Who and What is Babylon?

“And another angel followed, saying, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.’” Revelation 14:8

“It was by departure from the Lord, and alliance with the heathen, that the Jewish church became a harlot; and Rome, corrupting herself in like manner by seeking the support of worldly powers, receives a like condemnation.” The Great Controversy, 382. If you do not understand that truth, you cannot understand what Babylon is. Let me explain that. The true church is a spiritual thing. Some people think that if you are in this organization, you are in Zion, and if you are in that organization, you are in Babylon. We must get over childish ways of thinking. Both Babylon and the true church are spiritual entities.

You see, the true church has to do with the mystery of godliness. Babylon has to do with the mystery of iniquity, or mystery of lawlessness, as Paul calls it in 2 Thessalonians 2. In Revelation 17, Babylon is referred to as a woman who is a great harlot. As a woman represents a church, and a harlot represents a church that is unfaithful, any church that becomes a harlot is part of Babylon. More than one church forms a part of Babylon because in Revelation 17:5 it says: “on her forehead a name was written: Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and of the abominations of the earth.” As she is the mother and she has daughters, clearly there are other churches that belong to this great system.

Notice some identifying marks about Babylon in Revelation 14:8.

  • It says that Babylon has fallen. If you are already lying on the floor, you cannot fall. To fall, at some time in the past you have to have been up in an elevated position so that you could fall. In other words Babylon is a church that at one time was in a pure and elevated, spiritual condition.

 

  • We see that Babylon uses force or coercion. It says, “She has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” So, she uses some kind of trickery, deceit, insinuation, force, or coercion to cause all of the people of the earth to drink this wine.

 

  • Babylon is a church or a spiritual organization that has world-wide influence. All of the nations in the world have been influenced by her.

 

  • As we saw in Revelation 17:5, Babylon is more than one church organization or group.

 

  • Babylon has to be a religious organization because it is a woman. (See 2 Corinthians 11:2; Jeremiah 6:2)

How does a church become a spiritual harlot? Let us go back to the Old Testament. We find in both the Old and New Testaments that those organizations that are referred to as Babylon were formerly in an elevated position. In fact, the prophets tell us that the nation of Israel became what you would call the equivalent of Babylon. In Isaiah 1, the prophet talked to Jerusalem, and he called her a harlot. That is the same as calling her Babylon, though she was still called Jerusalem. Obviously, you can call yourself Jerusalem and yet spiritually be a part of Babylon. When your spiritual condition indicates that you have fallen, the prophet says you are spiritually a harlot. (See The Great Controversy, 382.)

In Ezekiel 23, there is a whole chapter about two sisters. These two sistesr have become harlots. Who are these two harlots? It says in verse 4 that one is Samaria and the other is Jerusalem. I want you to see how a church becomes spiritually a harlot and becomes part of Babylon.

“The Lord also said to me: ‘Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. For they have committed adultery [they are harlots], and blood is on their hands.’” They worshiped idols, and worshiping idols constituted spiritual adultery. But that is not all. “‘And even sacrificed their sons whom they bore to me, passing them through the fire, to devour them. Moreover they have done this to Me: They have defiled My sanctuary on the same day and profaned My Sabbaths.’” How did they become spiritual harlots? They defiled God’s sanctuary and profaned His Sabbaths. When you break God’s law and teach others to break God’s law, you are committing spiritual adultery against Him. A person or group who claims to be the church of God and teaches others that they cannot keep the law of God is in a spiritual, adulterous situation as Ezekiel says very plainly here in Ezekiel 23:36-38.

Is it possible for a church, in the most literal sense, to become a harlot and still think they are keeping God’s law? Turn in your Bible to Ephesians 5, where Paul is talking about the church. In verse 30 it says, “For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’” Now let me ask you, friends, when Paul says here, and he is quoting from Genesis 2:23, 24, that a man shall leave his father and mother and should be joined to his wife and they two shall be one flesh, what is he talking about? He is talking about the sexual relationship of marriage. Let us read that right in the Bible. Turn back to 1 Corinthians 6:15-17. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? [He is talking to the church.] Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For ‘the two,’ He says, ‘shall become one flesh.’” If you are an adult, you cannot misunderstand what Paul is talking about. When the Bible says the two shall become one flesh, what it is talking about? It is talking about the sexual relationship of marriage.

Just as a man is physically joined to his wife in marriage, in the same way the Christian is spiritually united to the Lord Jesus Christ, one body, one bone, and one flesh with Him. (See 1 Corinthians 6:16.) “We are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” Ephesians 5:30-32. Now, if you cannot understand it, you will be excused, because when the apostle Paul says something is a great mystery it is, but it remains that, he says, he is talking about the sexual relationship of marriage. Then he explains that he is really talking about Christ and the church. You are members of the body of Christ. He says, in 1 Corinthians 6:16, “The one who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.”

I have a question for you. Is marriage holy? Yes, the Bible teaches that marriage is holy, but it has some stipulations. Notice what it says in Ephesians 5:31. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” Now, this should not be difficult to understand. If you have two, it is holy; but if you have three it is wicked. Is that understandable?

The church is to be one spirit with Christ, but when she unites herself with the governments of this world, with the kings of this world, what do you have? You have the church, the Lord, and the governments of the world. It is no longer two, but three; and that is wicked. That church has become a harlot, and, therefore, a part of Babylon. It does not matter whether it is done through the executive, the judicial, or the legislative branch. If she unites herself with the governments of this world, she becomes a part of Babylon. For a hundred and fifty years, Historic Seventh-day Adventists have preached the separation of church and state and that the church could not be united with the state without becoming part of Babylon. What have we forgotten!

“The world must not be introduced into the church, and married to the church, forming a bond of unity. Through this means the church will become indeed corrupt, and as stated in Revelation, ‘a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.’” Testimonies to Ministers, 265. How does the church become converted to Babylon? When she becomes united to the world; when she goes and unites herself with the world, with the governments of this world.

It says in Revelation 14 that this Babylon has made all of the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. The Bible speaks here about intoxicating wine, and intoxicating wine makes you drunk so that you cannot think. You become all confused, and, for the time, you are insane—gone mad—because you have drunk all of this wine.

“They also have erred through wine, and through intoxicating drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink, they are swallowed up by the wine, they are out of the way through intoxicating drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. For all tables are full of vomit and filth; no place is clean.” Isaiah 28:7, 8. What happens when people drink wine? They are intoxicated and they err in vision and stumble in judgment.

In Revelation 14 it is not talking so much about physical wine as about spiritual wine. We find out what this spiritual wine is in Isaiah 29. “Pause and wonder! Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with intoxicating drink. For the Lord has poured out on you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, namely the prophets; and He has covered your heads, namely, the seers. The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, ‘Read this, please.’ And he says, ‘I cannot, for it is sealed.’ Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, ‘Read this, please.’ And he says, ‘I am not literate.’ Therefore the Lord said: ‘Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the commandments of men.” Isaiah 29:9-13. These people are drunk with spiritual, not physical wine. They are drunk because they are teaching for doctrines the commandments of men, and as a result, the people are deceived and confused!

It is time for Seventh-day Adventists to recognize that when they see that it is the commandments of men being taught that contradict the Word of God, it is the wine of Babylon. It does not matter what publishing house published it or what the name of the person is who wrote it; if it is the commandments of men and it contradicts the Word of God, it is the wine of Babylon. If you listen to it, you are going to become confused—drunk.

“And another angel followed, saying, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.’” Revelation 14:8. If you drink of this wine, you are also going to drink of the wrath of God.

Who is it that is going to receive the wrath of God?

Concerning God, He “will render to each one according to his deeds,” “there is no partiality with God,” “eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek.” Romans 2:6, 11, 7-10.

Notice that it is the people who obey unrighteousness who drink of the wrath of God. The third angel’s message teaches that if you receive the mark of the beast, you are going to receive the wrath of God. The only people who receive the wrath of God, according to Paul in Romans 2:8, are those who obey unrighteousness. So, there is something about the wine of Babylon and the mark of the beast that is unrighteous.

Well, what is unrighteousness? “All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.” 1 John 5:17. The sin that does not lead to death is the sin that is repented, forsaken, and confessed. That sin does not lead to death because the cross of Jesus Christ will save you from the consequences. The only people, according to Romans 2:8, who are going to receive the wrath of God are those who obey unrighteousness; but unrighteousness is sin. What is sin? Sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4). All right, is there something in the wine of Babylon that teaches people to break God’s law? Yes, there is.

Have you ever heard the idea that you really cannot overcome sin, that you really cannot keep God’s law perfectly, that you are going to go on sinning some and confessing? Oh, you will not sin great big, but you are going to go on sinning and confessing until Jesus comes.

“Success in any line demands a definite aim.” Education, 262. I want to ask you this question, Will a person overcome sin who is not aiming to do so? Obviously, the person who is led to believe that you cannot overcome your sins perfectly, that you are going to go sinning and confessing, sinning and confessing, is never going to overcome the sin in his own life. The name of the church where this is taught is not important; it comes from Babylon and it will lead you to the seven last plagues.

“He who sins is of the devil.” 1 John 3:8. Let me tell you, friend, if your pastor is teaching you that you can sin, you had better got our of that church and go to a church where they do not teach that sort of thing, because he who sins is of the devil.

“Will the churches heed the Laodicean message? Will they repent, or will they, notwithstanding that the message—is proclaimed to the world, go on in sin? This is the last message of mercy, the last warning to a fallen world. If the church of God becomes lukewarm, it does not stand in favor with God any more than do the churches that are represented as having fallen and become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and the cage of every unclean and hateful bird. Those who have had opportunities to hear and receive the truth and who have united with the Seventh-day Adventist church, calling themselves the commandment-keeping people of God, and yet possess no more vitality and consecration of the plagues of God just as verily as the churches who oppose the law of God. Only those that are sanctified through the truth will compose the royal family in the heavenly mansions Christ has gone to prepare for those that love Him and keep His commandments.” [All emphasis supplied] Manuscript Releases, vol. 19, 176

Some people say, “Oh, we are Zion. Don’t ever talk to us about Babylon. We are out of that organization.” Listen friends, you may be baptized and call yourself a Seventh-day Adventist but be just as bad off as the fallen churches that oppose the law of God and receive the plagues just the same.

“It is now the duty of God’s commandment-keeping people to watch and pray, to search the Scriptures diligently, to hide the Word of God in the heart, lest they sin against Him in idolatrous thoughts and debasing practices, and thus the church of God become demoralized like the fallen churches whom prophecy represents as being filled with every unclean and hateful bird.” Review and Herald, May 17, 1887

“We must as a people arouse and cleanse the camp of Israel. Licentiousness, unlawful intimacy, and unholy practices are coming in among us in a large degree; and ministers who are handling sacred things are guilty of sin in this respect. They are coveting their neighbors’ wives, and the seventh commandment is broken. We are in danger of becoming a sister to fallen Babylon, of allowing our churches to become corrupted, and filled with every foul spirit, a cage for every unclean and hateful bird; and will we be clear unless we make decided movements to cure the existing evil?” Manuscript Release, no. 449, 17. Just try to make movements to cure the existing evil and see what happens. Friend, it is time to read the Spirit of Prophecy and read all of the statements.

“When Jerusalem was divorced from God it was because of her sins. She fell from an exalted height that Tyre and Sidon had never reached. And when an angel falls he becomes a fiend. The depth of our ruin is measured by the exalted light to which God has raised us in His great goodness and unspeakable mercy. Oh, what privileges are granted to us a people! And if God spared not His people that he loved, because they refused to walk in the light, how can He spare the people whom He has blessed with the light of heaven in having opened to them the most exalted truth ever entrusted to mortal man to give to the world?” Manuscript Releases, vol. 12, 319

If we fall and become spiritually like Babylon, it is going to become worse for us because we had more light.

Book Review and Comments, The Church

“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3. There are foundational principles in every person’s mind that shape the way that he sees and understands all information. People’s foundational principles of thinking are largely absorbed from their immediate environment; therefore, what children and young people see and experience generally has more to do with their perception of reality than anything else. As a baby grows up, he or she assimilates what is accepted as fundamental truth and basic values of life from his or her environment. If the parents teach the child the Bible from its earliest years, as an adult, that person will have foundational principles of thought that are based on the law of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ. If two people espouse different foundational principles of thinking, they might be talking together about the same subject, but their perspective of that subject is so different that little actual meeting of the minds may occur. One of the foundational principles in the minds of Christians is what they believe the true church to be. For example, if a person is taught from the cradle that there is only one church that goes back to the time of Jesus Christ and that this is the true Church of God, he will generally believe this, although the Bible not only does not give any such assurance but actually teaches just the opposite. For this reason it is important for anyone who is really serious about inheriting eternal life to go right to the Bible itself and find out what the conditions are and then abide by those conditions.

Men who have been used of God in the past to proclaim His message were men who went straight to the Bible to find out the truth and then chose to abide by that truth, even if they were all alone in the world in doing so. If you want to be used by God as a humble instrument in the finishing of His work in the world, you must do the same thing. We must come to the Bible with a humble spirit, promising the Lord that whatever He teaches us by His Holy Spirit, we will believe and obey.

Today, God is preparing to finish His work. Unfortunately, for many Seventh-day Adventists, because of their false understanding of who and what the church is, this work is being incorrectly perceived. They have made up their minds that God has to work within certain regular lines. When we have checked the inspired writings, we find that there is not only basis for this belief but that the inspired writings make it very clear that the work will be finished in a way that we do not expect.

Their definition of who and what the church is, is the foundational principle that is in error in the mind of many Seventh-day Adventists. A controversy has erupted in Adventism as is clearly demonstrated in the publishing of the Issues book (which contained a section about who and what the church is). The controversy over this issue has brought division throughout self-supporting workers, or independent ministries, as well as from within what is called the church structure of Seventh-day Adventists. Just today we received a letter from Wildwood (OCI) saying that they were uncomfortable with our ministry. What they are uncomfortable about is our understanding of who and what the true church is. If necessary, I could name names of individuals from various self-supporting or independent ministries who have gone all over the world trying to destroy the influence of people who have taken the same position that we have on who and what the true church is. The efforts made to destroy the influence of others is strong evidence that even the ones doing these things know that which position you take will completely alter your course of action and even your understanding of right and wrong.

One of the main accusations that has received wide circulation is that certain ministries, such as Steps to Life and others, have changed the definition of the church form that held historically by Seventh-day Adventists. Our research into this subject has shown clearly that not all Adventist pioneers understood the nature of the church, but there have been some who, from their study of the Bible, clearly understood the issue of who and what the true church is. We have published a few statements from these in previous issues of our News Notes.

Apparently J.L. Tucker, one of the pioneers in Seventh-day Adventist radio, was one of these individuals. It is evident from what he wrote about this subject that he had been studying his Bible and accepted what the Bible said about the church. We review briefly his booklet The Church, God’s Last Message To It.

The first paragraph is stunning in its clarity of thought. If this were to have been stated in 1994, it would have immediately placed the speaker in the middle of the controversy over who and what is the church. “The church is dear to the heart of God. Christ loves the church. Ephesians 5:25. More than one hundred times it is mentioned in the New Testament alone. God has had His people (church) in all ages. See Acts 7:38. Not everyone whose name is on some church roll is counted by God to be His own. He keeps His own records in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5. There is, so to speak, a church within a church. Only truly born again, dedicated souls make up the real church.” The Church, 3

Notice three points made in this first paragraph: (1) Not everyone making a profession is part of the real church. (2) The church (singular) has existed in all ages. (3) Although there is only one true church, there is a larger group of people who make a profession; but these are not the real church. As we ponder these three points, the following ideas come to mind. First, we cannot say that there have been two or three or more true churches down through history. Second, the deciding factor as to who is a member of the church has to do with spiritual qualifications. The church, then, is a spiritual entity and therefore must have a spiritual definition. Your understanding of the Ellen White quotations which are used to confuse people will depend on your definition of the church. That is why in our booklet on the church we listed in the appendices the inspired definitions that Ellen White gave of the true church and the professed church.

In the fourth paragraph, Elder Tucker reiterates this truth about the spiritual nature of the true church. He writes: “The church is a spiritual communion, consisting of all those who are connected with the great Head of the church. It is His kingdom in the earth.”

Elder Tucker then begins a brief review of the Great commission and how it was and was not carried out down through history. Notice the four identifying marks of the church to whom this commission was given. He writes: “To His church, divinely constituted, divinely organized, divinely equipped, divinely connected, the divine commission is given. Matthew 28:19, 20.”

He discusses the last or remnant church that god will have in the last days and shows its identifying marks in Revelation 12:17 and 14:12. He gives a beautiful description of this people or church: “Only those who give God first place, His rightful place, in their minds, hearts and lives, will develop those characteristics brought to our attention in verse twelve: ‘Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.’ Out of an impatient, hair-trigger age, God will develop in the hearts of those who have purposed to be His people, regardless, that wondrous grace of patience. In a disobedient age when the laws of men and the laws of God are violated at will, in an age when many religionists teach a brand of grace that throws aside the ten commandments of God, in an age when crime, violence and disobedience are everywhere, God will produce a people, by His infinite grace, of whom he can say, ‘They keep the commandments of God.’ In and age when on every side we hear the theory ‘do as you please,’ it makes no difference what you believe, just so you are sincere,’ ‘why be particular?,’ God will produce a people of whom He can say: ‘They have the faith of Jesus.’ They live like Jesus; they talk like Jesus; they walk like Jesus. Their one great cry is ‘What did Jesus do? What did he teach? What does He want me to do?’ They have the mind of Christ. See Philippians 2:5. Like Christ, they would rather die than sin. Like Him, they will be obedient, even unto death. See Ephesians 2:8 Like their Lord, truth means everything, for did he not say, ‘ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free’? John 8:32. They do not trust their own judgment but seek only a ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ for they know ‘there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.’ Proverbs 14:12.” Ibid., 10, 11

Elder Tucker describes this people, this church, as a group who are preparing day by day to soon become part of the church triumphant: “Paul tells us we must be a ‘glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.’ Ephesians 5:25-27. See also James 1:27. The born-again Christian counts his body as the temple of the living God, which he will never knowingly defile: ‘What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.’ 1Corinthians 6:19, 20. ‘Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.’ 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17

“In the light of this standard there will be no liquor drinking, no tobacco habits, no slaves of passion. The true church member takes for his standard, ‘What would Jesus do?,’ and he cannot conceive of his Lord deliberately taking poison into His body temple.

“The remnant church will not only be clean in body, mind, and soul, but it well teach what Jesus taught. It will ‘earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.’ Jude 3. It will demand a ‘thus saith the Lord’ for every religious practice and custom. It will hold to sound doctrine, remembering that Christ said, ‘In vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.’ Matthew 15:9. The members of God’s true church will love one another. John 13:34, 35.’ Ibid., 13, 14

Elder Tucker then writes about Christ’s last warning to His church: “Here we are, in an hour when all inventions for a quick work are here, radio, television, every means for mass communication are available to the church. God says for us to ‘wake up’ and use these. ‘Sound the last message.’ Tell the people they are breaking God’s commandments. Tell them to put on the whole armour of God and make a new dedication to the Lord Jesus. How quickly an awakened church can finish her work.” Ibid., 18. What would our pioneers think about the first time that Seventh-day Adventists have been given the opportunity to preach the three angels’ messages from the most powerful short wave station in North America, and many are so asleep they do not even recognize what is going on? One of the main reasons that they do not recognize what is going on is that they are confused about who the church is—they believe that the voice of God must be heard through a certain regular channel. The result will be that the work will be all finished, and then many Adventists will wake up; but it will be too late. Over and over the Spirit of Prophecy has warned us of this possibility.

Elder Tucker recognized, as stated in the first paragraph of his booklet, that not everybody in the professed church was really part of the true church and that God could use others who were of part of the “professed church” structure to finish His work. It is significant that in ministries who are working together to reach the world with the three angels’ messages over short wave radio, one or more leaders has been disfellowshipped or forcibly separated from the ministry where he was trying to spread the three angels’ messages, and it has been spread all over the world that these people are not really Seventh-day Adventists. Keep watching. It is going to become more evident every passing month who the real and true Seventh-day Adventists are. What Elder Tucker stated in the closing paragraph of his booklet about the professed church is today becoming a reality: “God wants to work through His church. That has been His studied plan, but he is not dependent upon the church. The hour has come when the Gospel must be sounded to every nation, kindred, tongue and people. The earth is to be lightened with the glory of God. Revelation 18:1. If His church will not arise and shine, then God will use other means. This is the hour for greatness! Dear reader, God wants to use you; but He can only use you as you are wakened, dedicated, clothed with His righteousness. He says His people are ‘for signs and wonders.’ Isaiah 8:18 They are to do exploits (Daniel 11:32). It is HIGH time to wake up, to get up and to speak up for God. It’s time to cut loose of the world and all worldliness; time to cut loose from all extra possessions and translate them into souls. The Lord is coming! Be ready! Help others to be ready! ‘So shall ye be my disciples.’ John 15:8.” Ibid., 19, 20

The Church: God’s Last Message to It

The church is dear to the heart of God. Christ loves the church. Ephesians 5:25. More than one hundred times it is mentioned in the New Testament alone. God has had His people (church) in all ages. See Acts 7:38. Not everyone whose name is on some church roll is counted by God to be His own. He keeps his own records in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5. There is, so to speak, a church within a church. Only born-again, dedicated souls make up the real church.

Jesus spoke of the church as “My Father’s House.” John 2:16. When the Jewish nation, the once chosen people, signally failed to achieve the spiritual standards and accomplish the work of being a light to the world, they, as a notion, were rejected, though God bore long with them. See Isaiah 5:1-7; Matthew 21:33-45; Matthew 23:38.

Some little time before the rejection of the Jewish nation as His peculiar treasure, Jesus laid the foundation of the Christian church, which was to take over the vineyard and become God’s custodian of divine truths for the world. See Matthew 16:13-18; Matthew 21:41. Christ is the Rock of Ages and the eternal foundation for all that pertains to the Gospel plan. Upon that mighty truth, given utterance to by the apostle Peter, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God,” Jesus said, “Upon this rock I will build My church.”

The church is of too great importance to have as its foundation any human being. No such responsibility or place of importance was assigned to any man. See Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 5:23-30; Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 2:19-22; I Peter 2:4, 5 Christ is a sure foundation. Upon this living stone both Jew and Gentile alike, as individuals may now build. It is broad enough for all and strong enough to sustain the weight and burden of the whole world. The church is a spiritual communion, consisting of all those who are connected with the great Head of the church. It is His kingdom in the earth.

The Great Commission

To His church, divinely constitute, divinely organized, divinely equipped, divinely connected, the divine commission is given. Matthew 28:19, 20.

The church is to proclaim Christ’s gospel of salvation to all nations and to everyone. Every new addition to the church of family of God is to be given a responsibility to bear. Every one is to let his light so shine for Christ that he will attract other men to Christ, the Head of the church. See Mark 13:34; Ephesians 2:10; I Corinthians 3:9.

The early church in the days of the apostles took the command of their Lord seriously. They were told to tarry in Jerusalem until they received the outpouring of power, the promised Spirit. Acts 1:8. Under the leadership of the third person of the Godhead, they went forth a conquering force. Millions embraced Christianity from Judaism and from paganism, during the remaining lifetime of these disciples. Satan’s camp trembled at the mighty onslaught of Christianity. He and his cohorts laid plans to stop the triumphs of the gospel truths. The church was warned and counseled against the plans of the enemy. Paul wrote to his fellow workers: “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.” Acts 20:28-31.

Gradually the spiritual leaders succumbed to the sophistries of the Devil, and they began to welcome into the church false doctrines and perverse things—anything to get a following and become somebody in the eyes of others. Once the bars were down, error swept into the once pure church, as an overwhelming flood. With the coming of error and false doctrine, the spirit of evangelism waned and died.

For centuries there was bickering and strife among the churches and between the leaders of the church. Gradually, but surely, the bishops of Rome assumed and obtained control and became the head of the so called Christian church, though it had but very little resemblance to the church Jesus organized. With a man assuming the role of vicegerent of Christ, or taking the place that God gave to the Holy Spirit, love waned; doctrines of men took the place of the doctrines of the Word; anyone daring to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience, was declared a heretic, and multiplied millions through the centuries were put to death for their faith.

The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation had predicted just such an experience. They also gave the length of time that the apostasy would hold sway. When that hour dawned, a revival began to break out in Europe. It was spoken of as the Reformation. Men dared to come back to the Word and to seek God’s will from the original source, the Blood of God. See Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19, 20. The divine commission given to the church, though, long, long delayed in being carried out, has not changed.

One Gospel

Though there is but one gospel, one plan of redemption, one name that can save, (see Acts 4:12), yet at times in God’s dealings with man there has been special emphasis upon special truths. The disciples emphasized the resurrection of our Lord. The reformers’ particular message was “The Bible and the Bible only” and “The just shall live by faith.” The message today that must belt the globe is present truth for this hour. It must include all points of the Gospel, with special emphasis upon “The hour of His judgment is come.” “Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Revelation 14:6, 7

Then in rapid succession follows two more messages which blend with the first. See Verses 8-11. We read in verse fourteen: “And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle,” The harvest of the earth is reaped.

God’s final message which prepares His people for the Second Coming of the Lord is here in Revelation 14. It needs to be studied earnestly, prayerfully. It is a message that gives the Creator His rightful place, in an hour when human rationalism, atheistic evolution, and modernism are doing their baneful work of ruling God out of His own universe. His last message sounds: “Fear God, and give glory to Him.” And then there is this emphasis: “For the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”

Only those who give God first place, His rightful place, in their minds, hearts and lives, will develop those characteristics brought to our attention in verse twelve: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Out of an impatient, hair-trigger age, God will develop in the hearts of those who have purposed to be His people, regardless, that wondrous grace of patience. In a disobedient age when the laws of men and the laws of God are violated at will, in an age when many religionists teach a brand of grace that throws aside the Ten Commandments of God, in an age when crime, violence and disobedience are everywhere, God will produce a people, by His infinite grace, of whom He can say, “they keep the commandments of God.” In an age when on every side we hear the theory “do as you please,” “it makes no difference what you believe, just so you are sincere,” “why be particular?,” God will produce a people of whom He can say: “They have the faith of Jesus.” They live like Jesus; they talk like Jesus; they walk like Jesus. Their one great cry is “What did Jesus do? What did He teach? What does he want me to do?” They have the mind of Christ. See Philippians 2:5. Like Christ, they would rather die than sins. Like Him, they will be obedient, even unto death. See Ephesians 2:8. Like their Lord, truth means everything, for did He not say, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”? John 8:32. They do not trust their own judgment but seek only a “thus saith the Lord,” for they know “there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12. “In vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Matthew 15:9

As God called and chose Abraham and separated him for a special task, as He chose the Jewish nation and made them the heralds of a newly organized Christian church, as He raised up and used mighty men of the Reformation days and through succeeding years, so he has a church today. He speaks of it as His “remnant church.” Revelation 12:17. Her characteristics are plainly described, that all may recognize her. Revelation 14:12, 12:17. Her work is worldwide. The commission is plain and distinct. She must emphasize the whole gospel, with special emphasis on the climax of it all and the events in connection with our Lord’s return. The solemn truth that the hour of God’s judgment IS come is to awaken saint and sinner. The call is sounded to come out of Babylon, out of error into truth. The warning against the beast power and his image and mark is to be carried to every corner of the world. The fruitage of such a message is to prepare man for the meeting with king Jesus. They are described by inspiration: “Here is the patience of the saints; here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12.

It is a high standard God has for His church, as well as a tremendous task, but Christ’s grace is sufficient for everyone. “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” Romans 5:20. We will never rise higher than we aim. Paul tells we must be “a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:25-27. See also James 1:27. The born again Christian count his body as the temple of the living God, which he will never knowingly defile; “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17

In the light of this standard there will be no liquor drinking, no tobacco habits, no slaves of passion. The true church member takes for his standard, “What would Jesus do?,” and he cannot conceive of his Lord deliberately taking poison into his body temple.

The remnant church will not only be clean in body, mind, and soul, but it will teach what Jesus taught. It will “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints,” Jude 3. It will demand a “thus saith the Lord” for every religious practice and custom. It will hold to sound doctrine, remembering that Christ said, “in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Matthew 15:9. The members of God’s true church will love one another. See John 13:34, 35.

The greatest function of the church is to win souls. Every member of the church is an ambassador for Christ. He is to entreat men and women to be reconciled to God. By precept and example he will sound the invitation; “Whosoever will may come.” Revelation 22:17. Those persons who shut themselves away from bearing burdens for others, will soon suffer spiritual feebleness. It is labor that keeps the strong man strong and spiritual labor, toil and burden-bearing is what will give strength to the members of the church of Christ.

Christ’s Last Warning to His Church

Though Christ loved His church and gave Himself for it, yet down through the years He has counseled and warned His church. So today He has a striking warning and makes a special appeal to His remnant church. Here it is: “And that, knowing the time, that, now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.” Romans 13:11-14. Here Christ accuses his church, who professes to know the times and understand the meaning of world conditions, of being asleep in the hour of crisis. They have had knowledge, but they’ve been lulled to sleep. God’s long-suffering with a judgment-bound world has caused many to say, “My Lord delayeth His coming.” They have grown weary in well doing—God speaks of these as being asleep. They need to wake up. He says it’s “high time to awaken out of sleep.”

As a boy, I learned the meaning of the words “high time.” I was raised on the farm and certain seasons of the year meant getting up very early. Father would call “Julius, it’s time to get up.” Partially awake I’d respond; “Yes, just a minute,’ and I’d go back to sleep in that moment. Pretty soon I’d hear father’s voice again, with more emphasis: “Julius, it’s time to get up.” “Yes, just a minute; I just want to stretch.” And when a boy stretches in a nice warm, cozy bed, he can go back to sleep to dream he is out currying the horses, feeding the stock, milking the cows, only waiting for mothers call to breakfast. And all at once my dreams would be rudely shattered with the voice of father, “Julius, it’s HIGH time you were getting out of there.” And out I’d come, for I had learned through sad experience that when father called “It’s HIGH time,” that was his last call that morning for, you see, my father believed in the laying on of hands, and he didn’t care much where he laid them as long as they landed on me, if there had been disobedience.

Reverently I say that our heavenly Father has been calling, calling to His church down through the centuries; and now His last call “It is HIGH time to awake, and put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provisions for the flesh—no excuse for living on a low level. This is the hour when every member of the church is to know what victory is, not planning to get ready sometime, but to be ready, for does not our Lord say, “Be ye also ready: for in such and hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh”? Matthew 24:44.

What the ship captain said to one of God’s men of old who was running away from duty and had gone to sleep in a time of great local crisis, so God says to his church today: “What meantest thou, oh sleeper? Arise, and call upon thy God.” Jonah 1:6. What a tragedy! The one man on that boat who knew God, was asleep. In the hour of the world, and God has to call to His church or to large segments of it, “What meanest thou, oh sleeper? You know the time. Wake up! It’s HIGH time to proclaim to every corner of the world My final message!”

Here we are, in an hour when all inventions for a quick work are here, radio, television, every means for mass communication are available to the church. God says for us to “wake up” and use these. “Sound the last message.” Tell the people they are breaking God’s commandments. Tell them to put on the whole armour of God and make a new dedication to the Lord Jesus. How quickly an awakened church can finish her work. God has promised the outpouring of the holy Spirit in the latter rain proportions to His remnant church. He sent the early rain of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and great were the results. Thousands were converted in a day. The latter rain will be infinitely greater in abundance and greater the harvest. God is going to finish His work. Romans 9:28. God wants to work through His church. That has been His studied plan, but He is not dependent upon the church. The hour has come when the gospel must be sounded to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. The earth is to be lightened with the glory of God. Revelation 18:1. If His church will not arise and shine, then God will use other means. This is the hour for greatness! Dear reader, God wants to use you; but He can only use you as you are wakened, dedicated, clothed with his righteousness. He says his people are “for signs and wonders.” Isaiah 8:18 They are to do exploits (Daniel 11:32). It is HIGH time to wake up, to get up and to speak up for God. It’s time to cut loose from all extra possessions and translate them into souls. The Lord is coming! Be ready! Help others to be ready! “so shall ye be my disciples.” John 15:8.

The New Testament Church

“He [Jesus], who was the foundation of the ritual and economy of Israel would be looked upon as its enemy and destroyer.” Desire of Ages, 111. The reason for this was that those who were in charge of the system viewed themselves as being the church and they realized that if Jesus were to be accepted, many of them would lose their positions.

Today there is similar problem in the professed church of God there are some inspired counsels we are willing to deal with but others that we are not. If many of the counsels of Ellen White were really advocated, they would be considered to be dangerous to the church, possibly even capable of destroying it. I do not believe, however, we will ever receive God’s blessing until we feed upon every word.

Principles of church organization affect every aspect of the church, from the youngest member on up to the General Conference. In the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, there is a great deal of information dealing with church organization that is written not only to those in leadership positions but to laymen as well.

Throughout history, whenever doctrine becomes corrupted, organization also becomes corrupt. In fact, in Revelation, God is as concerned about false organization as He is about false doctrine. In the writings of Ellen White there is a great deal written about doctrine, but I also find hundreds of pages written about church organization which we are afraid to touch because if we even read the quotation, we will be accused of criticism. It is time, however, that we have the courage of John the Baptist and, with the spirit of love, humbly look at the things God has given to us, praying that He will help us to implement these things so He can pour out His spirit and finish the work he is seeking to do.

First Corinthians 1:2 tells us how the New Testament church is organized. “To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints.’ The church at Corinth, identified by Paul, is not addressed as the church which is registered. It could be registered, but that is not the point. Nothing is said regarding their organization or where they meet. They may meet in some building and they are organized, but that is not the point. The church here in Corinth is those people in Corinth who are sanctified and called to be the saints of God. Now the church was to be organized, but the organization was not the church. The people were the church. These people could work in harmony, because this is possible when God is in your heart. So they would meet and work together, send out missionaries and take up offerings, and do all those things which are necessary for God’s work to progress. But the church itself was the people. This is what the church has always been.

In a special sense, the church is those people who are registered in the books of heaven. “But you have come to the Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the Firstborn who are registered in heaven” Hebrews 12:22,23. The church, the true church of God, is composed of those people who are registered in the Book of Life in heaven.

Now this presents a very interesting situation. Who decides who is going to be a church member? Is it the pope who has the keys? If it is not the pope, is it the church board? Can they decide? What about the church body? Can we decide who is saved and who is not, whose name is written in heaven and whose is not?

“Well, don’t we have anything to do?” Oh, yes, we have something to do. We are called to recognize those whom God has registered in the books in heaven; and those whom he has registered there, we are to register here. He does not, however, follow our suit; we are to follow His, and there is a difference.

Let us suppose that God takes someone’s name off of the books in heaven and they are disfellowshipped. Are they still church members? No. But suppose their names remain in the books on earth. This is an interesting dilemma. The church is purified when the books on earth match the books in heaven. You see, God has given mankind no authority to decide who can be a member and who cannot be a member, but simply to recognize those whom he has accepted or rejected.

God has local congregations here on earth and we have organizations here to help organize the work, but the headquarters of your local church is in heaven, where only the sanctified are registered, not in some office in your state or some office in Washington, D.C. Some people find this rather disconcerting, believing such a policy could lead to all kinds of trouble.

Just suppose that a coup took place in some local church or conference through politicking and some people who were not inspired by the Lord or filled with the Holy Spirit took over through manipulation and because of their prejudices certain people were unjustly disfellowshipped. Would those who were disfellowshipped cease to be church members? Certainly not. Suppose, on the other hand, that people were allowed to come into the church who were never converted. Because their names were in the books on earth, would they, therefore, be church members? Not in any way, shape or form. God has never left His church to be manipulated and tampered with by the political whims of mankind. There is coming a time when He is going to turn and overturn the professed church that is called by His name. God’s true church remains the same as it has always been—those people who are registered in the books of heaven.

“God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep His commandments. ‘Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them’ (Matthew 18:20). Where Christ is, even among the humble few, this is Christ’s church.” Upward Look, 315

When Paul was ordained, he was ordained to baptize and establish churches—the two together. According to inspiration, the same ordination that gives people the right to baptize gives them the right to establish churches. More and more, however, there are increasing restrictions controlling the starting of new churches.

I have been doing some studying on the history of Kansas. In 1903, Kansas had one hundred churches. The state has grown by almost a million people in the last fifty years, and during that period of time, we have gone from one hundred churches down to fifty-four.

Not only has God alone reserved the right to start and to recognize a church, but if you and I decide to go out and start a church apart from His will, no matter what conference committee may approve it, it will never be a church. “For the presence of the High and Holy One who inhabiteth eternity can alone constitute a church.” Ibid. [All emphasis supplied] If God’s presence is not the center of His church, it is not recognized by Him as His church whether or not it is recognized by a conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In New Testament times, the church was those who were called and sanctified. Wherever Paul went and converted a few people, he organized them into a church, right there and then, without seeking any other permission. It was not up to the church in Jerusalem to give permission or to decide if they were a church, but to recognize the fact that they were. Now, of course, if a church apostatized or if a local member apostatized, it was also up to the church in Jerusalem to decide that, as these people are no longer keeping the commandments of God, they are no longer recognized by us as being one of God’s churches.

For us individually to receive the Holy Spirit, we must study the Bible, pray, overcome sin and witness. For the church body to receive the Holy spirit, they must, as a body, also have these four things present. Not only is it necessary for us as individuals to be winning others to Christ, but God’s design for his church is that every church should start new churches.

One of the things that must take place before God can pour out His blessing upon the church is not only revival of primitive doctrine, but a revival of primitive organization. The New Testament churches had the freedom to go out and start new churches; but they were not just started and left to flounder by themselves, they were left with local organization. “And when they had preached the gospel to the city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, ‘We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God’ So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.” Acts 14:21-23

Authority in the early church was to be earned because of a godly life, and knowledge of the Scriptures and the ability that God had given to one; but never was it to come just by virtue of office. Today our church is almost being destroyed in some parts of this world, because some have assumed the office of minister and decided that because they have that office they are the king of the local church. God never intended that office to be that of a king, but one of service.

From Miletus, he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.” Acts 20:17. What elders were these that He called? These were the elders who had been appointed. Notice, it is elders plural, not the elder. “Therefore take heed to yourselves [this is the instruction he is giving to these elders] and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.” Acts 20:28-31

So he called the elders to guard the church from wolves. In a correlating passage to this in Testimonies, vol. 5, 77, Ellen White, writing of her own experience, says that she could scarcely keep from weeping when she saw the people who were taking charge of the church who were trained by Satan. Paul had the same concern, and the elders were called to protect the church from these wolves.

Now the question is, suppose that a wolf came from Jerusalem. Were the elders to protect the church from that wolf? “Oh, no,” Someone says, “not a local elder.” Turn with me to one of the most interesting passages in the New Testament in regard to this. “Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.” Galatians 2:11-13. Paul stood up and rebuked Peter, but Paul was not happy about this because he was not the one who should have had to do the rebuking.

God had established a local leadership to protect the church. “Not from Peter ,” someone might say, “he was from Jerusalem. He was one of the pillars; he knew Jesus personally. No, not from Peter. They were only Gentiles who had been newly converted to the faith. You do not expect them, these Gentile Galatians who had just come into the Christian church a few years ago, to stand up and rebuke Peter, who was from the Jerusalem church, who had been a Jew all his life, one of the pillars in the church, a follower of Jesus—not Peter! I mean, Paul was an apostle. He could do that.” But Paul was most unhappy that he had to do that. “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?” Galatians 3:1

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” Galatians 5:1. Someone might say, “That scripture is dealing with circumcision and all those things.” Circumcision was involved, and eating with Gentiles was involved, but that was not the issue! The issue in Galatians was that Peter had caused them to transgress and they were to stand in their freedom, even if it was Peter from Jerusalem who should come down and preach false theology.

“But strange fire has been offered in the use of harsh words, in self-importance, in self-exaltation, in self-righteousness, in arbitrary authority, in domineering, in oppression, in restricting the liberty of God’s people, binding them about by your plans and rules, which God has not framed, neither have they come into his mind. All these things are strange fire, unacknowledged by God, and are a continual misrepresentation of His character.” Testimonies to Ministers, 358

The Lord established the church upon the Rock, Jesus Christ, and he is to be the head of the church. See Ephesians 1:22,23. The issue in the days of Martin Luther was who was in charge of the church, the Lord or the pope. That was the issue in Wesley’s day and it was the issue in 1888. I have been amazed at how little Ellen White deals with doctrine in relationship to 1888. The problem with Jones and Waggoner was the they did not go through the “proper channels.” They were not approved by the “proper people.”

The following statements are from a letter that Ellen White wrote to Elder Butler. “God designs that men shall use their minds and consciences for themselves. He never designed that one man should become the shadow of another, and utter only another’s sentiments. But this error has been coming in among us, that a very few are to be mind, conscience, and judgment for all God’s workers. The foundation of Christianity is ‘Christ our Righteousness.’” 1888 Materials, 112. Do you want to know what Christ our Righteousness means? She tells us what it means. “Men are individually responsible to God and must act as God acts upon them, not as another human mind acts upon their mind.” Ibid. God is to decide what is right, not some human committee. God makes the rules, not some human rule book. The Bible is our creed. We always used to say: “We do not have a creed book; the Bible is our creed.”

“For if this method of indirect influence is kept up, souls can not be impressed and directed by the great I AM. They will, on the other hand, have their experience blended with another, and will be kept under a moral restraint, which allows no freedom of action or of choice….If we would be wise, and use diligently, prayerfully, and thankfully the means whereby light and blessings are to come to His people, then no voice nor power upon earth would have authority over us to say, ‘This shall not be.’” Ibid., 112,113

In the book Testimonies to Ministers, Ellen White wrote a great deal of material to the leadership and ministry in general after 1888. Much of this book is dealing with this very principle of church authority. Among other similar statements, she said, “The high-handed power that has been developed, as though position has made men god’s, makes me afraid, and ought to cause fear. It is a curse wherever and by whomever it is exercised.” Testimonies to Ministers, 361. “The spirit of domination is extending to the presidents of the conferences. If a man is sanguine of his own powers and seeks to exercise dominion over his brethren, feeling that he is invested with authority to make his will the ruling power, the best and only safe course is to remove him.” Ibid., 363

In the chapter “Under Which Banner?” she says, “Humanity is hailed as God.” Ibid.,365. She is talking to us dear friends. She says, “God will not vindicate any device whereby man shall in the slightest degree rule or oppress his fellowmen.” Ibid., 366. A curse is pronounced upon all who do this. See Jeremiah 17:5

“State conferences may depend upon the General Conference for light and knowledge and wisdom; but is it safe for them to do this? Battle Creek is not to be the center of God’s work. God alone can fill this place. When our people in the different places have their special convocations, teach them, for Christ’s sake and for their own soul’s sake, not to make flesh their arm. There is no power in men to read the hearts of their fellow men. The Lord is the only One upon whom we can with safety depend, and He is accessible in every place and to every church in the Union. To place men where God should be placed does not honor or glorify God. Is the president of the General Conference to be the god of the people?” Ibid., 375. Following the counsel and teaching of these ideas does not make a person very popular, but we are told to do it.

Instead of teaching the truth God has commissioned to be taught, do you know what she says we have taught? “For many years an education has been given to the people which places God second, and man first. The people have been taught that everything must be brought before the council of a few men in Battle Creek.” Testimonies to Ministers, 325. I want you to notice that this is a serious matter because it is breaking the first commandment. God says, “you shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3. “Let me entreat our state conferences and our churches to cease putting their dependence upon men and making flesh their arm.” Ibid., 380. Today we have gone far beyond where they were in 1888.

“In reference to our conference, it is repeated o’er and o’er and o’er again, that it is the voice of God, and therefore everything must be referred to the Conference and have the conference voice in regard to permission or restriction or what shall be and what shall not be done in the various fields….We have heard enough, abundance, about that ’everything must go around in the regular way.’…He [God] wants every living soul that has a knowledge of the truth to come to their senses.” Spalding-Magan Collection, 163. “The Lord wants His Spirit to come in, he wants the Holy Ghost king.” Ibid., 166. Today we have come to the point, in many places, that if you ever invite someone to come and speak in the pulpit, you have to get the permission of the local conference.

God is looking for every one of us, from the General Conference president down, to be broken on the Rock. When Jesus is the King, unity, peace and love pervade. This does not do away with organization. It is the only thing that creates a working organization. We still have offices, but when God’s plan is followed, no one is striving for office because everyone is striving to serve one another. See Matthew 20;25-28.

The message of Christ our Righteousness has to become practical. We need to exercise less and less control over one another and do more and more praying for one another. Let us not decide that God has given any one of us authority to tell everyone else how they are to serve God. God is calling for much more freedom in His church than what we have been willing to allow. There is a place for order, a place for leadership, but dear friend, God is calling for us to be broken on the Rock, to be filled with the humility and the love of Jesus. Then we will find that once again the Holy Spirit will be King.
