in Israel had received him, he would have honored them as His messengers to carry the gospel to the world, but Israel knew not the time of her visitation.” As the jealousy and distrust of the Jewish leaders ripened into open hatred, the Sanhedrin rejected Christ’s message and the leaders sought to turn the hearts of the people away from Him as well. Jesus was dealing with tares who were bent on his death. Therefore, Jesus departed from Jerusalem, leaving behind the temple, the religious leaders and the people who had been instructed in the law. Instead, he turned to another class, in another field, to proclaim His message and to gather out those who should carry the gospel to all nations.

“As the light and life of men was rejected by the ecclesiastical authorities in the days of Christ, so it has been rejected in every succeeding generation. Again and again the history of Christ’s withdrawal from Judea has been repeated.” Desire of Ages, 232

But I ask you, Where was the good seed? The tares were not the good seed; they were never the true church. The Spirit of Prophecy tells us that Caiaphas had not one ray of light from God, they had no thought of separating themselves from the established church, but the religious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those who bore it were forced to seek another class who were longing for the truth. There were so many tares they could no longer function in the Roman Catholic Church.

Today, few are listening for the voice of God and are ready to accept truth in whatever guise it may be presented. Too often, those who follow in the steps of the Reformers are forced to turn away from the churches they love in order to declare the plain teaching of God’s Word. They are, however, the wheat, the seed of the woman. They are the church. The tares are not the church of God; they are the servants of the devil. They are the seed of the wicked one who war against the seed of the woman.

And so, this great message that the Lord preached in the Garden of Eden comes ringing down to our day, clearly defining who the true church really is. It is the remnant of the seed of the woman, those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

We must never ever forget this principle because it is essential to our salvation to understand who the seed of the woman really is. We must know the great cause to which we are committed if we are to be prepared to sacrifice our life for it.

The End

Who are the Brethren?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16

I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and I hope that it is the same with you. If, however, we are going to really understand the gospel, we need to do as the Bereans did. The Bereans “were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11

It used to be that Adventists were known as people of the Bible, but those days are past. No longer are we studying as we once did, and in the place of spiritual food, we are being fed pabulum. As a result, we are being blown to and fro by every wind of doctrine that comes along. Paul told Timothy: Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed—[What?]—rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

I believe there are several scriptures that are misunderstood in Adventism today. One of the most misunderstood and misapplied passages of Scripture is the one found in Matthew 13 dealing with the wheat and the tares. This parable has been so twisted in Adventism that people today believe they are to accept any abominable thing that comes into the church. They look at you with a pious face and say; “Oh, we can’t say anything about it. Don’t you know about the ‘wheat and the tares’? The wheat and the tares grow up until the time of the harvest, and the time of the harvest is the end of the world—the Second Coming.”

So, are all of these abominations that are going on, to continue until the very end; and are we to do nothing about it? Are we to just sit back and piously say: “It’s the wheat and the tares”? Nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus told the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13:24-30, but he then went on to explain it to His disciples in verses 36-43.

Many times Jesus had to explain His words to His disciples because they could not understand their meaning. They had been so misled by the religious leaders—brain washed, if you please, that their minds seemed incapable of expanding. They had listened to a perversion of truth for so long, from those blind leaders, that they could not understand these simple truths. So, once again, Jesus privately explains this parable of the wheat and the tares.

“Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house, and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth His angels and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Matthew 13:36-43

What is the harvest? It is the end of the world. I am embarrassed to admit it, but for years I believed that the harvest was the Second Coming. I never really thought much about it; I just thought that somehow the Lord was going to come down and the angels were going to suddenly separate the wheat and the tares. In one sentence, however, Ellen White makes so clear how this is to take place.

“The tares and the wheat are to grow together until the harvest; and the harvest is the end of probationary time.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 72. Do you know what that means? Clearly, the harvest must take place before the close of probation. Yes, the harvest takes place in the general time period of the Second Coming, but it takes place some time before.

While at our camp meeting in Kansas—the Steps to Life camp meeting—we saw a wonderful thing taking place; the combines going through the wheat fields, and what a sight it was. All day and into the night they worked. There were long lines of trucks, large, eighteen wheelers, waiting to be weighed. I asked one old timer how long this harvesting had been going on.

He said, “Oh, this has been going on for weeks.”

I said, “Well, when is it going to be over?”

He replied, “Well, we want to get it over before the rain gets it wet.” You see, the harvest is not an instantaneous process; it takes place over a period of time.

That is the way the harvest is with God. It is not an instantaneous thing. The angels are not going to suddenly come down and with a swish, the harvest is over and boom—we all go home.

If the harvest must take place before the close of probation and the harvest is not an instantaneous thing, but a process that takes place over a period of time, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the harvest is either here, or very near.

Let us consider the process that takes place in the harvest.

First of all, the wheat are bound together, aren’t they? There is a separation taking place, but there is also a unity, as they are being bound together.

What happens to the tares? They are being bound together in bundles, too; so among the tares, we see a unity also. But what is going to happen to these bundles? They are going to be burned.

I am firmly convicted that right now the harvest is going on. As never before, we are seeing a unity in separation among those who profess to be the people of God. The tares are uniting and the wheat are uniting. There is separation and unity going on at the same time, and it is taking place right now.

Do not ever let anybody try to tell you that the parable of the wheat and the tares says that we must allow sin and corruption and every abominable thing to come into God’s church, because the wheat and tares all grow together until the end. That is not what this parable teaches at all. In fact, do you know what it does teach? This parable teaches that we are not to disfellowship the wrong people.

We are told in Christ’s Object Lessons that the parable of the wheat and the tares teaches us that we are to judge people on open sin, but we are not to judge motives. If a person is keeping the commandments of God, you are to leave them alone. The workers in the parable of the wheat and the tares said, “Master, should we pull them up?” he said, “No! Leave them alone. Let them grow together until the harvest.” Now, when is the harvest? Right now. And who does the separating? The angels.

You see, according to Matthew 13, if someone is keeping the commandments of God, you have no right to touch them.

Now let us look at Matthew 18. I believe this is the most misused chapter of the Bible. According to Matthew 18, if I have seen a brother in private sin, I am to come to him and say, “I want to talk to you brother. You are doing thus, or so, violating the commandments of God.” It is just between myself and this brother. But if he says, “I do not accept that. I’m going to keep on doing it,” I am then, and not until then, to proceed to the next step.

It is now time to go to the elders. The elders say, “Brother, we need to see you. One person has already talked to you and you refused to repent, confess and forsake your sin. If you will not repent today, we are going to have to take it to the church.” If he still refuses to repent, you are left with no choice but to take it to the church, which in turn must disfellowhsip him.

When it is not a public sin, but a private matter, you are to go to the person privately and share your concern. Now, if he will repent, confess it to the Lord and say he is sorry, then you are to forget it. That is it. That is as far as it goes. But if he will not accept it or repent, then you are to take it to the elders. If he still will not accept the counsel and repent, then you are to take it to the church and he is to be put out and disfellowshipped.

If you read the passage where Mrs. White explains Matthew 18, she says very definitely that what is bound on earth is bound in heaven only if this procedure has been followed according to God’s plan. If it has been violated in any way, God does not recognize the decision. So, before we start saying we are going to Matthew 18 somebody, we had better know what Matthew 18 says. Never tell someone that you are going to “Matthew 18 them” when they are not in sin. If you want to read with someone, study with them or even talk over theology, then do what Paul did: reason with them. See Acts 17:2; 18:4-9. When you tell someone that in coming to them you are following Matthew 18, then, according to Scripture, you are coming to them as a brother reproving them for a sin they have committed, or that you believe they have done.

Matthew 18 does not apply to anyone who is threatening the prosperity of the church and leading our people into sin. Mrs. White makes this very clear in Testimonies, vol. 2, 15.
“My husband then stated that he should understand that these words of our Lord had reference to cases of personal trespass, and could not be applied in the case of this sister. She had not trespasses against Sister White. But that which had been reproved publicly was public wrongs which threatened the prosperity of the church and the cause. Here, said my husband, is a text applicable to the case: 1 Timothy 5:20: ‘Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.’”

What is Mrs. White saying? She is saying that Matthew 18 does not apply to anyone who is leading God’s people astray—open sin. Any time that somebody, a religious leader, or whoever, does anything that threatens the prosperity of the church, you are not to Matthew 18 them. And if you do, then you do not understand Matthew 18.

I am amazed what has happened in Adventism. Open sin is to be openly rebuked, but we have become such passivists, we are afraid to even speak up against it. We have clasped hands with this ecumenical spirit, that says: “oh don’t say anything; don’t rock the boat; let’s just all be friends.” We think it is so Christian, but it is of the devil. The devil would just love to sugarcoat these differences and have us say, “Well, let’s just put aside our differences and come together on the things that we don’t agree on.” But brothers and sisters, white is white and black is black, not gray, as the ecumenical movement would have us believe.

When you read the basics of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and realize that the whole premise of NLP is that a person’s mind can be changed without them even knowing it, making white black and black white, you realize that it is the most sinister evil of the twentieth century.

Constance Cumby, author of Hidden Secrets of the Rainbow, spoke with me several times on the telephone. She said, “John, I know a lot about Adventism; maybe more than you think I know, as a non-Adventist. But, I’m here to tell you, the other churches do know what’s going on in Adventism better than Adventists know.” She said: “In my research for Hidden Secrets of the Rainbow, I came across the facts that Seventh-day Adventists were doing more to embrace Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and more Seventh-day Adventist ministers have been trained in Neuro-Linguistic programming than all other denominations of America combined.” She went on to say: “If you are blowing the whistle on NLP in Adventism, you can tell them to write or call me and I will share with them the result of my research in my book Hidden Secrets of the Rainbow. I will say without reservation, and as an attorney, it is my opinion that Neuro-Linguistic programming is the most sinister and diabolical thing that has come into Christianity in the 20th century.”

“But when he [John the Baptist] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” Matthew 3:7-10

Now, who were the Pharisees and the Sadducees? They were the religious leaders, the men who would not let John the Baptist speak at any of the churches. Was John part of the structure? He was an independent minister who said what had to be said. He had no degrees and carried no credentials. In fact, when the religious leaders came out to him, if he had had any training in public relations he would have baptized them; but instead, he turned to them and said, “You snakes.” More than that, he called them rattlesnakes—vipers. He said, “You bunch of rattlesnakes. You do the work of the Lord, and then I’ll baptize you. What you’re doing now is nothing but pretense. You are just trying to get on the right side of the people. You’re trying to be politicians.”

While they were putting up the facade of being so sweet, in their hearts, they really could not stand him.

Don’t be fooled; times have not changed. People, however, are so easily deceived. You will hear them say: “Oh, he is so sweet; any time we go to see him, he just invites us right in to his office and talks to us. We are so honored.”

It is snake oil folks. Whether you know it or not, these leaders of God’s professed people hate everything you stand for and they will try to destroy it in every way. They will use either the carrot or the stick, whichever they think will get the best result with you. If sugar coating you and rolling out the red carpet is the way to get your cooperation, they are going to do it; but don’t be deceived, because, if the carrot doesn’t work, they are going to use the stick.

John the Baptist knew what was in their hearts and he called them a bunch of rattlesnakes. There were no doubt, some who said: “Oh, John, you shouldn’t have said that to them. You did the wrong thing; don’t you know who those men are? Why, they could have given great success to your cause if you had just baptized them. Together we could all be one big happy family.”
Do you know why he said what he did? Because the Holy Spirit told him to say it. Man’s ways are not God’s ways.

“The forerunner of Christ’s first advent was a very plain-spoken man. He rebuked sin, and called things by their right names. He laid the ax at the root of the tree. He thus addressed one class of professed converts [we found out who they were—the religious leaders] who came to be baptized of him in Jordan: ‘O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruit meat for repentance….And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the tree; therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.’” Testimonies, vol. 1, 321. Now listen to this. “In this fearful time, [What time is she talking about? She’s talking about the harvest] just before Christ is to come the second time, God’s faithful preachers will have to bear a still more pointed testimony than was born by John the Baptist. A responsible, important work is before them; and those who speak smooth things, God will not acknowledge as his shepherds. A fearful woe is upon them.” Ibid.

We read about Moses and Aaron. Everybody loved Aaron, but they thought Moses was so terrible. Oh, the way he yanked that golden calf down, burned it, ground it into powder, threw it into water and then made them drink it. They said, “Oh, Moses, you’re so harsh, but Aaron, is such a loving man. Why can’t you be like Aaron, Moses?’ God does not, however, see things as such. Moses was the one who was favored of God and Aaron was the one who was cursed for leading God’s people into apostasy. The same thing is taking place today. Idolatry is being brought into the church by these smooth talking Aarons, and our people are saying, “Ah, but he’s such a loving man.” Let me tell you something folks. These loving preachers who are preaching nothing but love, love, will love you right into hell.

There are people who say, “John, you ought to be more Christlike.” I could not agree more, but let’s understand what it means to be Christlike with apostate religious leaders. Did you ever notice that Jesus never talked to the laity the way He did to the apostate religious leaders? Why, Jesus addressed them just as John had done. See Matthew 23; John 8:44.

Was Jesus part of the structure? No, and yet I have had people tell me that you have to be a part of the structure. If you are not a part of the structure, then you are not a part of the church; and if you are not a part of the church, then you are out of God’s field and you are lost. Well, then John the Baptist was lost; Jesus was lost; all the disciples were lost.

Do you know what the ultimate disfellowshipping was in Jesus’ day? Crucifixion!

You may have been told that the structure is the seventh church of Revelation 3 and that there is no eighth church. Therefore, as the structure, is the church, you must stay with the structure. Let me ask you a question. Just because God started the Jewish structure, did that mean that the Jewish structure was able to hold Him hostage for eternity? No! When the structure apostatized, he separated Himself from it. While the structure can be a part of the church, it is not the church. If it apostatizes, it ceases to be a part of the church.

The structure of the Seventh-day Adventist Church began in 1862. The seventh church, however, began in 1844. What was God’s church between 1844 and 1862? Can we conclude that God did not have a church because there was no structure? Certainly not; God has always had a church. God’s church was in existence before the structure, and if the structure apostatizes, the church will continue on. The church, God’s true church, is never dependent upon the structure for its existence.

The church is what the church has always been, and Revelation 12 identifies that church. The church is made up of those who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” What is the testimony of Jesus Christ? The Spirit of Prophecy. See Revelation 19:10.

Today, we attribute the Spirit of Prophecy to the works of Ellen G. White, but has the Spirit of Prophecy only been in existence since 1844? God always had prophets and they have always been part of His church. If you believed on them, you were a part of God’s church, and if you did not, you were not a part of His church. This has always been the criteria for determining who was a part of God’s church and who was not. With God there is no variableness nor shadow of turning. He is not going to change the rules for the Seventh-day Adventist Church at the end of time. Where do we get this type of twisted of reasoning? He rejected the structure in A.D. 31 because they apostatized from Him, and he can and will do it again. Who do we think we are that we can hold God hostage, and no matter what we do, God has to take us into heaven, whether He wants to or not?

The question is raised: Does this mean that we are going to start another church? Nobody is starting another church. In 1844, God started the last church—the Advent Movement. And, yes, God started a structure eighteen years later; but if that structure apostatizes from Him, He still has His church because the structure never was the church. It was only a part of it; the church still goes on.

I find people who try to make Mrs. White contradict what it says in Revelation 12, making her concept of what the church is different from all the prophets that came before her.

Let us look at Revelation 12:1-6. The first five verses tell us of God’s true church, that pure woman in the first century. Then in verse 6, we are taken to the second and third century. But, we know that an amazing thing happened at the end of the second century and the beginning of the third; the church apostatizes. How did they apostatize? Over their style and day of worship. You see, there was a wild solar holiday that the pagans kept and the church members said, “Look, if we have a special evangelistic series on Sunday, we can get our pagan friends to come.” Sure enough, it worked. In fact, it became so successful that they started having these special church growth evangelistic meetings on Sunday every week, and the pagans came by the thousands. You know the story.

We do not know the exact date, history does not tell us, but some time between the second and third century, the church of Rome, the Christian apostolic church of Rome that was founded and nurtured by Paul, had an official church business meeting and decided to start keeping the first day of the week—Sunday—and to quit going to church on Sabbath. But, there was a small group of dissident trouble makers. These divisive people who caused problems in the church stood up and said, “No, we’re not going to go to church on Sunday; we’re going to keep going to church on Sabbath.” Can you believe that?

Do you know what the majority in the church did? They disfellowshipped those who wanted to go to church on Sabbath. Do you know what it says in verse 6? It says that the church went into the wilderness. Now, let me ask you: Who went into the wilderness, the majority that disfellowshipped them or the little group that was disfellowshipped? It was the little group (who had had been disfellowshipped by the majority) who went out into the wilderness because the majority had left the truth, attaching themselves to falsehood. What then is God’s definition of the church? The little group of disfellowshipped and persecuted believers who were faithful to the truth.

On the other hand, what was man’s definition of the church in the second and third centuries? It was the large group who made up the majority, and who were celebrating on Sunday. They were the group who had money, power and the credential card-carrying pastors. They had the church buildings; they had the wealth and the worldwide organization. The majority in Rome who had disfellowshipped them had everything, or almost everything. There was one thing, however, that they lacked, and that was the truth. But, as God defines the church as the ones who have the truth, none of the other things mattered.

Do we find Seventh-day Adventists apostatizing over their method and style of worship?

“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Revelation 12:10. Have you ever been called an accuser of the brethren? Do you know who are the accusers of the brethren?
First, let us establish who the real brethren are.

“And they [the brethren] overcame him [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.” Revelation 12:11

We find that throughout the book of Revelation, when it is explaining and classifying God’s people, the people who are going to be saved in the last days are referred to as overcomers. They find victory over sin in their life through the power of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. It says, “They [the brethren] overcame him [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.” This means that they are overcomers and they are willing to die for the truth. In verse 17 it says that they keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. That is the definition of who the brethren are. This means that anyone who does not teach victory over all sin in this life through the power and blood of Jesus Christ, is not one of the brethren. It means that if they do not keep the commandments of God and love, teach, read and practice the Spirit of Prophecy, they are not one of the brethren.

In days past I was rather careless about whom I called the brethren. I used that term for different sets of people. I want to tell you, after understanding Revelation 12, I am very careful of whom I call the brethren. Oh, yes. Now who are the brethren that it is talking about there? Well, let us go on to the next verse. If I come against a messenger that God has raised for the last days to preach the straight testimony to God’s people and I try to stop him in every thing that he does and I disfellowship him, what have I become? I have become an accuser of the brethren, because that man is one of the brethren in the eyes of God. Regardless of what men say, do not let anybody scramble your brain on this issue. The brethren are those who fulfill the criteria of Revelation 12. If a person does not fulfill the criteria of Revelation 12, he is not one of the brethren and you can just slice that any way you want. Those who come against the true and faithful brethren are doing the work of Satan and are the accusers of the brethren.

For so many years, Adventists have been led to believe that staying with the structure is synonymous with staying with the church; but, where are we told that? The definition of God’s church today is what the definition of God’s church has always been. Why is that so hard for us to see and accept?

Jesus had the same problem with His disciples when He said to them, “I can not tell you everything; you can’t handle it, You have been so brainwashed by your religious leaders that I have to couch everything I say and preach to you in parables, because if I came out and told you the truth, it would just blow you away.”

Unfortunately, God’s people are in the same condition today. Have we been brainwashed for so long that we cannot see that the definition of God’s church is what it has always been? Things have not changed. God’s last day prophet to his last day church told us: “From the beginning, faithful souls have constituted the church on earth.” Acts of the Apostles, 11. Nothing has changed.

“God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep his commandments. ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them’ [Matthew 18:20]. Where Christ is even among the humble few, this is Christ’s church, for the presence of the High and Holy One who inhabiteth eternity can alone constitute a church.” Upward Look, 315

It is not any organizational structure that constitutes God’s church. The structure can be part of God’s church, but God’s church today is what God’s church has always been—faithful souls. Oh, may God take the blinders from our eyes. May we be Bereans. May we read and study like we have never read and studied before, because if we are not Bereans, if we are not last day Bereans, we are going to be lost.

The End

Who is an Historic Seventh-day Adventist?

Today, our people are being taunted with: “You people call yourselves ‘Historic Seventh-day Adventists,’ but you don’t even know what being an historic Seventh-day Adventist really is.” Sooner or later someone is going to ask you this question and you have to have something to say, so let us look at, “What is an Historic Seventh-day Adventist?”.
If you are not familiar with the little book Issues: The Letter the NAD Officers Did not Publish, The Church, it is part two of the Issues books printed by Steps to Life. The first half is a letter to the NAD, and the last is material written by John Grosboll. There is a section in the back called “Fundamental Principles.” The material contained there first appeared in an article by James White in the Signs of the Times in 1874. In this article, he outlined the beliefs of Historic Seventh-day Adventists. It should also be said that an Historic Seventh-day Adventist believes Ellen G. White to have been a prophet of God and that her writings have divine authority. Therefore, an Historic Seventh-day Adventist will give precedence to God’s last day prophet, to his last day church, over his own opinion. An Historic Seventh-day Adventist will never say, “Well, she did not know what she was talking about,” or “You know, she didn’t understand everything.” You see, God does not have junior prophets—a prophet of God is a prophet of God. There are no percentage scales; either you are a prophet of God or you are not. Either Ellen White was a prophet of God on the same par as the Biblical prophets or she was not a prophet at all.

Fundamental Principles:
By James White
[Comments by John Osborne in brackets and italicized]

In presenting to the public this synopsis of our faith, we wish to have it distinctly understood that we have no articles of faith, creed, or discipline aside from the Bible.
[John Osborne—So, an Historic Seventh-day Adventist absolutely has no creed outside of Inspiration—bottom line. Now, if you take any other book of spiritual significance, aside from Inspiration, then you are not a Historic Seventh-day Adventist. If you take any other book and place it on a par, or pattern your life or the church, or anything else after it, then you are not an Historic Seventh-day Adventist.]

We do not put forth this as having authority with our people, nor is it designed to secure uniformity among them, as a system of faith, but is a brief statement of what is, and has been, with great unanimity, held by them. We often find it necessary to meet inquiries on this subject, and sometimes to correct false statements circulated against us, and to remove erroneous impressions which have obtained with those who have not had an opportunity to become acquainted with our faith and practice. Our only object is to meet this necessity. With these remarks, we ask the attention of the reader to the following propositions which aim to be a concise statement of the more prominent features of our faith. That there is one God, a personal, spiritual Being, the Creator of all things, omnipotent, omniscient, and eternal, infinite in wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy; unchangeable, and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit. Psalms 139:7.

That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, and Son of the Eternal Father, the One by whom God created all things, and by whom they do consist; that He took on Him the nature of the seed of Abraham for the redemption of our fallen race; that He dwelt among men, full of grace and truth, lived our example, died our sacrifice, was raised for our justification, ascended on high to be our only Mediator in the sanctuary in heaven, where, with His own blood, he makes atonement for our sins; which atonement, so far from being made on the cross, which was but the offering of the sacrifice, is the very last portion of His work as priest, according to the example of the Levitical priesthood, which foreshadowed and prefigured the ministry of our Lord in heaven. See Leviticus 16; Hebrews 8:4,5; 9:6,7; etc.

[John Osborne—Now, what this is saying is that we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God. His life was our example; in his death he was our substitute—he died as our Sacrifice. He is now acting as our High Priest in heaven, pleading his blood for the forgiveness of our sin. Do you believe that? Amen.]

That the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, contain a full revelation of His will to man, and are the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

That baptism is an ordinance of the Christian church, to follow faith and repentance, an ordinance by which we commemorate the resurrection of Christ, as by this act we show our faith in His burial and resurrection, and, through that, of the resurrection of all the saints at the last day; and that no other mode fitly represents these facts than that which the Scriptures prescribe, namely, immersion. Romans 6:3-5; Colossians 2:12.
That the new birth comprises the entire change necessary to fit us for the kingdom of God, and consists of two parts: First, a moral change, wrought by conversion and a Christian life; second, a physical change at the second coming of Christ, whereby, if dead, we are raised incorruptible, and, if living, are changed to immortality in a moment in the twinkling of an eye. John 3:3,5; Luke 20:36.

We believe that prophecy is a part of God’s revelation to man; that it is included in that Scripture which is profitable for instruction (2 Timothy 3:16); that it is designed for us and our children (Deuteronomy 29;29); that so far from being enshrouded in impenetrable mystery, it is that which especially constitutes the Word of God a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105; 2 Peter 1:19); that a blessing is pronounced upon those who study it (Revelation 1:1-3); and that, consequently, it is to be understood by the people of God, sufficiently to show them their position in the world’s history, and the special duties required at their hands.

[John Osborne—As Historic Seventh-day Adventists, we not only believe in all of Scripture, but especially in the books of Daniel and Revelation. We do not believe the book of Revelation is a sealed book, but that it is very important, revealing to us where we are in earth’s history and outlining the place of God’s church in the last days.]

That the world’s history from specified dates in the past, the rise and fall of empires, and the chronological succession of events down to the setting up of God’s everlasting kingdom, are outlined in numerous great chains of prophecy; and that these prophecies are now all fulfilled except the closing scenes.

[John Osborne—So, if you are going to be an Historic Seventh-day Adventist, you not only have to believe in prophecy, you must also understand and believe the true applications of prophecy, including the day for a year principle. See Numbers 14:34, Ezekiel 4:6]

That the doctrine of the world’s conversion and temporal millennium is a fable of these last days, calculated to lull men into a state of carnal security, and cause them to be overtaken by the great day of the Lord as by a thief in the night; that the second coming of Christ is to precede, not follow the millennium; for until the Lord appears, the papal power, with all its abomination, is to continue, the wheat and tares grow together, and evil men and seducers wax worse and worse, as the Word of God declares.

That the mistake of Adventists in 1844 pertained to the nature of the event then to transpire, not to the time; that no prophetic period is given to reach to the second advent, but that the longest one, the two thousand and three hundred days of Daniel 8:14, terminated in that year, and brought us to an event called the cleansing of the sanctuary.

[John Osborne-Everyone who calls himself an Historic Seventh-day Adventist ought to be listening to what the husband of God’s prophet wrote in 1874, when he wrote that all time prophecy came to an end in 1844. Just a short time before this, his little wife had said exactly the same thing. If you do not believe that, you do not believe in Historic Adventism.]

That the sanctuary of the new covenant is the tabernacle of God in heaven, of which Paul speaks in Hebrews 8, and onward, of which our Lord, as great High Priest, is minister; that this sanctuary is the antitype of the Mosaic tabernacle, and that the priestly work of our Lord, connected therewith, is the antitype of the work of the Jewish priests of the former dispensation (Hebrews 8:1-5, etc.); that this is the sanctuary to be cleansed at the end of the 2300 days; what is termed its cleansing being in this case, as in the type, simply the entrance of the High Priest into the Most Holy Place, to finish the round of service connected therewith, by blotting out and removing from the sanctuary the sins which had been transferred to it by means of the ministration in the first apartment (Hebrews 9:22,23); and that this work, in the antitype, commencing in 1844, occupies a brief but indefinite space, at the conclusion of which the work of mercy for the world is finished.

That God’s moral requirements are the same upon all men in all dispensations; that these are summarily contained in the commandments spoken by Jehovah from Sinai, engraved on the tables of stone, and deposited in the ark, which was in consequence called the “ark of the covenant,” or testament for under the sounding of the seventh trumpet we are told that “the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament” (Revelation 11:19).

That the fourth commandment of this law requires that we devote the seventh day of each week, commonly called Saturday, to abstinence from our own labor, and to the performance of sacred and religious duties; that this is the only weekly Sabbath known to the Bible, being the day that was set apart before Paradise was lost (Genesis 2:2,3), and which will be observed in Paradise restored (Isaiah 66:22,23); that the facts upon which the Sabbath institution is based confine it to the seventh day, as they are not true of any other day; and that the terms Jewish Sabbath and Christian Sabbath , as applied to the weekly rest day, are names of human invention, un-Scriptural in fact, and false in meaning.
That, as the man of sin, the papacy has thought to change times and laws (the laws of God, Daniel 7:25), and has misled almost all Christendom in regard to the fourth commandment; we find a prophecy of a reform in this respect to be wrought among believers just before the coming of Christ, Isaiah 56:1,2; 1 Peter 1:5; Revelation 14:12, etc.

[John Osborne—Do you believe that God’s people in the last days are going to stand up and expose the man of sin, the papacy, and how he has changed the seventh day Sabbath? This is Historic Adventism.]

That, as the natural or carnal heart is at enmity with God and His law, this enmity can be subdued only by a radical transformation of the affections, the exchange of unholy for holy principles; that this transformation follows repentance and faith, is the special work of the Holy Spirit, and constitutes regeneration or conversion.

[John Osborne—This means that you are going to have a lifestyle change. When a person gives their heart to the Lord Jesus Christ, they change; they are a new creature in Jesus Christ.]

That, as all have violated the law of God, and cannot of themselves render obedience to His just requirements, we are dependent on Christ, first for justification from our past offenses, and, secondly, for grace whereby to render acceptable obedience to His holy law in time to come.

[John Osborne—Through the power and strength of Jesus Christ, you can be victorious over all sin in your life. Do you believe that?]

That the Spirit of God was promised to manifest itself in the church through certain gifts, enumerated especially in 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4; that these gifts are not designed to supersede, or take the place of, the Bible, which is sufficient to make us wise unto salvation, any more than the Bible can take the place of the Holy Spirit; that in specifying the various channels of its operation, that Spirit has simply made provision for its own existence and presence with the people of God to the end of time, to lead to an understanding of that Word which it had inspired, to convince of sin, and work a transformation in the heart and life; and that those who deny to the Spirit its place and operation do plainly deny that part of the Bible which assigns to it this work and position.

That God, in accordance with His uniform dealings with the race, sends forth a proclamation of the approach of the second advent of Christ; that this work is symbolized by the three messages of Revelation 14, the last one bringing to view the work of reform on the law of God, that His people may acquire a complete readiness for that event.

[John Osborne—If you are not willing to stand up, proclaim, teach and believe in the three angels of Revelation 14, you are not an historic Seventh-day Adventist.]

That the time of the cleansing of the sanctuary (see proposition 10), synchronizing with the time of the proclamation of the third message, is a time of investigative judgment, first, with reference to the dead, and, at the close of probation, with reference to the living, to determine who of the myriads now sleeping in the dust of the earth are worthy of a part in the first resurrection, and who of its living multitudes are worthy of translation—points which must be determined before the Lord appears.

That the grave, whither we all tend, expressed by the Hebrew sheol and the Greek hades, is a place of darkness in which there is no work, device, wisdom, or knowledge. Ecclesiastes 9:10.

[John Osborne—The grave is a place of sleep where the dead know not anything—waiting for the resurrection. What a beautiful message that is.]
That the state to which we are reduced by death is one of silence, inactivity and entire unconsciousness. Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5,6; Daniel 12:2; etc.

That out of this prison house of the grave, mankind are to be brought by a bodily resurrection; the righteous having part in the first resurrection, which takes place at the second resurrection, which takes place a thousand years thereafter. Revelation 20:4-6.

[John Osborne—Now do you understand that? There are going to be two resurrections—the righteous come forth when Christ comes; then there is the thousand year millennium; and after the thousand year millenium, the wicked come forth. Now the righteous come forth perfected, changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. The wicked, when they come up a thousand years later, come up the same way they went into the grave. Is that clear?]

That at the last trump, the living righteous are to be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and with the resurrected righteous are to be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, so forever to be with Lord.

That these immortalized ones are taken to heaven, to the New Jerusalem, the Father’s house in which there are many mansions (John 14:1-3), where they reign with Christ a thousand years, judging the world and fallen angels, that is, apportioning the punishment to be executed upon them at the close of the one thousand years (Revelation 20:4; 1 Corinithians 6:2,3); that during this time [thousand years] the earth lies in a desolated and chaotic condition (Jeremiah 4:20-27), described, as in the beginning, by the Greek term abussos, bottomless pit (Septuagint of Genesis 1:2); and that here Satan is confined during the thousand years (Revelation 20:1,2), and here finally destroyed (Revelation 20:10; Malachi 4:1); the theater of the ruin he has wrought in the universe, being appropriately made for a time his gloomy prison house, and then the place of his final execution.

[John Osborne—Christ comes in the clouds of heaven, the righteous are taken, the wicked are destroyed by the brightness of his coming. This earth is desolate, as Scripture says in Jeremiah 4:22,23. Satan is here with all his angels, but with no one to tempt. They cannot go anywhere; they have to just sit there bound with a great chain—a chain of circumstances—for a thousand years and think about the desolation they have caused.
The righteous living in heaven at this time are going over the records of the wicked dead. This is when you are going to be able to have your questions answered. If you have a question about a loved one that did not make it to heaven, you can see how the Holy Spirit worked on that person’s heart, but how they rejected His work. You are going to have all of your questions answered, and then your tears are going to be wiped away. There are going to be some tears when your loved ones do not make it to heaven; you are not going to have amnesia, but your tears will be wiped away.]

That at the end of the thousand years, the Lord descends with His people and the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2), the wicked dead are raised and come up upon the surface of the yet unrenewed earth, and gather about the city, the camp of the saints (Revelation 20:9), and fire comes down from God out of heaven, and devours them. They are then consumed root and branch (Malachi 4:1), becoming as though they had not been (Obadiah 15, 16). In this everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:9), the wicked meet the everlasting punishment threatened against them (Matthew 25:46). This is the perdition of ungodly men, the fire which consumes them being the fire for which “the heavens and the earth, which are now,” are kept in store, which shall melt even the elements with its intensity, and purge the earth from the deepest stains of the curse of sin. 2 Peter 3:7-12.

[John Osborne—At the end of the thousand years, the New Jerusalem will come down. The wicked are resurrected and Satan says, “We can take the city.” He is going to convince the wicked that they are the righteous and that the Antichrist and the wicked are inside the city, This is exactly what the secret rapture doctrine teaches. The dear people who believe the secret rapture doctrine believe that the Antichrist is going to have the Holy City and that the wicked are inside and the righteous are outside. They are being prepared to be deceived.
But, when the wicked try to take the city, fire is going to come down from God out of heaven and devour them. The Bible calls this God’s strange work, but he has to purify the universe of sin, once and for all, never to rise up again. ]

That a new heavens and earth shall spring by the power of God from the ashes of the old, to be, with the New Jerusalem for its metropolis and capital, the eternal inheritance of the saints, the place where the righteous shall evermore dwell. 2 Peter 3:13; Psalm 37:11, 29; Matthew 5:5.

[John Osborne—When somebody asks: “What is an Historic Seventh-day Adventist?” you may tell them: One who believes what our historic pioneers believed and taught, what they struggled, prayed, and pled with God to show them, and that which he confirmed for them through the Spirit of Prophecy. This is what it means to be an Historic Seventh-day Adventist.]

The End

How to Strengthen Faith

One of the most common excuses Satan presents to a praying heart is, “Your faith is too weak to expect God to answer.” This lie is often accepted as the truth. Yet Jesus has exposed the Devil’s lie. He said that if we have a tiny mustard seed of faith, mountains can be removed.

In our own “Gethsemane” experience God helped us to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in strengthening faith. We share these faith-strengthening principles with you. These principles are all Biblical. … You can also experience wonderful answers in exercising the faith God has given you.

We remembered God’s past answers to prayer.

“And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee” (Deuteronomy 8:2). …

For years we had been impressed with the way God’s professed people of “old” forgot God. The Scriptures declare that the reason for their many backslidings was:

“They forgot God their Saviour” (Psalm 106:21).

“They soon forgot His works” (Psalm 106:13).

“Thou … hast forgotten God” (Deuteronomy 32:18).

We concluded that since forgetfulness of God leads to a weak, backslidden faith, remembering will lead to increased faith and confidence. This is in harmony with the principle, “we … beholding … are changed into the same image” (2 Corinthians 3:18). If we look at failure, our hearts will be filled with fear and our faith will weaken.

As we reviewed past miracles from our God of love, we could cry out, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee” (Psalm 56:3).

“I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember Thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all Thy work, and talk of Thy doings” (Psalm 77:11, 12).

“Remember His marvellous works that He hath done; His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth” (Psalm 105:5).

“He hath made His wonderful works to be remembered” (Psalm 111:4).

When we were sick almost unto death, we determined to drill ourselves on God’s wonderful works to others as well as to ourselves. We thought of His word that made the worlds. (See Psalm 33:6, 9.) We cried out to God, “Your word was powerful enough to speak the worlds into existence.” We remembered “the sabbath day, to keep it holy … for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth” (Exodus 20:8–11).

We went through God’s dealing in various ages. He opened the Red Sea and let His people go through on dry land. He caused the walls of Jericho to fall down without human aid. We traced God and His dealings through the Old Testament and into the New Testament. We followed our Lord Jesus. We visualized the leper coming to him (Mathew 8:2), and Jesus healing him by His word. We saw the woman with the issue of blood healed according to her faith. On and on we went. We found that this remembering gave us peace and strengthened our faith almost beyond description. We actually realized the fulfillment of the promise in Isaiah 26:3: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.”

To stay our minds on our Lord is to increase our faith, our trust, our confidence.

We observed that whenever we found our faith weakening and we talked about what God had done for us in the past, our faith became much stronger. Try it out. It works for anyone. It is a principle of strengthening faith.

We looked away from our circumstances.

At one time we seemed almost to lose our minds. We could see nothing but failure ahead. There seemed no ray of light whatever. As we glared at the dismal future, God’s Spirit flashed the following text into our minds:

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

We knew that God was speaking directly to our hearts. As we now recall, we had not read this Scripture in a long time. God was saying to us, “Stop looking at the problems. You have already recognized them. You have fully identified them. Problem-centeredness will not solve problems. But there is power in looking to Me.” We had great difficulty in turning our minds from the problems. They were so close, so stupendous. But as we cried out to God, He helped us to look toward Him.

“Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:22).

“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me” (Isaiah 46:9).

We learned to talk faith even when we seemed void of it.

We scanned the Holy Scriptures. There we learned that men of faith talked faith. They talked and sang faith when all was dark.

Gideon’s army of 300 shouted faith when surrounded by an enemy army, numberless as the sands of the sea. (See Judges, chapter 7.)

Joshua’s men shouted victory against the walls absolutely impregnable. (See Joshua, chapter 6.)

Paul and Silas, held fast in the prison, sang faith at the midnight hour, and were immediately delivered. (See Acts, chapter 16.)

So it has been through the ages. The ten spies who talked doubt perished. (See Numbers 14:28–32.) The two who talked faith realized the fulfillment of God’s promise.

We learned that God rewards those using the “faith muscle” rather than the “doubt muscle.”

We prayed often before an open Bible.

We learned the Bible is full of activity in prayer. One might say the majority of prayers in Bible times were accompanied by gestures. These did not change God, but these gestures in prayer helped man’s faith. When men offered a sin offering, they laid their hands on in prayer. When a wave offering was presented to the Lord there was another gesture. When George Muller prayed before an open Bible, that did something to his faith. It is said that he received $7,500,000 when money was real money, without soliciting a penny. He cared for thousands of orphans, sent hundreds of missionaries overseas, and gave away thousands of pieces of literature. He prayed often before an open Bible. We took the Bible right in our hands and claimed its promises. The gesture was good for our faith. (See Romans 10:17.)

We placed our finger right on a Bible promise.

Have you ever heard of a man who promised in writing that he would pay another man a certain sum at a certain time? And when that date arrived he forgot to pay? Then the man whom he owed went to visit him. He opened his letter. He showed the man where he had promised to pay. He placed his finger right on the promise. It gave him assurance in asking and expecting an answer. So we placed our fingers right on God’s promise.

And “faith cometh by hearing … the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

We used supporting promises of God’s word.

Let us clarify what we mean by “supporting” promises. Supporting promises, as we identify them, are statements of Scripture which say God will keep His word. They say God cannot lie. They declare God will never break His word. We call these statements of Scripture “supporting” promises. They are, to us, in a different category from “specific” promises.

Specific promises, as we categorize them, are promises for specific things like: wisdom (James 1:5); guidance (Psalm 25:9); healing (Jeremiah 33:6); the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13).

When we claimed a specific promise, like the one for wisdom, we would also refer to the “supporting” promises. We would tell God why we believed He was giving the wisdom promised. It was because (and here we quoted the supporting promise), “God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent [change his mind]: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good” (Numbers 23:19)?

Other supporting promises that we referred to were:

  • Matthew 24:35
  • Hebrews 6:18
  • Joshua 23:14
  • Corinthians 1:20
  • Psalm 89:34
  • Isaiah 46:11
  • Peter 3:9
  • Psalm 119:89
  • Titus 1:2
  • Samuel 15:29
  • Isaiah 54:10
  • Psalm 119:90
  • Hebrews 10:23
  • Mark 9:24
  • John 11:41

We lifted up our hands to Jesus our Intercessor and Provider.

For years we had studied the teaching of the Scriptures regarding the “lifting up of holy hands” (1 Timothy 2:8 and Psalm 141:2).

We had learned that when Aaron was consecrated by Moses, his hands were waved before the Lord, containing things that represented Jesus. (See Leviticus 8:27–29).

We read the Psalmist’s statement, “Let … the lifting up of my hands be as the evening sacrifice” (Psalm 141:2).

We knew the evening sacrifice was a lamb (Numbers 28:4).

We knew this was a type of Jesus, “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29).

So as we lifted up our hands, we knew that this was a symbolic way of saying to the Lord, “We have no merits in our life. We have no worthiness of our own. But there is Jesus, the Lamb of God, standing between God’s justice and our guilt. We are coming through His name, in His merits.” The Father in heaven throws open the whole treasure house of the universe to Jesus, His Son, who has made our prayer His own.

We discovered that this gesture in prayer, though not often engaged in, yet in times of trouble brings great assurance. It destroys Satan’s insinuation that because of our unworthiness we cannot expect answers to prayer.

We tried to let our eyes of faith meet our Lord’s eager eyes.

We do not profess to have attained in this method of increasing faith.

But God’s eyes are looking for someone to look skyward. (See 2 Corinthians 16:9).

We cry out, … “our eyes are upon Thee” (2 Chronicles 20:12).

Thus as we look to Jesus “the author and finisher [perfector] of our faith,” something wonderful takes place (Hebrews 12:2).

Unity Through Faith in Christ

On the night of His betrayal, Christ made a very interesting statement, recorded in Luke 22:37: “For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.” [Emphasis supplied.]

Christ was quoting from Isaiah 53, a chapter that so faithfully and clearly describes Himself as the Messiah that Jewish parents refuse to discuss the chapter with their children. Thankfully, we are not so blind to the mercies of God that we refuse to recognize His prophetic voice speaking in the message He gave Isaiah centuries ago.

What are the things concerning Christ that “have an end” that He was referring to in Luke 22:37? A careful reading of Isaiah 53 will answer that question. Much of what Isaiah described about Christ ended at the cross—being “numbered with the transgressors”—but the entirety of the assertion He made in Luke has yet to come fully to pass. Christ continues to experience the sinfulness of sin as He pleads His blood before the mercy seat in the Most Holy Place in the heavenly sanctuary. And that ordeal will not end until the sanctuary is cleansed and He returns to this earth with the host of heaven to gather His saints.

Thus, we ponder if Christ’s statement that “the things concerning Me have an end” has a broader application. Indeed, many things concerning Him did have an end when He was crucified. But there is, in my opinion, another end yet to come, and that will occur when Christ returns to gather His saints and ends the misery that sin has brought upon this earth.

What must we do to cope with the trials of life until that glorious event occurs? Remember that Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:19 KJV, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”

Our hope lies not in this life, but in the life to come. Christ referred to that eternal life time and time again when He was on earth, though at the time few comprehended what He meant. The most famous reference, perhaps, is in John 3:16, a text that most professors of Christ learned at their parent’s knee.

The promise of eternal life, though, occurs over and over again in the record of Christ’s life as recorded in the gospels, and that promise is always based on the same condition—obedience—sometimes clearly stated and sometimes implied by the context of the statement.

In Matthew 19, we have this record: “Now behold, one came and said to Him, ‘Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?’ So He said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments’ ” (Matthew 19:16, 17).

This is a rather amazing statement for a reason that might be easily overlooked. Clearly Christ is mindful here of His human nature and recognizes the inherent capacity for sin in the natural heart, which He assumed when He came to this earth to rescue man from the wages of sin. Mindful of this, of the potential sinfulness of humanity, He refused to accept the accolade offered by this rich young ruler: “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.” After that assertion, Christ clearly states the one and only condition for eternal life: “keep the commandments.”

The gospel writer who wrote most frequently of the reward of eternal life was the apostle John, usually in his record of Christ’s interactions with non-believers or in response to questions from His erstwhile followers.

John records an interesting exchange in the sixth chapter of his gospel narrative, where there is a comprehensive record of the feeding of the five thousand and the events that followed.

Perceiving the intent of the masses to “take Him by force to make Him king” (John 6:15), Jesus absented Himself from the scene and sought solitude. After reuniting with His disciples in a rather startling manner (verses 19, 20), He engaged in an extended conversation with the people about Himself as the bread of life.

“And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst’ ” (verse 35). A bit later, Christ made a less symbolic, more direct statement regarding eternal realities: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life” (verse 47). Unfortunately, there were not many who were willing to carry their belief in Him to complete fulfillment, as we see as this crisis in Galilee was building.

Christ’s statements that followed were unacceptable to the masses, for they failed to understand the symbolism in his assertion that “… unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you” (verse 53).

Christ clearly stated in no vague language, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (verse 63), “many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more” (verse 66).

In the following chapter, John records a conversation that again was so full of symbolism that few truly understood His meaning.

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’ ” (John 7:37, 38).

The meaning of this statement that so puzzled His hearers is made clear in the Spirit of Prophecy:

“The flowing of the water from the rock in the desert was celebrated by the Israelites, after their establishment in Canaan, with demonstrations of great rejoicing. In the time of Christ this celebration had become a most impressive ceremony. It took place on the occasion of the Feast of Tabernacles, when the people from all the land were assembled at Jerusalem. On each of the seven days of the feast the priests went out with music and the choir of Levites to draw water in a golden vessel from the spring of Siloam. They were followed by multitudes of the worshipers, as many as could get near the stream drinking of it, while the jubilant strains arose, ‘With joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation’ (Isaiah 12:3). Then the water drawn by the priests was borne to the temple amid the sounding of trumpets and the solemn chant, ‘Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem’ (Psalm 122:2). The water was poured out upon the altar of burnt offering, while songs of praise rang out, the multitudes joining in triumphant chorus with musical instruments and deep-toned trumpets.

“The Saviour made use of this symbolic service to direct the minds of the people to the blessings that He had come to bring them. ‘In the last day, that great day of the feast,’ His voice was heard in tones that rang through the temple courts, ‘If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.’ ‘This,’ said John, ‘spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive’ (John 7:37–39). The refreshing water, welling up in a parched and barren land, causing the desert place to blossom, and flowing out to give life to the perishing, is an emblem of the divine grace which Christ alone can bestow, and which is as the living water, purifying, refreshing, and invigorating the soul. He in whom Christ is abiding has within him a never-failing fountain of grace and strength. Jesus cheers the life and brightens the path of all who truly seek Him. His love, received into the heart, will spring up in good works unto eternal life. And not only does it bless the soul in which it springs, but the living stream will flow out in words and deeds of righteousness, to refresh the thirsting around him.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 412.

In the eleventh chapter of John we have the record of the death and resurrection of Lazarus. After Christ and His disciples come to Bethany on the fourth day following Lazarus’ death, there is an interesting exchange between Martha and Jesus in which Martha’s understanding of the state of the dead is clearly revealed. “Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha said to Him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day’ ” (John 11:23, 24).

In response, “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this? ’ ” (verses 25, 26).

Though Martha responded positively, her response indicated that she failed to fully comprehend what belief in Christ fully means.

“To the Saviour’s words, ‘Believest thou?’ Martha responded, ‘Yea, Lord: I believe that Thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.’ She did not comprehend in all their significance the words spoken by Christ, but she confessed her faith in His divinity, and her confidence that He was able to perform whatever it pleased Him to do.” The Desire of Ages, 530.

There are two other passages in John’s gospel that should bring great joy to the believer. In John 16:33, Christ provides a reason for the continuing hope that His followers should have: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

There is no greater peace, in the fullest meaning of the word, that one can have than is obtained in recognizing that Christ’s victory over the enemy of souls is our victory as well. Truly, “in the world” we “will have tribulation.” We have an enemy who is determined to drag humanity down into the same miserable pit of sin and degradation that he currently occupies. Nevertheless, by fully believing in Christ, by nurturing that measure of faith that each of us has been given, we can “be of good cheer” and “overcome the world.”

The final passage in the gospel of John that expresses the eternal life available to all who have faith in Christ is given in Christ’s prayer in John 17.

John 17:20–23: “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

All who understand fully what “belief” in Christ entails will indeed be unified in the bonds of Christian brotherhood that John summarized succinctly but powerfully in his first missive: “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).

We cannot “walk in the light” unless we have complete faith in Christ as the Redeemer of mankind and fully believe that His blood cleanses us from all sin. Then that unity that Christ prayed so fervently for in John 17 will be a reality and we will indeed have true Christian fellowship with one another.

The gospel writers were not alone in their affirmation that obedience through faith in Christ imparts righteousness to the believer—that righteousness by faith that alone provides the spotless wedding garment to the saved. Paul alluded time and time again to the inseparable union of faith, righteousness, and eternal life.

One of his strongest statements occurs in Philippians 3:8, 9: “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.”

As Paul’s long, final imprisonment began and his itinerate ministry was drawing to a close, he continued to bear faithfully the message that God had laid upon his heart. When arraigned before Felix, he took the opportunity to preach one of his most meaningful and memorable sermons.

For two years, “a ray of light from heaven had been permitted to shine upon Felix, when Paul reasoned with him concerning righteousness, temperance, and a judgment to come. That was his heaven-sent opportunity to see and to forsake his sins. But he said to the messenger of God, ‘Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.’ He had slighted his last offer of mercy. Never was he to receive another call from God.” The Acts of the Apostles, 427.

Let us not be like Felix, who had at his disposal for two years one of the greatest expositors of the gospel, who apparently conversed with him at will, but who rejected this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to know more fully the way of salvation.

“And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ” (Acts 24:24).

“The faith in Christ” … Felix rejected his opportunity to understand what that meant. Thankfully, by the grace and love of god, we have on record Paul’s explanation of what it means to be in Christ and to have faith in Christ, so that we are “without excuse” if we fail to grasp the full import of what that means.

“But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:21–26).

“… through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe …”

Unity through faith in Christ!

Sealed By Grace Through Faith

Before Jesus can come the second time He must have a people on whose foreheads He can place the seal of the living God. What is this seal and how do we receive it? The scriptures teach us that God wants to write His law on our hearts. “I will put My law into their minds and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people” (Hebrews 8:10).

The prophet Isaiah tells us, “Bind up the testimony, seal the law among My disciples” (Isaiah 8:16). The law Isaiah is referring to is God’s ten commandments, the keeping of which Solomon taught was the whole duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13). What we see in Christianity today is a power that changed God’s moral law that was written by the finger of God on tables of stone. This anti-Christ power has boasted for hundreds of years that it had the authority and power to change this moral law. If you compare the teachings of the Catholic catechism with the ten commandments of the Bible you will find a world of difference. The order as well as the wording has been changed. The second commandment dealing with idolatry is conveniently missing and the fourth commandment became the third. To make up the ten laws, the tenth commandment has been divided into two.

Daniel prophesied that a power would arise after the apostolic church leaders died that would think to change times and laws (Daniel 7:25). The Protestant world has fallen into this delusion of Sunday worship that the Papal church has boastingly taught for centuries.

Uriah Smith wrote these words about the importance of the Sabbath commandment: “The author of this Sabbath law has declared who He is, the extent of His dominion, and His right to rule; for every created intelligent being must at once assent that He is the creator of all and has a right to demand obedience from all His creatures. Thus, with the fourth commandment in its place, this wonderful document among men that God only wrote with His own finger, has a signature, it has that which renders it intelligible and authentic, and it has a seal. But without the fourth commandment, the law is incomplete and unauthoritative.” Daniel and Revelation, 457.

This law of man’s devising in the Catholic catechism is not the law that God will write upon the hearts of His obedient children. His commandment-keeping people will offer the prayer of David: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

The agency that writes the seal of God upon the heart is the Holy Spirit. “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30). Ellen White calls it “the pure mark of truth.” Testimonies, vol. 3, 267.

On another occasion, she wrote these solemn words: “Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot of stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of all defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost.” Ibid., vol. 5, 214. We are warned that “not all who profess to keep the Sabbath will be sealed.” Ibid., 213. Our profession will be tested in the future if we do not have sufficient oil in our lamps (Matthew 25). The following statement gives one of the clearest definitions of the seal of God: “Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads—it is not any seal or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so that they cannot be moved—just as soon as God’s people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come.” “Ellen G. White comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 4, 1161.

It appears from this statement that the shaking and the sealing are events that happen together. The fiery trial of our faith will only purify our characters. The straight testimony must be given in the spirit and power of the Holy Spirit to reveal who is really on the Lord’s side (see Early Writings, 270). This will be a terrible ordeal for the church to face, but the Lord will see us through it all (Isaiah 40; Zachariah 10:1). There is only one way of salvation found in Scripture, “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). “For by grace ye are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

Likewise, we are sealed by faith in the great and precious promise of God’s word (2 Peter 1:4). His word to us today is: “Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds (thunder clouds), and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field” (Zechariah 10:1). We will have to enter into this experience of receiving the latter rain alone.

Compare Isaiah 40:8, 1 Peter 1:23–25. The prophet Zechariah also describes how this will be accomplished. “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem … . And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; … In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and uncleanness. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land … and the unclean spirit out of the land” (Zechariah 12:10–14, 13:1, 2).

The greatest victories for the church and for the individual Christian are not those victories gained by talent, education, wealth or the favor of man but those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power (see Patriarchs and Prophets, 203).

The destiny of the church is dependent upon heeding the counsel of the True Witness. Those within our church who are not willing to heed the counsel will rise up against it and this is what will cause a shaking among God’s people (see Early Writings, 270).

What I understand from these statements as to the cause of the shaking is that the very positive message, calling for a revival, will cause a negative response by those who do not recognize their need of the Holy Spirit.

Ellen White describes the results of the shaking: “I was shown those whom I had before seen weeping and praying in agony of spirit. The company of guardian angels around them had been doubled, and they were clothed with an armor from their head to their feet. They moved in exact order, like a company of soldiers. Their countenances expressed the severe conflict which they had endured, the agonizing struggle they had passed through. Yet their features, marked with severe internal anguish, now shone with the light and glory of heaven. They had obtained the victory and it called forth from them the deepest gratitude and holy, sacred joy.” Early Writings, 271.

She concludes this page with these words: “I asked what had made this great change. An angel answered, ‘It is the latter rain, the refreshing from the presence of the Lord, the loud cry of the third angel.’ ” Ibid.

It is the power of the Holy Spirit that seals and prepares us for translation as we cooperate by putting away our besetting sins of pride, selfishness, love of the world and every wrong word and action. We are sealing our destiny for translation. All glory belongs to the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29).

Enoch, the seventh generation from Adam, lived in such communion with God that God took him to Himself, denying Satan’s power over the human family that had been created in God’s image.

The apostle Paul commenting on the heroes of faith in the Old Testament briefly describes how Enoch was prepared for heaven in these words: “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God” (Hebrews 11:5). How he pleased God we are told in the next verse. He pleased God because he exercised faith in the great and precious promises in God’s word (2 Peter 1:4). He also believed that “God was a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6) by prayer and Bible study.

Another powerful type of the last generation who will be sealed is demonstrated by Jacob’s experience in wrestling with the angel at the brook Jabbok. Separated and alone at the brook, he saw this person approach him and thinking he was the enemy caused him to wrestle all night for victory.

When the Angel of the Lord touched Jacob’s thigh and crippled him he recognized his assailant was Christ. Then Jacob would not release his hold on his Savior until he received the blessing of the forgiveness of sin, especially his sin against his brother Esau.

Commenting on this experience of Jacob, Ellen White writes: “Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His experience testifies to the power of importunate prayer. It is now that we are to learn this lesson of prevailing prayer, of unyielding faith. The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 203.

We, like Jacob, must wrestle alone with God until we receive the power of the Holy Spirit in the latter rain. As Jacob received a name change because of his persistent faith so also the faith of the 144,000 will be rewarded as the Israel of God, the saints of the Most High God. They have followed the Lamb of God on earth and will have special privileges in the kingdom of God in heaven (see Early Writings, 19).

Isaiah’s prophecy will then be fulfilled by the 144,000. “He shall see of the travail of His soul and shall be satisfied” (Isaiah 53:11).

We must plead and agonize for His wonderful blessing in proportion to the value of this wonderful gift that God has promised His church (see The Desire of Ages, 668). Also, we must learn to walk and wrestle with God today as did Enoch and Jacob and cling to our Saviour and never let go until the morning breaks into eternal day.

We serve a God who loves us individually (John 3:16). May we each individually receive a goodly seal on this anti-typical day of atonement is my prayer for all Israel.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come, Thou fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me ever to adore Thee,
May I still Thy goodness prove,
While the hope of endless glory
Fills my heart with joy and love.

O, to grace how great a debtor,
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness like a fetter,
Bind me closer still to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart – O, take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.
